Warren Buffet once said “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.” In this economic environment the ques-

tion of price versus value is more relevant than ever. At South Bay Digs, our ability to deliver on our value proposition to our customers is our ultimate quest—it’s our passion. That’s why we continue to explore new ways to innovate and integrate the most relevant communication channels available to con-nect the home consumer to the local real estate professional.

We recently launched our free Open House Directory on www.SouthBayDigs.com—where realtors can upload their upcoming open houses and home consumers can stay abreast of open houses of interest. We’ve also built a robust market research platform on our website, where consumers and realtors alike can deep dive local market trends and sign up for free real-time market reports in the neighborhoods

of interest. Our new QR Code technology allows you to use your phone to view property tours instanta-neously and get detailed information on a specific property or other advertised offering. We’re creating the South Bay’s only online real estate directory at www.SouthBayDigs.com that has detailed information on every active real estate professional in the area with contact information, bios and more.

Thanks to everyone who attended our launch party at the fabulous Lawrence Harris Residence in Hermosa Beach—a great time was had by all. Be sure to read our feature profile on Growing Wild, a local

floral business in Manhattan Beach who recently celebrated their 20th anniversary. And don’t miss “The Fireplace Make-over” on page 20 for a chance to sit by the fire and warm your soul. Enjoy –

Growing Wild A floral fable of successBy Pamela Corante-Hansen

once upon a time, two flaxen-haired twin sisters with Pepperdine degrees and a knack for beach

volleyball presented their enterprising parents with a tiny seed of an idea. This was no ordinary seed, for it contained the potential to bring love, beauty and peace to everyone who was touched by the fruits of its harvest. The parents gave their blessing, and the girls planted the seed in a soil rich with creativity and business smarts. They sprinkled it with posi-tive thoughts and hard work, and the seed grew into a beguiling floral shop housed in a seaside cottage. The sisters called it Growing Wild.

Twenty years later, this Manhattan Beach institution is celebrating two decades of gracing homes, weddings, parties and special events with wildly original, European-inspired floral creations and silk botanicals. South Bay Digs spent a sunny Southern California morning with Lisa Gallien and Lee Hoven-Bakos, the founders and joint creative force behind the fairy-tale flower shop where happily ever after happens every day.

SOUTH BAY DIGS: Your shop is gorgeous. Tell me how you decided to become florists.LISA: We’ve loved doing arts and crafts since we were little. My dad would take us to the flower mart in down-town L.A. and we would buy crafts supplies and make all the Christmas gifts.LEE: It was an easy transition to do something creative. We were business majors, and my mom, who had been living in Europe, said, ‘Girls, just do something that makes you happy.’ This was the one thing we wanted to do. LISA: Our parents were supportive of the endeavor and helped us make it happen.LEE: We started small, doing parties and weddings out of our house. And soon we were able to open up a retail operation.

Some florists focus exclusively on a particular niche, such as weddings. What’s your specialty?LISA: We have a lot of corporate clients, but we do flowers for the home, as well. Everything we do is hand crafted. You can’t buy it anywhere else; it has a special touch to it. We do a lot with candle arrangements, garlands and wreaths. We follow the seasons. In the summer we had wreaths with sea-shells, aqua blue accents and sea glass. We’ll go into people’s homes and help them decorate. For fall and Christmas, we’ll do mantles…LEE: And topiaries. We do a little bit of everything.LISA: The variety has kept our business going. We can do everything from

custom arrangements to fresh flowers and silk botanicals. We’ll also do weddings and parties. And we have a fantastic staff that can support all of that.

That makes a huge difference.LEE: We have amazing employees who have kept the continuity going in the store. Some of them have been here 10, 15 years. They know our customers and what they want. We get to work with really great people every day—they’re like family.

As you mark your 20th

year in business, how do you plan on staying innovative?LISA: Something we’re really excited about is our new ‘Mindful Intention’ arrangements. Every flower has a meaning, and we’ve been doing a lot of research on which combinations of flowers have a particular significance. We’ve designed arrangements to attract certain at-tributes.LEE: One of them is an arrangement for wealth, so we include flowers that represent wealth, and attach a stone to enhance the energy.LISA: Flowers are from Mother Earth, after all.LEE: And they do vibrate energy.

I’m fascinated by the whole idea of flowers having meaning. I once read about a Chinese emperor who sent thousands of peonies to a woman he loved. LISA: They represent love, and we have a love arrangement with peonies in it.LEE: I got married in the month of May because it’s when peonies are in bloom.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about using floral arrange-ments to enhance their home décor?LEE: Do something organic-looking and natural. Use it to diffuse color, to brighten up a home office or bedroom. Having fresh flowers or plants is a life force. You see a fresh flower and you get positive vibrations. It’s a beau-tiful thing to have anywhere in the home. LISA: Put flowers in rooms where you always spend time—the kitchen, the dining room, somewhere you can always enjoy them. Use flowers that will last a while, like orchids, and put them in spaces you’re always looking at.

How has floral design evolved in the past 20 years, and what kinds of trends are you seeing now?LISA: It’s evolved from loose flowers to tailored, modern arrangements with monochromatic looks. LEE: You’ll see tones on tones. LISA: Silk botanicals are huge. They look so real now. Twenty years ago they didn’t. We’ve been able to create a lot of designs with silk; that’s been fun for us.LEE: Succulent gardens are a big trend right now.LISA: Now we’ve moved into fall with-- LEE: Vibrant, rich oranges. LISA: We change seasons in the store. In a

couple weeks we’re going to start seeing a lot of Christmas décor and colors.LEE: You’ll see a crisp, clean, white look with rich burgundy red-on-red tones. LISA: White’s going to be really big this year.

Switching gears a bit, what’s the most unusual order you’ve had?LISA: We’ve had to send flowers to people’s birth-days and make them look withered and black, like they were dead. Black roses. Pretty funny!

It sounds so Goth.LISA: Yeah, kind of Goth and macabre.

On that note, where do you get inspiration for your designs?LISA: It’s evolving. You might get it from nature. You might see something and kind of tweak it and make it your own.LEE: Also from traveling. We travel a lot and see things abroad and get inspired.LISA: The European shops are so beautiful. We were in Denmark and everything was avant-garde and

modern. You have to tailor what you see so that it works well for your client. LEE: And our surroundings inspire us. We love coming to work and being able to see the ocean from here.

What’s it like being sisters and working together every day? LEE: We bounce ideas off each other. We tell it to each other like it is with-out having to sugarcoat everything. We each have our own strengths and one of us may know how to deal with a certain customer better. I’m not say-ing it isn’t trying at times, particularly in these next two months when we’ll be really busy, but for the most part we’re really lucky.

What advice would you give to someone starting up a business now?LISA: Look at your market and see what you’re good at. Look at your costs and expenses and crunch the numbers. We’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go over the years and it’s disheartening because they’re wonderful businesses. They’ve been hit by the economy, but it’s all about going back to basics and doing what you do really well.

If you had to describe your life philosophy in three words, what would they be?LISA: Lucky, lucky, lucky! We feel lucky and blessed. LEE: For sure.LISA: Blessed, lucky and grateful.

It seems there’s a lot more emphasis on gratitude these days.LEE: We opened up during a recession and people probably thought we were a little crazy, but you have to believe that you can do it.

LISA: We were big into sports, and our coach at Mira Costa High School, Daelea Aldrich, was a huge influence. She instilled a belief in all these girls coming out of school that you could do anything. So we took that philosophy into our business. LEE: We never questioned whether we’d be suc-cessful. It’s all about a positive attitude.

i t’s the beginning of the football and holiday season. Everywhere houses are adorned with decorations and stores are full of seasonal “must

buys.” But what makes this time of the year special is food, family, friends, and a glowing fire in the fireplace. Fireplaces are a focal point. They invite conversation and give the most timid guest a place to sit without stand-ing out. The smell of burning wood releases the tension between your shoulders and loosens the tightest jaw. Most people assume when they buy a house the look of the fireplace is permanent and they design their room around it. This is not true! Upgrading your fireplace is easy and can

add value to your home. There are several different parts that make up a fireplace, but four areas that can change the overall look without major construction. They are the mantel, firebox, screen, and how you burn your fire.

The mantel is not only the shelf area above the hearth; it is also the decorative sides of it. There are several types of mantels made from

spa

ce

sstone, wood, brick, cement, and metal. Even though they look permanent, most mantels are attached to the outer part of the wall. It is not hard to remove and replace it. Most handy homeowners can take out a man-tel themselves. Depending on what you are planning to replace it with, installation can usually be done by you or the company you purchased your new mantel from. Play with different ideas when choosing. There are more than the traditional wood frames these days. A popular look is stone veneer. It can be placed around the hearth and up the wall, making your fireplace look larger and more dramatic. Marble or composite stone can be used in the same fashion for minimal modern sophistication. There are also stunning tiles made with texture that create eye-catching patterns, they can be attached to a raised boxed surface around the hearth or on the wall. Leave the tiles as they are or attach a thick wood or polished cement ledge across the fireplace opening for a more dramatic appearance. Look through magazines, books and on-line for ideas.

The firebox is the inside of the fireplace where the fire burns. Many are made of brick. After time, especially with wood burning fires, the brick turns black, making it appear old and dirty. To remedy this, buy a pint of black high temperature paint from a fireplace or home improvement store. This special paint is made for the inside of your fireplace and can go on gas lines and fire grates. After brushing clean the brick, brush on the paint. It absorbs into the bricks leaving a smooth clean surface without show-ing brush strokes. The inside of your fireplace looks new and brings your attention to your glowing fire and not what’s around it. Screens can add or take away from your fireplace design. Try changing it to create a new look. Darker colors make a screen disappear and keep your eye on the fire. Whereas a gold or silver toned screen will stand out and add to the design of your mantel. Glass screens provide a stylish appearance just beware of it becoming hot when burning a fire.

Fireplaces burn with wood or gas; wood log fires smell great and give you the true feeling of man versus nature. Various types of wood smell dif-ferently, so you are not only seeing and hearing the crackling fire, but your sense of smell is engaged. But it can be time consuming and not always easy to get a warm fire going. Some people opt for a gas-burning fireplace instead of wood. You instantly have a roaring smokeless fire producing heat. The most commonly burned gas fires are with man-made logs. They are l made of ceramic and painted to look like branches from various trees. Try using a spe-cies that looks similar to trees surrounding your house.

Decorative pans with glass or stone are a popular trend. The trays connect to your gas pipe the same way your fire logs do. When lit, the flame spreads along the top. It releases as much heat as the ceramic logs do and can add a modern or artsy look to your room.

Upgrading the look of your old fireplace can add value and design intention to your home. It is a simple, yet overlooked improvement most times ignored. Whether you are using your fireplace for warmth or ambi-ence, consider these few tricks. Make your fireplace as good looking as the rest of your house.
