Welcome to the Spring/Summer issue of South Belfast Life!

In this issue we meet a host of different people, some you will

have heard of and some you will not. But they all have two things

in common, they all love south Belfast and have worked within the

area to make it a better place.

All areas have a history. In this issue local historian Aidan

Campbell shows us some of south Belfast’s best known locations as

they looked in the past.

South Belfast is home to some of the biggest sporting fanatics in the

country. From the most popular to perhaps some of the more obscure

we got out and about to catch up with locals as they participated

in or supported their favourite sporting events.

Both locals and visitors to south Belfast are spoilt for choice when

it comes to eating out. In this issue we feature a number of the area’s

most popular eateries. We check out some of the new dining spots

making their mark in the area - if you are not hungry now, you soon

will be!

Feature writer and Ulster Tatler columnist, Jane Hardy tell us….

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE?How long have you got? I wrote my first published piece for the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals magazine, on a cat that visited called Felix, and earned a guinea. At 16, I wrote about a painting holiday in Provence for The Lady and earned a little more. After university, where I wrote for the Durham student paper, I returned to Kent, TEFL-ed (taught English as a foreign language) for a few months, then wrote to SHE magazine.

As luck would have it, they needed a writing sub, I got the job and ended up as features editor. Happy days, learning from the best (Eric Bailey, Joyce Hopkirk), interviewing big beasts (Thatcher, John Hurt, Tebbit, the Monty Pythons etc) and having fun. Later on, I freelanced in London, wrote a column for the Sunday People supplement.

Since landing in Belfast ten years ago, have been feature journalist on the Belfast Telegraph (more fun and covered the Royal wedding) and now freelance for publications including the excellent Ulster Tatler, The Irish News, Culture NI and occasionally The Sunday Times. And sometimes they let me onto Radio Ulster!

HOW DO YOU SPEND A TYPICAL DAY AT WORK?No such thing for me now, but I pitch several stories a week, have regular gigs like the Tatler interviews which I love doing, and write up in the dining room at home aka my study. I also do quite a bit of arts reviewing, mainly theatre with some music, which is how I first got into journalism, doing reviews for The Kentish Gazette in Canterbury.

HOW DO YOU RELAX IN YOUR SPARE TIME?By playing the piano, drawing at the superb (and free) Saturday art class at the Ulster Museum, meditating in the beautiful St Patrick’s Church, Donegall Street, and enjoying a Chardonnay at The errigle.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT LIVING/WORKING OFF THE ORMEAU ROAD?The buzz which is slightly south London. When working on Homefinder, the Belfast Telegraph’s property supplement, with my friend and colleague Helen Carson who edited it, we joked that you could never put “Ormeau Road” in a piece of copy without the adjectives “bustling” and “vibrant”.

WHERE DO YOU LIKE TO sOcIaLIsE On THE ORmEaU ROaD? Cafe culture has happily overtaken our quarter and we now have seven great cafes near our home. I like them all from Boden Park to the Petit ormeau (great patisserie) and Kaffe-o. But my absolute favourite is the Soul food Cafe, now returned to its rightful home. Jason the owner and the delightful team of Lara, Mar, Sophie, Ming and of course Edita the cook do a fantastic job and it’s one of the most chilled cafes I have been to. Plus the scrambled eggs are outstanding.

WHaT Is YOUR FaVOURITE HIDDEn GEm On THE ORmEaU ROaD? WHY? Funnily enough, it’s the ormeau road Library where I sometimes go to work in company. The staff are knowledgeable and charming and you meet friends and new people in a civilised atmosphere.

WHaT Is YOUR FaVOURITE REsTaURanT/caFE On THE ORmEaU ROaD? WHY?It has to be L’etoile, old school French with legendary garlic saute potatoes. Eating there is like visiting a Paris banlieue for a couple of hours, ie magnifique! There’s also a newcomer in the Ormeau Road, a cafe delightfully called The Big Sammich (right next to Soul Food, as it happens). Named after the owner’s daughter’s pronunciation of sandwich, it sells the best soups in town, with bread, for a bargain price of £2. And the home made chocolate brownies are awesome.

Harvey Memorial LectureMarilynne Robinson, the Pulitzer Prize winning author, delivered the recent Rev. KD Harvey Memorial Lecture at McCracken Memorial Presbyterian Church. The American author, who won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her book Gilead, spoke on the subject of Varieties of Religious Understanding.

South Belfast : HISTORY

South Belfast -Through Time‘Belfast Through Time’ is Aidan Campbell’s latest local history book, it follows on from the publication of 11 local histories covering areas of east Belfast and one on south Belfast. On this occasion the theme is Greater Belfast. The book takes the form of a number of views of many of the areas of Belfast from years ago, especially from old postcards and these scenes are compared with a modern photographs taken from, where possible, the same location. In these extracts we focus on the south of the city and find out just how much south Belfast changed over the years.

ShafteSbury SquareThe 8th Earl of Shaftesbury married Lady Harriet Chichester on 22nd August 1857. She was the only daughter of George Chichester, 3rd Marquis of Donegall whose family had founded Belfast in the 1600s and this happy event apparently restored the Donegall family fortunes. This was a residential area at the junction of Great Victoria Street and Dublin Road and in the 1870s the houses had front gardens with railings although today it is mostly restaurants and offices. The white building on the corner (below) is the Ulster Bank which was built in 1960, on the site of the former Magdalen House School, and created a stir when it commissioned two untitled cast aluminium works of public art that look like human figures, for the corner façade of its building. With typically Belfast humour the statues were dubbed ‘Draft’ and ‘Overdraft’.

BELGRAVIAWhen the large terraced development of ‘Belgravia’, on the corner of Ulsterville Avenue and Lisburn Road was constructed in the late 1870s the occupants represented a cross-section of the burgeoning middle-classes in late Victorian Belfast. Worthy occupants included doctors, railway managers, grain merchants, flour merchants, linen merchants, fireclay and alabaster merchants and a missionary. By the 1940s it is described as Belgravia Hotel (above) and by the 1950s Belgravia Private Hotel which became a residential hostel for elderly people run by the Northern Ireland Housing Association. This lovely building was destroyed by a bomb during ‘The Troubles’ in the 1980s and the Belgravia was totally rebuilt in 1985 containing sheltered and retirement housing (left).

CREsCEnt ARts CEntREUpper and Lower Crescents were completed with grand housing in the 1850s containing what has been described as ‘highly imposing stucco terraces in the Bath manner’. At 1 University Road (below) on the corner of Lower Crescent stands the present Crescent Arts Centre which during major renovations was awarded the UK ‘Man and the Biosphere’ Urban Wildlife Award for Excellence in 2010 for preserving the 136 year old breeding colony for threatened swifts. This was the home of Victoria College, Belfast’s premier girls’ grammar school which was founded as the Ladies Collegiate by Mrs Margaret Byers at Wellington Place in 1859, moved to Lower Crescent in 1873 and Cranmore in the 1970s. Queen Victoria graciously granted the royal title in 1870.

Ginger contains a substance called gingerols and these too are known to calm symptoms of inflammation including swelling and pain. Try using fresh ginger a few times a week in cooking

exTra VirGin OliVe OilLong considered the secret of the healthy Mediterranean diet extra virgin olive oil is known to contain specific compounds that act as a natural anti-inflammatory. In fact the substance oleocanthol, which gives olive oil its peppery flavour was found to have pain relieving activity equal to ibuprofen and is also effective when applied to the skin. Dress vegetables or salads with raw extra virgin olive oil every day as you won’t experience the same benefits when you cook with it.

TOmaTOesThe humble tomato contains the pigment lycopene, which is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. In fact by cooking a tomato you increase its lycopene content so a roasted tomato or a slow cooked tomato sauce will provide more lycopene than a raw tomato so why not cook up a lovely Spaghetti Bolognese. Lycopene is known to play an important role in reducing prostate inflammation.

sunshineOk, so it’s not exactly a food and we don’t really have ready access to sunshine in Northern Ireland, however, the action of sunshine on our skin stimulates a chemical process in

our body that results in the production of vitamin D. Vitamin D is more commonly associated with bone health but more recent research indicates that it has an important role in controlling inflammation and autoimmune activity. This may explain why many individuals with inflammatory conditions find they improve in the summer and get worse in the winter.

Say Goodbye to Unwanted Hair For Good!

Summer is nearly here - and with the elusive warmer weather approaching (I live in hope!) it’s almost time to roll out the barbecue and dig out our barely worn summer wardrobes. Whether you are heading away this summer or enjoying a much needed staycation, we all want to be able to wear our summer clothes without the hassle of unwanted body hair!

If you’re tired of shaving and the thought of waxing fills you with fear, then worry not, we have the answer to your hair removal needs! IPL hair removal is a safe and effective means of permanently removing unwanted hair. It can be used to treat hair on both the face and body.

So how does it work? IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) emits a broad spectrum of light energy, which is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light energy quickly turns to heat which destroys the growing cells that form the hair follicle. Hairs must be treated whilst in their growing phase; approximately 20-40% of hair will be in this phase at any given time which is why it generally takes six treatments on average to treat all hairs in the ‘growing’ cycle. With treatment time taking as little as ten minutes every six weeks, you can say goodbye to time consuming hair removal! There is no downtime associated with this treatment so immediately after treatment you can carry on with your day to day life without having to worry about unwanted hair!

Although plucking and waxing is not recommended between treatments, you can shave or trim hair from the area so there is no need to worry about regrowth. As you progress with treatments, you will notice that the hair growth becomes finer and a lot more sparse.

Cardiac (heart) disease is very common in dogs of all shapes and sizes. Unfortunately, in many large breed dogs, it can be a completely hidden genetic problem that is present from birth. Many affected dogs show no symptoms whatsoever until it is too late. Sadly, at Flynn Vets recently we have diagnosed several young and middle aged medium and large dogs with serious congenital heart conditions.

One common such condition is Dilated Cardiomyopathy, also known as DCM. In DCM, the heart gradually becomes weak and balloon-like as time goes by. Some dogs gradually start to become tired while running, but others seem completely normal until suddenly collapsing, either passing out or even simply dying when having fun in the park.

Fortunately, there is a safe and non-invasive blood test that measures the level of strain on the dog’s myocytes (cardiac cells), and

helps us to gauge whether your dog is at risk. This test is relatively new and we would like to bring it to the attention of dog owners in Belfast.

Queen’s Unveil New Look BoathouseThe 2016 University Boat Race between Queen’s University Belfast and Trinity College Dublin, was launched recently by Belfast Deputy Lord Mayor Alderman Guy Spence. The launch of this year’s boat race took place alongside the opening of Queen’s newly refurbished Boathouse, following a £1.2M investment by Queen’s Sport. The Lagan landmark has been refurbished to offer a world-class Boathouse for Queen’s rowers, and now offers a floating pontoon, as well as purpose-built storage for the Queen’s fleet.This year’s University Boat Race takes place on Saturday, 11 June.

The Vikings are ComingThe 16th annual Viking Boat Race took place recently at Cutters Wharf. Teams came from all over Northern Ireland to participate in the fun event, and to help raise funds for the NSPCC. If you have been living on another planet for the last 7 months then there is a slight, but only a slight, possibility that you may not have heard that Northern Ireland have qualified for Euro 2016.

Victory over Greece in October last year ensured that Michael O’Neill’s side made history by becoming the first ever Northern Ireland side to qualify for the European Championships. Ever since the full-time whistle blew on that unforgettable night at Windsor Park all attentions turned towards the draw for the competition, the scramble for tickets and of course rearranging the

summer holidays to somewhere, anywhere in France.

Geographically the draw was kind to Northern Ireland. Nice, Paris and Lyon will make for fantastic destinations, in terms of football, it could not be much tougher.Germany, Poland and Ukraine will be the opponents for the Green and White Army. But, with so many travelling supporters and a wave of momentum behind them from an extraordinary qualifying campaign, Northern Ireland will go into the tournament full of optimism.

If you are not fortunate enough to be making the trip to France, there will of course be a host of bars and clubs across

south Belfast screening all the games, not to mention the recently announced Fanzone at Titanic Belfast, which is free and family friendly. South Belfast will be a buzz throughout the tournament and we hope everyone can get out and support the team during this historic event.

I had heard really good reviews of a new place in Stranmillis called Latitude so my friend and I decided to book a table. Once inside, we realised that people were right in giving it five stars.

The restaurant is situated upstairs and it has an exquisite décor that immediately makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. Sebastian, the waiter, welcomed us and led us to his favourite table. It was right beside the window and was illuminated with a candle. The jazz music and the dim lights added magic to the room, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Sebastian approached us to recommend the reblochon pissaladière which consists of traditional warm bread from Nice with caramelised onion and reblochon cheese. It was mouth-watering and gave us time to make our choice from the wide selection of dishes that were on the menu.

I ordered calamari for starter and my friend went for the “prawn gratinée”. The list of starters included many more tempting options, such as chicken liver parfait, sun-dried tomato and goat cheese bruschetta or moules marinière.

I am a big seafood lover and calamari is one of the most popular Spanish tapas so I had to try them. The breadcrumbed squid was sautéed in garlic, lemon and parsley, served with garlic mayonnaise, and was so tasty that I felt at home for a minute.

The prawn gratinée arrived presented in a lovely mini pan, with king prawns tossed in white wine, garlic, chilli and tomato sauce with toasted garlic and parsley croutons. You could tell by my friend’s face that they were

worth a try so I took a small portion and we both agreed that the spicy touch really made the dish unique.

As we finished the starters, we took some time to analyze every detail. The exotic Buddha featured on one of the walls, all the candles lighting up the room and people soaking up the atmosphere while enjoying their dinner.

Then Sebastian came to tell us about the glorious steaks that were on the menu and we didn’t think twice. Magnificently served on a wooden board, our 10oz sirlion steaks came dressed with peppercorn sauce and accompanied by tobacco onions, grilled tomato salad and garlic baby potatoes. They were superb. Although we were full, we

couldn’t leave without trying the desserts. And it was the best decision we could have made, because the lemon posset was like heaven in a champagne glass.

Served with berry compote and short bread biscuits, it melts in your mouth like a mousse and its freshness makes it the perfect choice to end your dinner.

When we looked at the time, we couldn’t believe that we had spent two and a half hours there. It was such a good experience that we promised to be back very soon.

They also have a room upstairs where they host all kinds of events, which features a projector and allows you to play music until late, making your celebrations unforgettable.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR CAREER PATH TO DATE?Since childhood my no.1 passion has been baking. I initially learned how to bake by helping my mother, then left school and made it my career. Several years ago I got the opportunity to work at the Presbyterian Church in Prague, I worked in their coffee shops attached to the church, I lived there for six years, while working there I learned new techniques, unique to the Czech Republic.On my return to Belfast I worked in several church based establishments until I met Peter McCloskey. Two years ago we opened the first olivers on Belmont Road, where we won the UK wide award for my scones. Six months ago we decided to open this branch on the Lisburn road, I run the bakery end. It’s a fantastic job, as it’s an open kitchen I meet the customers every day, they have become friends.

WERE YOU NOT CONCERNED WiTH THE COmPETiTiON ON THE LiSBURN ROAD?In a word, no. I believed in the business plan Peter came up with, the location was perfect, our barista Andrew, is the best barista I have ever worked with, and we now have the pleasure of working with Kamila, the most pleasant girl you could possibly work with. HOW DO YOU RELAx iN YOUR SPARE TimE? I spend my free time lunching with friends, Belfast has such a great variety of eating places, I go to the cinema, I’m an avid reader and I help with the catering at church.

Lowe Memorial Table Tennis ClubMembers of Lowe Memorial Table Tennis Club gathered around the tables at Dunmurry Golf Club in mid January for their annual Christmas/New Year dinner. The Club meets on Tuesday mornings for those retired or not working, for light exercise. On Wednesday evenings the club meets for more competitive play or simply to clear away the mid week blues. Sing for LifeThe Belfast-based Sing For Life community choir for people affected by cancer recently took a musical trip to Wales.Sixty-five members headed off for a four-day tour where they performed with the Welsh cancer choir Tenovus, which inspired the for-mation of Sing for Life. Sing for Life, a partnership between Cancer Focus Northern Ireland and the Crescent Arts Centre, is a vibrant and lively choir that was formed in 2012 and now has over 100 members.



Belfast South Methodist Church recently hosted a Scottish Ceilidh. The evening of traditional Scottish music and dancing, with a light supper, which was held at the Agape Centre, Lisburn Road, proved to be a tremendous success for the church.

As part of its fundraising efforts a fashion show was held recently at the Life Church, Bruce Street, Belfast. in the early days what inspired you to get involved in kitchen design? This started by accident. At 16 years old, I didn’t have any idea about what I wanted to do, but it was suggested that I should go to a company in Newtownards who were looking for apprentice kitchen installers. I served my apprenticeship and worked there for six years, before I was approached about going to Orion Kitchens in Mallusk in the summer of 1990. I worked there for 12 years as kitchen installer and then installations manager before being approached by a leading German kitchen retailer about taking over the role of installations & project manager. In 2006, I had a conversation about opening the In-toto franchise in Belfast and they suggested that I should do the designs myself. After 22 years in the industry, I certainly had the

experience, and 9 years later I’m still at it.

Where do you draw your creativity from at the start of each individual project? This is very much dictated by the client’s requirements and budget. Sometimes you can look at the room shape and visualise what may be a great concept, but there is no point in creating an all singing, all dancing, spectacular £40,000 design if the client has a £10,000 budget. You only make yourself look stupid for not having listened to the brief, as well as upsetting the client for wasting their time. I will look through different interior design magazines and brochures for different ideas too.

for any young person seeking out a career in kitchen design – what’s the best advice you can give them?Keep it simple. I think a lot of designers make things overly complicated and forget about the basics and while it all looks great on the computer designs, it has to

be functional and practical.

Have you seen a shift in kitchen design and kitchen spec since the start of the credit crunch? is the market now bouncing back?The client will always want the best quality products, whether that be furniture, worktops, appliances etc, but they are more aware of price and will look for two or three prices from different suppliers. Very few clients will ever ask about credit terms or finance options as this was partly responsible for the credit crunch, but confidence is rising in the retail market and our manufacturers in Germany have been really helpful in support through the crunch by absorbing a lot of the manufacturing costs. What are the best and/or most challenging aspects of your roles?The best thing is certainly going to see the client when the project is finished in order to sign off the completed kitchen and get a few photos. It is always

worth getting feedback on the delivery men, different tradesmen, and kitchen installers. Thankfully I have a really good team in the background, who all go about their jobs in a professional attitude. The most challenging thing is trying to help people who have been let down by other companies through either bad design, faulty product, or bad workmanship. Unfortunately the old saying “buy cheap and pay twice” still applies

What does a typical day’s work involve?I normally try to go onsite to see how the installers are getting on between 8.00 and 9.00am or do a survey for a forthcoming kitchen. Once I get into the showroom, I will be dealing with e mails, social media updates, completing designs, costing designs, furniture orders, appliance, sink and tap orders, as well as the usual phone calls, and helping clients.

What are your typical clients looking for?Quality Design – Most clients want something different than their previous kitchen, and I will try to find out as much about the client, their lifestyle, and their family requirements when looking at the design. First and foremost it must be practical and functional. Quality product - The furniture is all built in Germany, where there is no compromise on quality, and 85% of each kitchen will be assembled in factory. In-toto Belfast is a premier partner for Miele, Neff, AEG and Smeg – all quality engineered products from Germany. We have also been recognised as a Consentino Elite Premier Studio for our knowledge and experience of dealing with Dekton, Silestone, and Sensa worktops. Quality Service – Installation and backup is the bug bear of most companies, but In-toto head office will contact clients to

ask their opinions and views on my showroom, service, aftersales help etc. I have been lucky enough to have received the In-toto service care excellence award every year, and also best store in franchise. What are the main trends going to be for 2016? Handleless kitchens are the big trend – very minimalist, clean lines, more drawer storage. Concrete effect doors have been very well received over the last few months, with more colours starting to come through rather than white and cream including Mustard Yellow and Sunburnt Orange. Sensa Granite and Silestone Quartz are still very much aspirational products that most people would like, but a new product called Dekton is really grabbing the headlines. 100% quartz, non scratch, non stain with a choice of 12mm, 20mm, or box edged in a wide range of colours.

Action Cancer are looking for volunteers of all ages to join their shop teams across Northern Ireland. Volunteers are a much

valued resource that charities, especially those operating shops, rely on to carry out very important work during the year.

Since the launch of their new look boutique outlets and the Pre-Loved clothing collection, Action Cancer have seen the number of volunteering opportunities grow significantly as the demand

for quality Pre-Loved product increases.

Operating ten boutiques and eight other outlets including furniture stores, Katherine Young from Action Cancer

commented on the opportunities available and the valuable contribution volunteers make when giving their time freely

to help such a wonderful cause, “Action Cancer shops rely on over 160 volunteers across our network of stores most of

whom actively take part in running each of our boutiques and furniture outlets. We are able to offer volunteers the

opportunity to gain new skills, make new friends and are able to help those wishing to gain experience when re-entering

the workplace.”

World PremiereThe creative team of Martin Lynch, Conor Grimes and Alan McKee, reunited for The History of the Peace (accordin’ to my Ma), following on from the success of The History of the Troubles (According to My Da). The world premiere of the new production took place at the Grand Opera House, and it was a great success. The story follows Karen Reid, a Belfast community worker, struggling to keep house and family together in the face of Northern Ireland’s unique form of peace.
