Greensboro is coming off a narrow loss, 6-5, on Saturday night as Lakewood scored two runs in each of the first three innings to build an early lead. The BlueClaws have climbed within 2.0 games of first place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division while Greensboro remains 7.0 games back, remaining fifth in the standings. Hoppers Hurlers: Edward Cabrera, 20, makes his 11th start of the season and his fourth this season against Lakewood. He is 1-1 with 0.90 ERA (2 ER/20.0 IP) and 10 strikeouts compared to three walks in three games (three starts) against the BlueClaws, holding Garden State hitters to a .152 average (10-66). His only two scoreless outings this year have come against Lakewood, including a complete-game shutout in Game 1 of a May 20 doubleheader. He is coming off a road win at Delmarva on June 5, allowing two runs (one earned) over 5.0 innings. Cabrera has built a strong resume at home, where he is 1-2 with a 2.08 ERA (5 ER/21.2 IP) and 16 strikeouts in four games (four starts) compared to 1-3 with a 4.97 ERA (16 ER/ 29.0 IP) and 16 strikeouts in six road starts. Last season with Short-Season Batavia, he went 1-3 with a 5.30 ERA (21 ER/35.2 IP) and 32 strikeouts in 13 games (six starts). Last Time Out: Lakewood scored two runs in each of the first three innings en route to a win, 6-5, over Greensboro on Saturday. BlueClaws hitters Daniel Brito and Rodolfo Duran hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning to boost the lead. Greensboro also used the long ball with a first inning home run by Thomas Jones and a second inning blast from Will Allen. Down 6-2, Greensboro mounted a 3-run frame in the home half of the fourth. Jose Devers smacked a 2-run double, scoring Michael Hernandez and Thomas Jones, to help pull the Hoppers within a run, but the team did not score over the game’s final five innings. Lakewood reliever Connor Brogdon (2-2) earned the win, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing three runs on five hits while striking out five. Kyle Dohy tossed the final 2.1 innings of scoreless ball for the save (2). After a rough first three innings, Greensboro’s Brandon Miller (2-5) settled down to keep Lakewood off the board in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. Despite matching his longest outing of the year, he took the loss, allowing six runs on 10 hits over 7.0 frames. Do It Like Devers: One day after hitting two triples in a game, Hoppers shortstop Jose Devers continued his strong weekend at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. The 18-year-old infielder has now hit safely in five straight games since June 5, batting .455 (10-22) with a double, two triples, four RBI, and three runs scored in that span. He has also upped his season average from .250 to .276 during this stretch. In 21 games at First National Bank Field, Devers is batting .301 (25-83) compared to .253 (22- 87) in 22 road games. What Can Brown Do For You?: Micah Brown has been the Grasshoppers Swiss Army Knife in 2018, playing any position in the infield as well as right field. He has started 14 games at first base, five at second base, 12 at third base, one at shortstop (Friday’s series opener against Lakewood), and eight in right field. Brown has also spent seven games as the team’s designated hitter. His versatility was on full display on Saturday against the BlueClaws when he started the game in right field before moving to first base and later moving to second base. This season when playing first base, Brown is batting .340 (17-50) with two doubles, four home runs, and nine RBI while batting .168 (20-119) in all other instances. Not A Fan Of Being Fanned: Greensboro hitters struck out 15 times on Saturday, equaling the team’s season-high which was set on May 19 also against Lakewood. Two Hoppers, Thomas Jones and Marcos Rivera were each fanned three times as nine different Grasshoppers hitters (of 11 that played) struck out at least once. BlueClaws starter Damon Jones fanned six before two relievers Connor Brogdon (five) and Kyle Dohy (four) added to the total. IN THE WEEDS: GRASSHOPPERS NOTES

DOUBLETHETRIPLES Jose Devers became the first Grasshopper to triple twice in a game this season on June 8 against the BlueClaws. He finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI-triples, two of the team’s season-high three triples in the game. In the first inning, he scored Cameron Baranek from first base with a drive to the right-field corner, and in a fit of déjà vu, hit a similar ball in the third that also brought Baranek across the plate.

HEYNOW,YOU’REANALL-STAR

The Grasshoppers will be well-represented when in the 59th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game presented by Pizza Hut on Tuesday, June 19, at First National Bank Field with two players and four members of the field staff selected for the event. Starting pitcher Ryan Lillie joins designated hitter Lazaro Alonso as the two Grasshoppers players selected, while manager Todd Pratt, pitching coach Mark DiFelice, athletic trainer Eric Reigelsberger, and strength & conditioning coach Brady Fitzgerald will serve on the field staff for the Northern Division Squad. FIRINGBLANKSBACK-TO-BACK

The Grasshoppers tossed back-to-back shutouts on May 20 against Lakewood to run the pitching staff’s scoreless innings streak to 17.0 innings, including the final three innings May 19 against Lakewood. Since the franchise became the Grasshoppers in 2005, the team has thrown consecutive shutouts seven times, including thrice in both games of a doubleheader. For the first time since 2016 and the eighth time since the start of the 2008 season, Greensboro had two men with two home runs in the same game as both Micah Brown and Marcos Rivera hit a pair of big flies on June 1 vs. West Virginia, part of a 5-home run game for the Grasshoppers. Jhonny Santos put on a show for Hoppers fans May 21 against Kannapolis, hitting two home runs in a 5-3 win over the Intimidators in Greensboro. The Grasshoppers struck out a season-high 15 times on Saturday, May 19, against Lakewood. Greensboro previously fanned 13 times in five games this season. The three new inductees will be honored as part of the festivities surrounding the 59th Annual South Atlantic League All-Star Game, scheduled to be played on June 19, 2018, at First National Bank Field, home of the Greensboro Grasshoppers. This year’s class includes three Greensboro natives: a former player in the Western Carolina League, a former mayor and a current executive. Former Hickory Rebels player Ken Free, Former Greensboro Mayor Jim Melvin, and Greensboro Grasshopper President and General Manager Donald Moore will be inducted. A lifelong Greensboro resident who is in his 17th year as President/GM of the Greensboro club, Donald Moore has been recognized as the SAL Executive of the Year four times (2006, 2007, 2008, 2013). Under Donald’s leadership, the Grasshoppers have received the SAL Club Merit Award five times (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013), the SAL Community Service Award three times (2014, 2015, 2016) and the Bob Freitas Award, given by Baseball America to the best Class-A organization, in 2008. Donald also serves as chairman of the SAL Scheduling Committee and is also the founder and President of the North Carolina Association of Professional Baseball Teams (NCAPBT), which consists of the 10 minor league teams in North Carolina. Moore was inducted into the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame in 2010 for his outstanding service to the community through his work with the Grasshoppers and many other youth sports initiatives he has been a part of in his lifetime. Hoppers Hurlers: Trevor Rogers, 20, makes his professional debut against Kannapolis after being selected by the Marlins in the first round (13th overall) in the June 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Carlsbad (N.M.) High School. The 6’6” left-hander signed for $3.4M following a High-School All-American First Team season in 2017. He is Miami’s No. 5 Prospect according to MLB.com. In his final season at Carlsbad High, he went 11-0 with a 0.33 ERA, 134 strikeouts and 13 walks while throwing three no-hitters.

LILLIELILLIE! Ryan Lillie tossed 7.0 shutout innings with eight strikeouts to pitch Greensboro past Augusta in the team’s first game at the new SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C. The right hander worked around three hits and walked no batters in a 3-1 win for the Grasshoppers. Lillie threw 88 pitches with 62 strikes en route to the win, improving to 2-1.

JONESDEBUTSWITHPLAYEROFTHEWEEKHONORS

Thomas Jones was named the first weekly award winner for the Grasshoppers this season, winning South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors for April 30-May 6, his first week with the team. He hit .350 (7-20) with a double, four home runs, six RBI, and eight runs scored in five games with Greensboro, starting with his debut on May 2.

JONESINGFOROFFENSE

When it comes to first impressions, no Hopper has made a bigger or better one than outfielder Thomas Jones, who joined the team May 2. In his first three games with Greensboro (May 2-4), he went 2-for-4 in each game with at least one home run in all contests. In total, he hit four home runs in three games while batting .500 (6-12) with a double and six RBI. The Marlins selected Jones, now 20 years old, in the third round of the June 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Laurens (S.C.) High School.

WALKINGOFFTHESUNS

Michael Hernandez gave the Grasshoppers their first walk-off home run of the season on May 2 as part of his career day, driving in four runs in an 10-8 win over the Hagerstown Suns. Hernandez finished 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI-singles to go along with his game-winning 2-run home run off Jared Brasher with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. It was the Grasshoppers second walk-off win of the season and seventh win in the final at-bats during the 2018 season.

IT’SMILLERTIME

Brandon Miller opened his May 1 start against the Suns by retiring the first 16 batters faced, taking a perfect game one out into the sixth inning in his fifth start of the season. Hagerstown eventually caught up to Miller, chasing him from the game after 5.1 innings pitched. The right-hander took no decision that day, allowing four runs on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts in the outing.

EVERYBODYHITS

All nine batters hit safely for the first time in 2018 when Greensboro fought off Asheville, 11-7 in 10 innings, on April 29. Infielders Jose Devers and Lazaro Alonso led the 16-hit charge with three hits each as the Grasshoppers batted around in the top of the 10th for a 7-run inning. In the big frame, the team collected six hits, including four doubles, to run away from the Tourists after Asheville rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra inning.

BEGGSBAFFLESBATTERS

Dustin Beggs dominated out of the bullpen on April 27 at Asheville, striking out eight batters over 3.0 nearly-perfect innings of work. He struck out the first six batters he faced in perfect sixth and seventh innings. After inducing a groundout to open the bottom of the eighth and allowing a base hit – the lone batter to reach against him on the night – the right-hander fanned the final two batters he faced to close his outing. Greensboro fell to Asheville, 3-2.

SHARPSTINGERAGAINSTTHEGREENJACKETS: In their first series against the new-look Augusta GreenJackets, Greensboro was stung early as Malique Ziegler led off the game for Augusta with a first-pitch home run off Hoppers starting pitcher Taylor Braley. The GreenJackets hit two home runs in the opening frame, with Ryan Kirby adding a 2-run blast, en route to a 7-4 lead over the Grasshoppers.
