SOUTH AFRICAN TRIP

March 4TH – 31st 2009

Page 2: SOUTH AFRICAN TRIP

• After the British seized the Cape of Good Hope area in 1806, many of the Dutch settlers (the Boers) trekked north to establish their own republics.

• The discovery of diamonds (1867) and gold (1886) spurred wealth and immigration.

• The Boers resisted British encroachments, but were defeated in the 2nd Boer War of (1899-1902).

• The resulting Union of South Africa operated under a policy of apartheid - the separate development of the races in culture/religion and ethnicity.

• In 1994 “one man one vote” brought an end to apartheid politically and ushered in black majority rule.

Die basies taal wat gespraak is in Suid Afrika is Afrikaans en Engels. The basic language spoken in South Africa is Afrikaans

and English. Afrikaans is a young language. Dutch immigrants

to South Africa during the end of the 17th century brought the Dutch language to that part of the world. Limited contacts with the Netherlands, but far more

extensive contacts with other European languages, notably English, led to a development of a language of its own.

This new language also picked up elements from the native languages as well as from Malay (spoken by the Malayans brought there by the Dutch).

Since the end of the 19th century, Afrikaans is recognized as a language different from Dutch.

Die Onse Vader (Our Father - The Lord's prayer)

“Ons Vader wat in die hemel is,laat u Naam geheilig word;

laat u koninkryk kom;laat u wil ook op die aarde geskied,

net soos in die hemel.Gee ons vandag

ons daaglikse brood;en vergeef ons ons oortredings

soos ons ook dié vergewewat teen ons oortree;

en laat ons nie in versoeking kom niemaar verlos ons van die Bose.”

(Matteus 6:9-13. Die Bybel - Nuwe Vertaling, 1983)
