Prior to the league’s All-Star break, SC had won seven of their last nine contests, including consecutive victories over Jacksonville and a 4-2 defeat of Atlanta on Saturday before falling to Orlando 2-1 on Sunday. Norfolk entered the break after losing a series to Greenville. Friday’s matchup is the seventh of 12 contests between the two South Division clubs during the 2019-20 season. SC has won four of the first six meetings thus far prior to tonight. The Stingrays are in first place in the South Division standings with 64 points in 40 contests this season and allow a league-low 2.03 goals per game while boasting the top penalty kill in the league at 90.8%. Norfolk is in seventh place in the division standings with 27 points, sitting 11 behind Orlando for the final postseason spot in the table. While the Admirals have struggled on the offensive end, they’ve done better on special teams this season, converting on 17.1% of their man-advantage opportunities while successfully killing off 82% of penalties. Solar Bears Score Late To Edge Past Stingrays Trevor Olson scored with less than two minutes remaining to give the Orlando Solar Bears a 2-1 decision at the hands of the South Carolina Stingrays on Sunday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum. Forward Dan DeSalvo had the lone goal of the contest for South Carolina, while goaltender Logan Thompson turned aside 28 Orlando shots in a losing effort. The Rays had the only power play goal of the game and finished 1-for-5 on the man-advantage. SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYSOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYScouting The AdmiralsNorfolk has some ground to make up during the second half of the season after a slow start to the year and currently sits in seventh place in the South Division with a record of 11-25-5 and 27 points. Forward Josh Holmstrom leads the club on the offensive end with 25 points this year on eight goals and 17 assists. Just behind him, Roman Ammirato, who recently played in the ECHL’s All-Star Classic after he was acquired earlier ths season in a trade with Greenville, has 16 points in his first 18 games with the Ads on four goals and 12 assists. Rookie attacker Alex Rodriguez has a team-high 11 goals as well as 19 total points. Defender Johnny Coughlin leads the team’s blueliners with 16 points (8g, 8a). In net, Brandon Halverson has played in 18 games, posting a 0.905 save percentage, while newly re-assigned Michael McNiven has also played 18 ECHL games this season split between three different team.

All-Time History vs. Norfolk South Carolina has an all-time record of 29-22-2-3 against theAdmirals dating back to the beginning of the 2015-16 season. TheRays went 6-1-1 against Norfolk in eight meetings during 2017-18,but were just 2-6-0 against the Ads last year in 2018-19. This seasonthe two teams will see each other for 12 games, which is tied withOrlando for the Stingrays’ most common opponent on their 2019-20 slate. The Rays have won four of the first six meetings betweenthe two clubs this year.

Top-Notch Goaltending Tandem Stingrays goaltenders Logan Thompson and Parker Milner are two of the top two netminders in ECHL and continued their success last week, combining to allow just five goals in the team’s four games. Thompson allowed just three goals in two starts last week, holding on to his lead in the ECHL’s goals-against average and save percentage categories with marks of 1.86 and 0.938 respectively. Thompson’s 16 wins are also tied for third-most in the league. Milner posted his league-leading 6th shutout of the season on Wednesday night in Jacksonville and is second in the ECHL in GAA (1.95) and third in save percentage (0.928).

Captain Cherny Leads The Way Team captain Andrew Cherniwchan led the team with five points in the club’s four games last week on three goals and two assists. Two of his tallies came shorthanded on back-to-back days during wins on Friday and Saturday night. Cherniwchan also leads the team with a +27 rating on the season which is 4th-highest in the ECHL.

Powerful Parisi Defenseman Tom Parisi followed up his five-point week with four more points on three goals and an assist in four games last week. After netting a tally in Jacksonville on Wednesday, he scored his eighth and ninth goals of the year in Saturday’s win over Atlanta. The defender’s 25 points rank him eighth in scoring among ECHL defenseman, while his nine goals are fourth-most in the league from the blueline and his +18 rating is 4th-best.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS HOCKEYLeaders Against Norfolk Forward Dan DeSalvo leads the Stingrays in scoring this season against the Admirals, posting eight points in six games on two goals and six assists. Defender Tom Parisi has also been a big factor on the offensive end, scoring seven points on two goals and five assists. Forwards Max Novak (2g, 4a) and Matthew Weis (1g, 5a) have each earned six points apiece against Norfolk. Goaltender Parker Milner has two wins in three appearances against the Admirals, while Logan Thompson is 1-1 in two starts. Milner has a goals-against average of 2.55 with eight goals surrendered to the division foe.

Milner Named ECHL Goaltender of the Week Stingrays goaltender Parker Milner was named the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Week for Jan. 13-19. It is the second time this season, and third time in his career, that the Pittsburgh native has received the weekly honor from the league. Milner went 2-0-0 with one shutout, a 1.00 goals-against average and a save percentage of .968 in two appearances last week. The 29-year-old stopped all 25 shots he faced in a 4-0 win at Jacksonville on Wednesday and made 36 saves in a 4-2 victory over Atlanta on Saturday.

Charbonneau Keeps ProducingForward Jonathan Charbonneau had three more points last week for SC, scoring goals in wins on Wednesday and Friday. The attacker now has points in 11 of his last 15 games and has totaled 18 points on nine goals and nine assists in 32 games this season.

Top-Ranked Penalty Kill South Carolina currently has the best penalty killing percentage in the ECHL, discarding 90.8% of their opponents power play opportunities during the 2019-20 season. In 153 times shorthanded this season, the Rays have allowed just 14 power play goals. SC has been particularly good on the penalty kill in their 19 home contests, allowing just four goals during 70 power play chances to give themselves a 94.3% success rate which also leads the league. On the road, South Carolina has killed off 88.0% of their 83 penalties.

Rays Win Fifth Straight On Military Appreciation NightThree goals by defensemen in the opening period gave the South Carolina Stingrays an early lead and helped the team to a 4-2 win over the Atlanta Gladiators in front of 6,705 fans on Saturday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. Blueliner Tom Parisi netted two of the first period tallies for South Carolina, while Max Novak had two assists and goaltender Parker Milner made 36 saves to pick up his 13th victory of the season. The Stingrays became the first ECHL team to reach 30 wins in the standings during the 2019-20 season.

Stingrays Take Over ECHL Points Lead With 4-1 WinThe Stingrays got ahead early with two goals in the first and defeated Jacksonville by a final score of 4-1 for their 4th straight win Friday night.
