Welcome to Loughborough Town Hall and to ‘Sound Off’ – 2015.

Tonight’s show is designed to showcase the tremendous work and talent of Leicestershire’s bands and their committed and talented members. All band members are active members of Scouts and Guides, of which being in a band is only one activity, of many, within both movements. Mixing with others and making new friends is very important and plays a huge part in the physical, mental and spiritual development of us all, especially from an early age.Being a member of a band encompasses all these!

We are especially pleased to welcome both a guest Scout band from Northampton and the Thurmaston Scout & Guide reunion band, formed to commemorate the bands 80th Anniversary.

Our hope is that you all enjoy the show and take away some of the enthusiasm the band members have, and spread the word to all corners of the County and beyond.

In addition, to encourage our Scouts and Guides to join their nearest band and experience the ‘buzz’ all band members get from performing.

If you’re inspired to get involved with a band, want to book a band for an event or just require more information about bands, please get in touch with us.

Our website is www.soundoff.org.uk

Finally a huge thank you from the entire cast for your invaluable support today.

Please sit back and relax as the Scout & Guide Bands of Leicestershire ‘Sound Off’.

Please be aware that an official video is being made of the show and that official photographs are

also being taken.

As such we do not allow any flash photography or video recording

during the show from the audience.Thank you for you cooperation.

Ibstock1st Ibstock Scout Group was formed in 1928 and in 1952 a few of the scouts decided to form a band. Since then the band has been extremely successful, listed below are just a few of our achievements over the last 63 years:

• Played for her Majesty the Queen and royalty on 8 occasions.

• Runners up in the world marching band championships

• 4 time’s British Youth Band Champions.

• Various TV Appearances. • Various Major Sporting Events • Performed at the London New

Year’s Day Parade twice.

While all these things have been great achievements over the years, the main objective for the band is to support local charities and bring young people together. It’s really important that all members have fun and learn to operate in a team. All the band members fall between 10 to 25 years old and live in the Ibstock locality. The commitment needed to reach the standards required by the band means these young people are extremely dedicated…….

This year’s show is titled: The Wizard of Oz meets the Wiz

The timeless music from “The Wizard of Oz” is coupled with songs from “The Wiz” in a complete show, opening with: Ding Dong the Witch Is Dead, We’re Off to See the Wizard and The Merry Old Land of Oz…..

The band would like to thank the supporters and staff for all their support and they hope you’ll enjoy the show……

Ibstock cadetsThe 1st Ibstock Scouts Cadet Band was formed specifically to provide the initial introduction into the world of marching bands and music. We concentrate on only a few key instruments – trumpet and baratone in the brass, snare and bass drum in the percussion section to enable the youngsters to begin to understand the initial technical aspects.

Our children learn the basics of music and drill in a fun environment amongst their peer group and friends before eventually progressing into the main band with their new found skills.

Over the past few years the cadets have joined with the main band to march on several occasions including leading the Queen Scout, St Georges Day parade in Windsor and playing for the Queen on her Diamond Jubilee at Leicester Cathedral in 2012.

Our current members are playing a few simple tunes ‘ lightly row’, ‘frere Jacques’, ‘when the saints go marching in’ and ‘vindaloo’ – our arrangements are simple to allow everyone to participate in some way.

Many of our members have only recently joined the band in January and this is their first public performance ! – please clap along and enjoy our efforts.

Donisthorpe1st Donisthorpe Scout band first formed in 1945, and formed as a bugle band, and some of the members from that era still march today as Donisthorpe Reunion band.

Some years later, Donisthorpe made the jump to valved instruments, and slowly evolved into what it is today.

Our uniforms and instruments may have changed, but we have always had the same goal. We provide instruments and tuition to scouts and guides from across our district, and strive to be the best that we can be.

We are this year competing nationally as members of the British Youth Band Association, and will be appearing at many Fête’s, Gala’s and Parades throughout Leicestershire and Derbyshire.

Syston Scout & Guide Band, from the north of Leicestershire, was formed in 1908 at the very outset of Scouting and we are very proud to refer to ourselves as the ‘Oldest Scout Band in the World’!We’re also exceptionally pleased to be playing in the Loughborough Town Hall as part of the third ‘Sound Off’ and we welcome you all here today.

Syston Scout & Guide Band always have a busy schedule of engagements, from leading a village parade to being part of the London Lord Mayor’s Show, from organising our own annual ‘Sticks & Tones’ band show to being part of ‘Sound Off’, and from competing in contests against other traditional style bands to being part of the National St. George’s day parade at Windsor.

Our aim is to offer a wide and varied programme to members of Scout and Guide Groups in Syston and the many surrounding villages, and give them the opportunity to learn music and drill, and perform to audiences in a variety of venues. Which brings us to today. We very much hope you enjoy our performance of traditional marches adapted for tonight’s stage, and that you have as much fun watching it, as we have performing it.

As always, Syston can’t wait, so let’s get another show started!

Originally formed in 1935, Thurmaston reaches its 80th Anniversary in 2015!

Thurmaston is a traditional military style band and is an active member of the Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association (TYMBA). Each year the band takes part in national TYMBA marching band competitions which predominantly use military musicians as judges. The band were crowned TYMBA National Class Champions in 2013 and 2014. The only Scout & Guide band to ever have achieved such a status.

Continued recruitment is essential to secure the successful continuation of the band. Membership encompasses most of the sections across the Scout & Guide movements. New Band Trainees can be complete beginners, starting as young as 7. All follow a training programme and are taught music and the basics of banding for an hour per week for around ten months. After graduating as Junior Bandsmen they then perform alongside the Senior Band members. Tonight our latest Junior Bandsmen are performing.

The band performs at a variety of events. These include Carnivals, Ceremonial functions, the Polar Bears Association Liberation commemorations in Belgium,

the Birmingham International Tattoo, London Lord Mayors Show, fund raising and charity galas as well as supporting Scout and Guide events throughout the County and midlands.

The band has performed at the annual St George’s Day Parade and National Scout Service at Windsor Castle. This year the band has representation performing there again, as part of a drum corps.

Thank you to all our supporters and we hope everyone enjoys our performance.

This year’s Sound-Off show falls in a significant year for the 78th Leicester Scout & Guide Band as 2015 is the 80th anniversary year. it is especially apt that the Reunion Band has been formed not only to perform here at Sound-Off but to also participate in two subsequent events to celebrate this major milestone.

The band is a bugle and drum band with tuned percussion which was the original format of the Scout & Guide Band. Our performance consists of traditional bugle marches interspersed with a drum display and tuned percussion piece.

The Reunion Band started rehearsing in January and despite some apprehension from members about their own ability, everyone has made rapid progress in re-learning their own instruments as well as collectively demonstrating a determination and commitment to make the band the best it can be. Within our ranks are five married couples all of which have children who have been members of the main band at some point. One of those is performing alongside his parents today.

During coffee breaks in rehearsals old photographs have been circulated of the band in years gone by and it has been great fun in picking out faces and events that form many happy memories. During this time it has become apparent that although not all of us are still involved in Scouting & Guiding we all retain a sense of belonging to the group and the bandI hope you enjoy the show.Tim Beaver, Bandmaster.

The Traditional Youth Marching Bands Association (TYMBA)

The association aims to offer different training and development opportunities for its members and also has a competition league system which most of the membership participate. There are several contests throughout the year which contribute to the league which all culminate in the National Championships.

Away from the arena, TYMBA runs an annual Solo Musician competition where more than 100 of our young players compete across almost all instruments.

British Youth Band Association (BYBA) The Association set up rules to standardise the running of contests, judging and scoring along with the introduction of national divisions or classes. The aims of the Association are to provide a focus for the activities of the British youth band movement, and opportunities for young peoples’ personal development through performance within the marching arts. Also to promote the growth, prestige and calibre of marching bands

Oadby and Wigston Scout and Guide Band formed in 1973 as an activity at the 28th Leicester (Wigston) Scout Group. As with most Scout and Guide bands, it started life as a bugle and drum band, before gradually changing to the chromatic instrumentation you see tonight. Guides were admitted to the band in 1985 and further changes came in the 1990’s when it became the district band of South East Leicester. The Band has taken part in competitions, reaching a peak in 1998 when the band attained Championship Class standard. The band also performs at a variety of engagements from local carnivals, to the Olympic Torch event in 2012 and ceremonial functions such as Remembrance Sunday.

Tonight performance will take you on a journey from the 50’s right up to the present day. We pay tribute to many amazing films and our traditional background of marches with ‘The Greatest War Themes’, featuring such classics as The River Kwai March (Colonel Bogey), The Longest Day, The Dambusters March, The White Cliffs of Dover and A Bridge Too Far. We then move forward in time to the 1970’s and a piece “Old Blue Eyes”

Frank Sinatra recorded, ‘New York, New York’. Finally we reach the present day and Pharrell Williams’ song, ‘Happy’, from the soundtrack of Despicable Me 2.

We hope you enjoy Sound Off 2015
