Packing Information for Your WorldStrides Capstone Program

General Information about Travel to South Africa

• If traveling where insect threats are possible, please wear long sleeves, long pants, and

insect repellant.

• Bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The sun is very powerful.

• Bring modest clothes for religious sites, depending on your itinerary.

Before Leaving the U.S. • Make copies of all important documents: passports, credit cards, insurance cards, etc,

that you may carry. In case of loss or theft, you will need to know which credit cards

to cancel.

• Keep a copy of the first page of your passport in a place separate from your passport.

Either e-mail yourself a copy or keep a copy in a separate bag from your passport.

• Pack the international phone numbers to your credit card company and bank. Note that

many 1-800 numbers will not work from abroad.

What to Wear The dress code for your trip is as follows (unless otherwise advised by your Program Leader):

• Company Business Visits: Business professional attire (closed-toe shoes, avoid heels in

factory tours)

• Lectures & Dinners: Smart casual

• Sightseeing: Comfortable shoes and touring clothing (tennis shoes are recommended)

• Religious sites: Many religious places of worship require a certain dress code (i.e., no

sandals or shorts). Please contact your Account Manager if dress codes for religious

sites are not listed on your itinerary.

Packing Tips • Pack lightly – don’t forget that you can purchase items and get clothing cleaned.

• Remember, there is limited luggage space on buses, and airlines restrict the number,

size, and weight of your bags.

• Complete and attach the brightly colored luggage tags included in your pre-trip

materials to all of your bags (including carry-on).

• Make a list of things to pack and use it as you gather your belongings.

• When packing your bags, always start with the largest, heaviest, and longest items of

clothing (typically jackets or dresses) but not pants. First, pack tailored clothing that is likely to wrinkle, and save knits and wrinkle-resistant items for the top of the bag.

• Take plenty of hand sanitizer, hand wipes, and small packets of tissues.

• Do not pack valuables in your checked luggage.

• Invest in comfortable, professional shoes that can be worn for company visits and

walking.

• Pack your own travel toiletries. Some countries or hotels may not provide toiletries, and

travelers often find comfort in using their own soaps, lotions, etc.

• Plan on wearing or packing layers; the temperature can vary greatly between cities.

• Bring a coat, umbrella, or poncho in case of rain.

• Pack according to the time of year you are going to travel. Be sure to check the

projected weather for the duration of your program.

Page 8: South Africa Program - Goizueta Business School · South Africa Program Welcome to Johannesburg & Cape Town. Johannesburg, or “Joburg” (as you’ll almost certainly come to call

promoting wrinkling. Instead, use tissue paper to cushion folds.

Business Protocol, Customs, & Culture

in South Africa

Business Etiquette in South Africa

South Africans value punctuality and tend to place an emphasis on the group rather than the individual. Although the country leans toward egalitarianism, businesspeople respect senior executives and those who have attained their position through hard work and

perseverance. Many South Africans are early risers and are in their office by 8:00 a.m.; business hours

are from 8:30 a.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There are major differences in communication styles depending upon the individual's

cultural heritage. For the most part, South Africans want to maintain harmonious working relationships and will avoid confrontations. They often use metaphors and sports analogies to demonstrate a point.

Business Dress / Attire

Suits are the expected dress code for business meetings with senior speakers. Women should wear blouses or tops with high necklines and shoes that are flats or that

have very low heels. Wear a suit for formal business meetings. For less formal meetings, men should wear a

sports coat and tie and women should wear smart, yet casual clothes. Do not wear shorts to business meetings. Slacks and a collared shirt are more

appropriate.

Greetings/Public Conduct

Handshakes are customary, both during introduction and at the time of departure. Always behave respectfully when in the presence of older individuals. Maintain eye contact when shaking hands to help build trust. Exchanging business cards is a normal practice and there is no formality involved. Be

aware that while your card will not be refused, you may not be offered one in return. South Africans typically maintain personal space and keep their distance when speaking.

Communication

South Africans are direct and often loud communicators; they are also very aware of what, how, and to whom something is being said.

South Africans of all ethnic and income groups are keen on sport. Commonly followed

sports include soccer, rugby, and cricket. It is considered rude to point your index finger at anyone or have a conversation while

keeping your hands in your pockets.

Businesswomen

Women in business continue to experience difficulty in attaining senior level positions. In some circles, women are seen as inferior to men when it comes to the business world.

Travel on foot is inadvisable and female visitors should be prepared to ask trusted contacts to accompany them to a taxi or hotel to ensure safety due to incidences of sexual assault.

Page 11: South Africa Program - Goizueta Business School · South Africa Program Welcome to Johannesburg & Cape Town. Johannesburg, or “Joburg” (as you’ll almost certainly come to call

11

Business Entertaining

Arrive on time if invited to dinner. In Johannesburg, ‘casual’ is considered dressier than in other parts of the country. Avoid

jeans or shorts. Smoking is usually accepted, but not until after the guests have finished eating. If invited to someone’s home in a more rural region, be prepared as you may not have

utensils and will be expected to eat with your hands, as is the case with many places in

Africa. Avoid eating with your left hand as it is considered unclean. Tipping is common in South Africa. Taxi drivers, waiters, bartenders, hairdressers, petrol

pump attendants, and hotel porters expect a tip of 10-15 %, or as visitors deem appropriate.

Large amounts of meat are consumed in South Africa. Vegetarians may have limited choices during meals.

Language

There are 11 official languages but English, Xhosa, Zulu, and Afrikaans are most predominant.

Most educated South Africans are multilingual and almost all business is conducted in English.

In rural areas, standards of language may differ and Afrikaans may be more common among low paid workers.

Money

The local currency is the rand (ZAR or R). Be aware that counterfeit notes are in circulation and business visitors should not take offense if notes are machine-tested at shops and restaurants.

ATMs are widely available, though visitors should take precautions against rampant ATM crime, particularly in Johannesburg. Business visitors with accounts linked to international

bank card networks such as Maestro, Cirrus, Plus, Visa, and MasterCard can draw cash directly from ATMs belonging to any of the country's principal banks.

Most major credit/debit cards, including MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Diners Club, are accepted.

Gift Giving

The practice of exchanging gifts as a part of business relations remains somewhat inconsistent. The following guidelines may help avoid complications:

Gifts are typically presented on behalf of your entire company to an entire company.

Present the gift itself to the most senior member with whom you are meeting with. Do not give a gift to anyone before you have established a personal relationship with

them. Otherwise, the gift may be perceived as a bribe. Due to policy, be aware that some individuals might have to refuse your gift. If that occurs,

simply express that you understand the situation. Avoid a gift associated with death or funeral customs including clocks, straw sandals,

handkerchiefs or anything that can be seen as a symbol of “severing” a relationship, such

as knives or scissors. Items from your country, city, or hometown are acceptable.

12

Religion

A large percentage of South Africa’s population follows the Christian faith. Several other religions, such as Judaism, Hinduism, and Islam are strongly present in the

country.
