Sourav Ganguly and his international career
As Ganguly’s form was stupendous in the domestic tournaments in 1991, he made his one day international debut against West Indies but scored only three runs in that match, later he was dropped, but after that from 1993 to 1995 he has scored heavily in domestic matches like Duleep Trophy where he scored a brilliant 171, he was again selected for the tour of England, but even in that series he played in only one match, he was not picked for first test match, later in place of Sidhu he made his debut at Lords along with another great cricketer Rahul Dravid and incidentally this test was the last for the most famous umpire Dickie Bird, in that match Ganguly scored a century and through this he got distinction as he was the only third player to make a century in debut at Lords other two players were Harry Graham and John Hampshire, though two other England players Andrew Strauss and Matt Prior has made century here but Ganguly’s 131 was the best as it was the highest on debut at Lords, in the very next match he made 136 and became the only player after Lawrence Rowe and Alvin Kallicharran to make two consecutive centuries in first two matches of his career apart from that he shared a record partnership with another legend Sachin Tendulkar, they scored 255 runs which was also highest partnership for India against any cricket playing country for any wicket outside India.
Sourav Ganguly and his recordsHe is the seventh Indian cricketer to have represented India in 100 test matches and he is fourth overall highest run scorer for India in test matches, fourth Indian to play over 400 one day internationals, he is next Sachin Tendulkar in terms of total runs scored in one day internationals and fifth in the world, he has scored 16 centuries in test matches and 22 in one day internationals, he is one among the eight players who have scored over 10,000 runs in one day internationals, he was not only the successful captain but a successful opener too, he is having the record of highest number of centuries along with Sachin Tendulkar, their partnership have brought over 7000 runs in one day matches. Ganguly is also slow right arm bowler he has taken 31 wickets in 99 test matches and over 100 wickets in one day internationals, he shares a record with Tendular and Jayasuriya that only these three players has taken 100 wickets, 100 catches and scored over 10,000 runs in one day internationals. Ganguly has lead India in 49 test matches winning 21 out of them, his average in test matches never came down less than 40 in his career, he is the top scorer till now in one day internationals by scoring 183 against Sri Lanka in the year 1999, and he shares this record with the present captain Dhoni, Ganguly till now holds the record of hitting highest number of sixes in one day internationals, first Indian to score a century against Australia in Australia, he was the only player to win man of the match in 4 consecutive matches, till now sixth player to win man of the match awards for a record 31 times, he was the second in the list to score 7 centuries in a calendar year.

Ganguly was appointed the Captain of the Indian cricket team in February, 2000.Ganguly was the Man of the Series in the New Zealand-India 5 match ODI series in November 1999. Ganguly made a mammoth 183 against Sri Lanka in World Cup 1999, which, at that time, was the Highest ODI Score by an Indian, beating Kapil Dev's Record of 175*.Ganguly was the Man of the Series in the Pepsi Cup 1999 (March-April) for scoring 278 runs and taking 6 wickets in total.Saurav Ganguly has the distinction of being one of the few players in the World to Score a century and takes 4 wickets in the same match.
