The history of the South Central farm is spotted with conflicts between land owners and land users, a complicated and messy space. There is a legal truth to this situation as well as a moral and subjective truth.

The truth in general is that both truths are true. In the 1990s, a community had embraced this land as a public resource (which it was) after a proposal to build an incinerator failed to pass the litmus test with the residents of South Central LA.

Unfortunately, after the commu-nity had been established, own-ership changed hands and a pri-vate land owner wanted to use his new acquisition just like any real-estate developer does.

Long story short, the property was bulldozed and the beauty of the South Central Farm was lost. The best part about this story is that a new farm is beginning to grow.

Integrating com-munities with the resources they need to become financially in-dependent from structures that eco-nomically prohibit upward mobility.

This is what a community is.

While building economic indepen-dence is one rea-son why the farm worked so well, another is the fact that a true com-munity forsters a sense of family and mutual depen-dence. This leads to healthy people.

awThe problem with the law is that it does not always serve the people it is supposed to. Many people have pointed out, that the role of government is to protect people in the minority from being overwhelmed by the sheer force of the majority.

This may seem counterintuitive in a democratic society, but in fact, it is a keystone in the way our world functions. This situation typifies the types of con-flicts that can occur between a powerful majority and a small minority. You see, the private land owner was in the minori-ty, and the law protected his interests.

But who is right in this situation? Is it the people who are all standing on humanistic grounds, or is it the landowner who has a legal right to develop the land any way he wants?

What is right is not always easy to find.

The South Central Farm is just a collection of

people. People adapt.

We’ve learned that in many

situations, the law does not listen to subtlety. The law

is a blunt tool and is not designed to delicately resolve

conflicts.

Today there is a new farm being built.
