February is show month on the South Coast, with all the excitement and fun of traditional country shows on offer throughout the region. One show not to be missed is the Kangaroo Valley Show on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 February. See pages 23 and 24 for more about the events, stalls and performances on offer this year.

The flights are conducted 7 days a week from the Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park Rail and start with a preflight briefing and aircraft inspection before being strapped in for the adventure.

KiamaThe coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’.

At present, there is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities.

Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends.

The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can

also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.

Jamberoo Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside.

Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one.

Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top

attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!

This is a fantastic opportunity to get amongst the grape juices and have some serious family fun for just $10 per person.

Stomping takes place between 12pm and 2pm and all proceeds will go to Westmead Children’s Hospital.

The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”.From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills.Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities.In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust.An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago.Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks criss-cross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

The regional centre of Nowra, situated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, is a bustling town which contrasts the pleasant laid back lifestyle enjoyed by locals. The broad Shoalhaven River offers a number of recreational possibilities such as fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra is also a base for local adventure tour operators and options include canoe trips and skydiving.

Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre.

One of the cultural delights of Nowra is nearby Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd which he gave to the nation to be used as a retreat for artists. Along with the district's many wonderful natural attractions, Nowra

itself provides an extensive selection of entertainment for all ages. Live entertainment is found at local clubs, hotels, halls and schools. Cinemas offer the latest releases and touring circuses pitch their colourful big tops throughout the year.

The Fleet Air Arm Museum celebrates links with the aviation industry with a display of military and civil aircraft- it is well worth a visit. You can also explore Meroogal a historic timber gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in NSW.

Terara Original historic town with buildings dating back to 1850’s. The area is a prime agricultural region with great fresh local fruit and vegetable shops to buy local produce from. Use Millbank Road to cut through to Pyree and closer to the beach.

What to See & Do■ Visit Gradys Riverside Retreat in Burrier - you can hire a canoe and explore the Shoalhaven River.

■ Picnic at one of the pretty parks located on the outskirts of Nowra and at Bomaderry (just north of Nowra).

■ Take a stroll through one of the walking trails in Morton National Park.

■ Stop for lunch at the ‘Boatshed by the Bridge’- they serve quality local food and wine.

The South Coast’s largest second hand dealers, owners Janet and Craig have operated their current Nowra store for nine years, but have been in the antique and second hand goods business their whole lives.

You could say it’s in the blood. Craig’s father and Janet’s grandmother were both in the business.

Craig and Janet share their experience via good old fashioned customer

service and sound advice.

Their vast and constantly changing range includes furniture, crockery, vintage items, antiques and gifts.

“We focus on quality, quirky and unique items.

“If we don’t have it, we can try to source things as far as possible. We do our best, but sometimes it takes time,” Craig says.

“The most unique item we’ve sold was a life-sized, solid, hand carved timber rocking horse weighing two tonnes.

“We sold it to a Sydney buyer who placed it in his lounge room,” Janet recalls.

“We had to get a large forklift in to deliver it!”

Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach.

The bay’s beaches are impressive - a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state.

At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a

pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests.

Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water.

The story behind Lady DenmanLady Denman and sister ship Lady Scott were built at Huskisson by Joseph Dent for the Balmain New Ferry Company.

Launched on 5 December 1911 Lady Denman sailed Sydney Harbour for 67 years, carried hundreds of thousands of passengers and celebrated her centenary in December 2011.

The ferries were initially meant for a 15 year working life but continued to operate for decades, even after the Sydney Harbour Bridge opened.

The Huskisson-built ferry collided with the Royal Navy submarine, HMS

Anchorite in 1960, ran aground off Neilson’s Point in 1965 and left her wharf without her Master embarked in 1976.

Lady Denman was decommissioned in 1979 and returned to Jervis Bay in 1981.

She is now on display at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex (see ad on page 35).

WOW Watersports Fantastic Family Fun Says MayorShoalhaven Mayor Councillor Paul Green and his family recently enjoyed the Shoalhaven lifestyle while experiencing firsthand the excitement, adrenaline and family fun of a day out with Walking On Water (WOW) Watersports.

Councillor Green’s wife, six children and a family friend celebrating her 18th birthday all took to the waters of Fisherman’s Paradise recently with WOW owner Simon Twitchen.

“Simon was completely professional from the time we arrived and were fitted with lifejackets to the time we said goodbye,” Councillor Green said.

As usual, Simon provided a full safety briefing before starting the day's activities.

The day’s fun included introductory wakeboarding, rides on an inflatable called ‘the biscuit’ and a demonstration of the capabilities of the high-performance Stingray powerboat supplied by Nowra Powerboats.

It was the first time wakeboarding for the mayor and his family and they all managed to get up and enjoy a ride, but it was the fun on the biscuit that was the highlight.

“Riding the biscuit was great for family dynamics.

“Parents have far too little fun with their kids these days and it was great

for me to be on with my sons and my wife on with our girls having fun together.

“The adrenalin only adds to the fun with that little voice in your head that says “I will NOT let go”, and I didn’t”, he said.

And would the mayor recommend the experience to other South Coast locals or visitors?

“Absolutely.

“It’s fantastic family fun at an affordable price in a region that is so well suited to this kind of activity with its beautiful waterways.

Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men.

Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife.

Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and

picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest.While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.

Murramarang National ParkMurramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.

This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.

Cullendulla Creek Nature ReserveThe reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.
