    old tmers speak of walkways dsappearg, small structures sldg ad

    the stg of the sad. The dues were a major problem. Some were 50 feet

    to 70 feet hgh. i the late 1920s, developers from Hawa made a deal to

    supply Wakk Beach wth Mahatta Beach sad. The sad was loaded

    oto Sata Fe Ralroad cars ad trasported to the harbor Sa Pedro ad

    the oto shps or barges. Ths cotued for almost te years.

    A steady wd whppg across the barre dues made lfe mserable for

    the frst hardy poeers. Oe of them, Mrs. Dorcas igram, set dow her

    vews for posterty. But my most beg shrak from the greetg chll

    ad dak of a wd forever blowg oer the sad dues of Hermosa.

    May of the early settlers collected ther ow arrow plaks ad bult

    precarous walkways betwee ofte-frequeted spots. The harder oes

    ddt bother -- they plodded through the sad. The frst offcal survey

    was made the year 1901 for the boardwalk o the Strad Hermosa

    Beach. A short tme afterward a record 500,000 feet of Orego pe was

    stalled alog a mle ad oe-half of the Strad. Ths was duly recorded asa otable achevemet by loyal Hermosas, but drew seers from earby

    Redodo resdets who called t, a walk to the mddle of owhere. Hgh

    tdes sometmes washed away portos of ths walkway. i 1914 part of t

    was replaced wth cemet. The remag two thousad feet o the orth

    was completed cemet 1926.

    Durg the early 1900s Mahatta Beach, plaks were also placed o

    the sad to create Mahatta Aveue, ad boardwalks were bult alog

    the Strand and on side streets.

    i 1903, the Pacfc Ralway Compay whch merged wth the PacfcElectrc 1910, stalled a track alog the oceafrot extedg from

    Los Ageles to Sata Moca ad the south to Redodo Beach passg

    through Mahatta. The tracks were just west of The Strad where the

    bcycle path s today. The Red Cars would ru o ths le utl 1940.

    Today, the Strad through Mahatta Beach ad Hermosa Beach s home

    to some of the most desrable homes the world.

    Some say there is no lie East o Sepulveda,

    however, those in the know, know there is

    more lie East o Sepulveda in comparison to the

    rest o Manhattan Beach.

    There is more outdoor space, more square

    ootage, wider streets with more parking, more

    distance rom your neighbors, more privacy,

    bigger back yards, more sidewalks, and larger

    East Manhattan as described in real estateterms is bordered by Sepulveda Blvd to the

    West, Aviation Blvd. to the East, Artesia Blvd. to

    Intermediate, is adjacent to Polliwog Park.

    There are also multiple pre-schools, plus the

    ever-popular Montessori School located near

    Pennekamp Elementary.

    In a city which has undergone a recent state o re-

    development, East Manhattan has seen its share

    o it. Ongoing and rapid change is apparent,

    as the original World War II era housing or

    employees o (the then dominant) local deense

    contractors such as Lockheed Martin, Northrop

    Grumman and Hughes has been greatly replacedby new, larger homes.

    Many o the homes built in the 40s and 50s were

    very modest; averaging about 1200 square eet

    with 3 bedrooms and 1 or 2 baths. Walk-in closets

    were not yet invented nor were private baths or

    each member o the amily, as is the norm today.

    Current demand has been or signicantly larger

    homes with modern amenities, such as gourmet

    kitchens, large amily rooms, large bedrooms

    and oodles o bathrooms.

    Developers and home owners have been re-

    building many o these old homes at a rapid pace

    since the late 80s, though new construction has

    recently come to a near halt with the market

    downturn--pleasing some, while sending

    developers and contractors scrambling or workwherever they can nd it.

    A ull East Manhattan lot is considered a 50 x

    150 oot lot, or 7500 square eet. The deep lots

    allow or a pool- sized back yard, with 5 oot

    side set backs. The setbacks result in situating

    you 10 eet away rom your neighbors: a great
