If you haven’t heard of Canterbury, seriously you are missing out.

These Hampshire boys are really going to be big, to prove it they are

supporting You Me At Six on their tour, amazing right? There are 5

members who formed at school, and as they all finished college they

pursued the music career. Right now I’m loving the song ‘Gloria’, it’s a

twist of You Me At Six and a hint of New Found Glory, making the end

result music to my ears. Their debut album ‘Thank You’ is free to

download off all of their web pages and is seriously a must listen. You

could say their music genre was a mixture of Rock, Indie and Pop but

overall I would say it was leaning towards the Rock side, even so

there is a song for everyone. For a debut album it is a must have for

all you Rock/Indie fans out there!

I have one of the Nokia music phones, it was a hand me down from my little brother as my old phone broke, it has alright

battery life but I wouldn't recommend it as it the touch screen requires a stylus unless you have tiny girl fingers.

IF YOU COULD TOUR WITH ANY BAND EVER WHO WOULD IT BE

Too many to just pick one, a few on the current wish list would be: Jimmy Eat World, The Killers, Brand New,

Kings of Leon? We love a lot of bands and lot of different types of music but I reckon those 4 bands would suite

our music as much as being amazing to watch each night!

I've yet to find a song that I can listen to non stop and not eventually get tired of it. The most played song on my

iTunes is The Racing Rats by Editors.

I'd put it towards a new cymbal or drum sticks for next month.

INTERVIEW

Welsh band The Blackout formed in 2003, and if you ask me they

have really become something amazing. They first started their career

off by supporting Lostprophets on their tour and went on to finally

release their debut album in 2007. To date they have recorded two

studio albums, but the third one is coming out next year guys!

Favourite song… well that would have to be ‘I don’t care (this is why

we can’t have nice things)’ as even though it’s one of their softer

songs it has a really good tune (for want of a better word). You may

also have heard of Sean Smith who is one of the two who do the

vocals, as he is probably the best known member of the band.

Personally I cant wait for the third album as they keep getting better.

I’m Dave and i sing and play electronics in this band called Oh! the drama. we’ve been around for about 7 months now

and our sound is blend of sounds taken from influences such as, owl city, new found glory, forever the sickest kids and

hellogoodbye. We call it... Partycore!

We haven’t played many shows up and down the country but our favourite place was Nottingham. Hopefully we will be

For Christmas i would like... some Arizona tea and a new pair of shoes. thats all i desire. il be getting my family gifts,

OH THE DRAMA!

Now then The Famous Class, originally from London this pop/punk quartet are set to make it big.

Already they have played alongside the likes of Young Guns and The King Blues in 2010, so the way

this band is heading means by this time next year everyone will be singing along to the songs. The

vocal harmonies produced by vocalists Justin and Stoo really are something special. I have to say

‘Emily’ is my favourite song with a similar sound to All Time Low, the song talks about not becoming

like the other liars, thieves etc. Listening to the lyrics they have a meaning behind them, which

outlines society today. Seriously though take a listen it really is worth it, they will be making it big in

the future I’m guaranteeing it right now.

WHAT'S THE ORIGIN OF THAT NAME? HAVE YOU CHANGED THE BAND'S NAME BEFORE?

The Famous Class came from a chat between Ben and Joe (the first two members of the band) over the phone. We

wanted something catchy, something that would really represent what we felt like. We wanted it to be a name with

multiple meanings and that’s what we came up with. We also didn’t spend much time on the name, but it’s been The

Famous Class ever since and always will be!

WHAT GENRE OF MUSIC DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR WORK TO BE? WHO ARE YOUR MAJOR INFLUENCES?

Well we’re a pop-punk band, more pop than punk I’d like to think. We’ve been in love with pop-punk from such an

early age and have always listened to Blink182, NFG, Sum41 etc, so it made perfect sense to write songs like that. But

we’re also influenced by other bands like TBS, Brand New, Finch!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU ALL KNOWN EACH OTHER? HOW DID YOU MEET?

I’ve known Joe from a previous band, and Stoo and Justin have been friends for a while in the London nightclub scene.

Strangely I met Stoo when looking for a guitarist online, and we happened to live in the same small town in London!

Clicked instantly, never looked back and then Justin joined months later. The Famous Class is all about the members,

and without the four of us it’d be rubbish!!

WHEN DID YOU FORM YOUR BAND? WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO MAKE MUSIC TOGETHER?

The band started about a year and a half ago, inspired by all the bands we’ve loved over the years. It’s not easy to write

songs if you don’t believe in them at all. Whenever we write we do it as a team an get the best ideas that way.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE AND LEAST FAVOURITE VENUES?

Favourite venue is probably the O2 Islington, we play there a lot. It’s a great place and we’ve been lucky enough to play

there with some quality bands, like Wheatus for example! Least favourite, well you’d have to pay me more to find that

out! I guess it’s a good show if people turn up and have a great time!

WHICH SONGS DO YOU PERFORM MOST FREQUENTLY?

Whereever we go people wanna hear ‘Emily’ but we’ve had a pretty consistent set now for about a year, only really

adding to it when we write a killer song. All the tracks from our ‘Make or Break’ EP get played and we throw in some

cheeky covers too! My favourite covers are ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ by Rick Astley and ‘Kids’ by MGMT.

WHO WRITES YOUR SONGS? WHAT ARE THE MAIN THEMES OR TOPICS FOR MOST OF YOUR SONGS? DO YOU THINK

THESE TOPICS WILL CHANGE OVER TIME?

We tend to write as a unit, that’s how we get the best of the ideas. We’re all friends and comfortable, so that makes it

easier! The main topics are general things like girls, drinking, life, love. It’s never too intense. Saying that I can see a

song about God and one about poverty coming out now haha! We’ll probably change the topics when we run out of

ideas, but until then we’re happy with what we’ve got!

COULD YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE THE MUSIC-MAKING PROCESS?

Making music is like trying to squeeze blood from an orange. It takes so long to get something we’re all happy with and

know people will love! But it tends to start with a catchy chorus and we base everything around that vocal.

WHAT ARE YOUR REHEARSALS GENERALLY LIKE? DO YOU HAVE A SET TIME EACH WEEK IN WHICH YOU PRACTICE OR

ARE REHEARSALS MORE SPONTANEOUS?

We rehearse a lot now yeah. But we also play a fair few shows, so we’re constantly playing. It’s all we really want to do

in life, so we have to be the best and that’s hard work in itself. Rehearsals are normally dominated by whatever shows

we have that week.

WHAT/WHERE IS YOUR HOMETOWN? DO THE PEOPLE BACK AT HOME SUPPORT YOU?

Our hometown is a split between London and Essex. Joe and Justin are North London boys, me and Stoo are Essex

boys! Our friends back home have always supported us and were the first people to watch our gigs and listen to our

stupidly cheap demos. I feel sorry for them in that way, but I’m glad they stuck around and will always be grateful for

that!

WHAT ARE YOUR HOPES FOR THE NEAR FUTURE?

To play as many shows as possible, meet as many fans as possible and make some people somewhere happy!! Also, a

record deal would be nice after all the hard work we’ve put in!

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO THE UK BEFORE?

We’re forever in the UK sadly, until holiday season!

WHICH CITY ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING?

My personal favourite is Bristol. Why? Because they seem to like cheese as much as I do!

WHO ARE YOUR IDOLS AND WHY?

Blink182 are massive idols. As are any of the underdogs that have made it into the big time and defied all the odds.

We’re proud of those people!

I saw these two at 3oh!3 in September and knew then that I

had to do something on them! If you have seen them

before you will know that this and is two guys who do a dj

set and mix dub step versions of the likes of the blackout

and bring me the horizon. They come on stage wearing

mask and are pretty scary but immediately have the crowd

going and by the end we are just one big ball of sweaty

students!

TOP ALBUMS SIENCE AND FAITH – THE SCRIPT *****

If you’re in one of those moods, or you are driving your car with the windows wide open on a dusty American road this

album is for you. The scripts have been away for some time now and have just brought out their second album. This is

personally one of my albums of 2010. They are not a band I have seen live but their music ability to write amazing

heart skipping records is UN doubtable.

Science & Faith is the second album from Irish band The Script. The album was released in Ireland on September 10,

2010 following the release of the first single "For the First Time" on September 3, 2010. The albums theme is based

around the current economic and social climate in Ireland . The album debuted at #1 on the UK Albums Chart reaching

silver sales in the first week released with sales of 70,816 copies.

HARMONY – NEVER SHOUT NEVER *****

Ingle began making music as NeverShoutNever! in September 2007. His first exposure came through the internet,

where he achieved success on MySpace before issuing The Yippee EP on July 29, 2008. On July 30, 2008, he was

featured on TRL, where he performed his single "Bigcitydreams." He toured with Hellogoodbye and Ace Enders in the

fall of 2008

Harmony is the second studio album by Never Shout Never. It is the first full-length release by the artist and was

released August 24, 2010. The packaging of the CD comes with flower seeds (while the limited edition bundle also

includes a flower pot with the album name on it ) with planting instructions "so you can get involved and make the

world a more beautiful place!" The album was streamed on his MySpace on August 22, 2010. Harmony debuted at #14

on the U.S. Billboard Top 200 albums chart.

From the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, like many acts,

the guys were simply high-school friends who began playing

music together in the early 2000s . Ten Second Epic made

appearances on the 2004 and 2005 Warped Tour which

gained the attention of Black Box Recordings. This band is a

key provider for catchy upbeat sound, riffs and melodies, in

their songs such as ‘Every Day’ and ‘Welcome to wherever

you are’ both from their new album ‘Hometown’ which is a

well good album both the band and the album deserve a 4/5

The Second Epic have a great music future ahead of them.

What's the origin of that name?

Ten second epic was a name we came up with as pretty young kids, we thought it sounded cool and it stuck. essentially it means to

live each moment of your life to the fullest, and treat every ten seconds as...well...epicWhat genre of music do you consider your

work to be?

defining our music is difficult because we dont like to limit our possibilities. its just honest music with pop elements in with a solid

rock base.Who are your major influences?

we listen to a lot of music anywhere from country to heavy metal, and everything in between. if i had to choose a couple major

influences they would probably involve the Goo Goo Dolls, Foo FIghters, Taking Back Sunday, and Cartel just to name a few.

When did you form your band?

Our band was formed 8 years ago almost to the day.

What inspired you to make music together?

we were in high school at the time and really needed a way to release some pent up energy and creativity, we were all involved in

musical projects separately and it just seemed like the right thing to do.

You’ve had the present record out in Canada for a while now, does it get had playing the same songs repeatedly?

Yes actually, we've been playing these songs for almost 2 years now and it does get a little tiresome, especially since we're always

writing new material that we wish we could share with our fans. the one redeeming thing about playing the songs that fans do

know is that they get to sing along and really get into them, that makes every dull moment disappear.

Who writes your songs?

we all write together, music and lyrics.

What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?

we try to write about things we know, and we try to be as honest as possible. we write a lot about girls, drinking, being in a band,

growing up, travelling pretty much whatever is on our mind.

Do you think these topics will change over time?

absolutely! due to the true nature of our lyrics, we figure they will change with whatever is happening in our lives as we write them.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

typically song ideas start with guitar ideas. then we jam full band until we have some structured parts (verses chorus etc) ussualy

once we feel pretty comfortable with the arrangement, we'll write lyrics based on the melodies that Andrew, our singer, has been

jamming with us during the

musical process

What are your rehearsals generally like?

pretty simple, we get together play music shoot the shit and drink beers, i think thats pretty normal for bands right?

Our biggest challenge is just convincing ourselves and others that every sacrifice we have to make is worth it. a lot of people

don’t believe that bands are worthwhile and it takes some effort changing their minds. we've made most of our decisions in life

based on the band and it's meant a lot of sacrifice of friendships, intimate relationships and jobs.

We have overcome these obstacles obviously because we are still around, and it was so worth it. it's not too difficult when

you're surrounded by other people in the band who have the exact same mentality as you, it makes the sacrifices seem less

drastic and more meaningful.

What's your ultimate goal for your band?

i don’t know world domination?

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Surround yourself with people who are as dedicated as you are, and practice lots. together as a band and individually on your

own.

How can fans-to-be gain access to your music?

we have myspace and facebook and twitter. youtube is a good source for streaming music too. oh and itunes...the good old legal

way.

We all really like London such a history rich city and huge too. We did a lot of sightseeing there and it was pretty fascinating.

We’re kind of nerdy like that when it comes to new places.

If you guys were to describe yourself in simple word choice.. what would you say?

Awesome dudes having a good time.

Do you guys have any other hobbies besides, obviously, making music?

we skateboard, play hockey, which is obviously huge in Canada. some of us golf in the summer, we snowboard...pretty normal

stuff.

What's your most embarrassing experience?

We were playing a small town just south of our hometown here in Canada and in the middle of our second song, my drum stool

slipped off the back of the drum riser and i fell probably 6 feet to the stage. the whole band stopped to see what the hell i was

doing only to watch me try to climb back on this riser, it was pretty bad.

Any last words?

Hello this Berkfinger, half of Philadelphia Grand Jury. I sing and play guitar.

What's the origin of that name?

We stole it from the Fiery Furnaces. Stealing is a good way to get ideas for free and most people never even notice.

What genre of music do you consider your work to be? Who are your major influences?

That's the toughest question. We like groovy old fashioned rock and roll with a punk, DIY spirit and that's what we try to play. I

guess the sound of the songs that you may have heard is us trying to be Elvis Costello and The Sonics and Talking Heads and TV

On The Radio. Of course that is impossible and I guess that's where we become our own thing.

When did you form your band? What inspired you to make music together?

Under my grandparent's house in the first studio we build together out of old building scraps. They were very supportive and we

will never forget that. I think in a way all of our ghetto studio setups we have created since are our biggest influence. Just getting

to play together in a tiny room and record the spontaneous things that come out is usually what gets the creative ball rolling.

You’ve had the present record out in Australia for a while now, does it get had playing the same songs repeatedly?

Not really. There have been new crowds and accents to work out. We have reworked some tracks a little and as we are on to our

5th drummer we have always had a freshness in the rhythm section. Also we drop a new track in there every now and then.

Who writes your songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs? Do you think these topics will change over

time?

I usually write the words if that's what you mean. The songs used to about being alone and being poor and wondering if that

was ever going to change. A lot of the tracks were written in quite a naive way as we never thought the whole world would be

hearing them at shows and on TV and on the radio. Luckily we are not really rich so far so I think the songs will still come from a

desperate place. When you play in a completely independent band that refuses to do business with the overpaid, tasteless,

insecure people that run the record industry you often have to take the hard road. In some ways I think the tracks we are writing

at the moment reflect that, as well as being alone and poor.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

I kind of already did. We always make our own recordings and the recording process usually shapes the way a track ends up. We

never write more than a couple of chords or words before we start laying a song down to tape. New songs often revolve around

some new sound or instrument or bit of gear that we have got our hands on. The new record we are making in our London

studio is going to be a lot more exploratory sound-wise, while hopefully still holding onto the punk energy that we started this

band with.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more

spontaneous?

Rehearsals suck, so does sound check. When you play 150-200 shows a year there isn't much point!

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Fighting the industry to do things our own way. We overcame this in Australia through hard work and persistence. We drove the

van, slept on floors and ran everything for several years while working day jobs for food and rent money. We are going to apply

the same principle to the rest of the world - we pride ourselves on going to every town and playing as hard as we can every

What's your ultimate goal for your band?

Just to survive and make something with all of our creative energy. Our goal has always been to make ourselves a small, self-

sufficient band all over the world. To get to travel and make music that we are proud of is the ultimate reward for us.

What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Make good things and don't compromise. Don't become something you hate because some out of date arsehole tells you that

you have to. Music should always be fun and from the heart.

Could you briefly describe the music-making process?

I kind of already did. We always make our own recordings and the recording process usually shapes the way a track ends

up. We never write more than a couple of chords or words before we start laying a song down to tape. New songs often

revolve around some new sound or instrument or bit of gear that we have got our hands on. The new record we are

making in our London studio is going to be a lot more exploratory sound-wise, while hopefully still holding onto the

punk energy that we started this band with.

What are your rehearsals generally like? Do you have a set time each week in which you practice or are rehearsals more

spontaneous?

Rehearsals suck, so does sound check. When you play 150-200 shows a year there isn't much point!

What has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Fighting the industry to do things our own way. We overcame this in Australia through hard work and persistence. We

drove the van, slept on floors and ran everything for several years while working day jobs for food and rent money. We

are going to apply the same principle to the rest of the world - we pride ourselves on going to every town and playing as

hard as we can every night.

Philadelphia Grand Jury is an Australian duo from Sydney, New South Wales

that formed in 2008. Signed to the ‘Too Pure’ label in London, this bands

sound is indie punk and they even have some soulful music. They are full of

raw energy on their albums and on tour which is winning fans everywhere

they go. There album Recorded by band lead and producer Berkfinger (who

has also worked on records for Wolfmother, The Temper Trap, Art vs Science

and others) you can honestly imagine how optimist these albums will be in

overall music and lyrics. Id overall give this band and albums 3/5

It occurred to me when Thom, our editor, told me the deadline for my next column that I wasn’t even sure the

direction in which I wanted this piece to go. I didn’t have any particular focus for my little segment on the magazine,

and it left me a little stumped to say the least. As a result of this I began to question what I should be writing about

every month, and it hit me that I didn’t want to stick to one set theme; I’m no good at that. So each month I’ll be

bringing you articles and reviews that will most likely be completely unrelated to the previous column. I knew I

wasn’t so disorganised for a reason; go figure!

This month I found my inspiration whilst browsing last.fm (www.last.fm). For those who are unfamiliar with the

website it is a social networking site based purely on finding other users with similar, or in some cases the same, taste

in music as yourself. The website was also recently featured on The Gadget Show for its recent increase in members

which in turn boosted numbers even further.

The site is renowned for featuring a ‘scrobbling’ device which you download to your own laptop or computer. ‘The

Scrobbler’ takes note of everything you play on your own personal music player such as itunes and spotify, and then

collates them on your last.fm profile page to show what tracks and artists you’re listening to the most. These lists of

your most played artists can be compared to your friend’s own profiles.

The web site also has information on artists and even events pages where you can find other users going to the same

gigs as you or even to just find out where your favourite bands are going to be playing in the near future. Another

handy feature is that thanks to the scrobbling device, you are recommended new bands and artists who are similar to

those already being played in your library – a very easy way to find new music.

So, while I was looking at my own most played list I realised that my music library didn’t really fit a particular genre of

music. Scrolling through it became apparent that my taste in music didn’t fit a particular trend; it’s rather hard to find

any kind of correlation between Ne-yo and Metallica…

With this in mind, I began to explore my friend’s most played artists and found that there frequently appeared to be a

wide variety in genres. This, I was not expecting. It wasn’t long ago that I came across a group on last.fm named

‘Bipolar music taste’. The title itself caught my eye as you can imagine purely because many of us recognise being

Bipolar as a disorder, a form of manic depression, naturally it struck me as peculiar. However, upon clicking on said

group it was revealed that its members all had one thing in common – ‘For all those whose taste in music has vastly

contrasting artists.’

Now, with having over six thousand members of last.fm already connected to the group I found myself wondering if it

was okay to assume that everyone is a little ‘bipolar’ in terms of their choice of music. I know I for one would never

have described myself like this, I just thought it was called having an eclectic taste. The group is surely too big now to

simply be a small category of the last.fm population – it doesn’t account for the rest of the world who don’t have an

account who might also have a wide range of genres in their music collection! It appears that branching out is now a

lot more common and popular now than it was five or so years ago where our choice in music still defined how we

dressed and almost who we were as people. From personal experience, tastes in music often defined who you’d be

around during your secondary school years, or rather, who you hung around with defined what music you would then

listen to. Music created sub-cultures, or was it the other way around? Either way, now you may notice that the lines

between these groups of people are blurring.

Collaborations between artists themselves are evidence of this, with the most recent being B.O.B and Hayley Williams

of Paramore fame working together on ‘Airplanes’ that has been one of the most played songs these past few months.

Although it was an unlikely combination, the contrast appeared to be appealing. Other artists recently collaborating

include Taio Cruz working on the latest McFly album due for release later this year; another seemingly unlikely pair to

work together.

It appears now that perhaps having a ‘bipolar’ music taste will become the next trendy thing to possess, because now

that artists themselves are showing no reluctance to adjust how and who they work with, the majority of music lovers

will surely follow suit.

too (love to play fabric in London but we're not their usual sort)

The band is looking forward to having our demo out this year "Somewhere from nowhere" and then just

generally building up a fan base and following, also plans of starting a production run on merch and cd's -

Then Next year loads more shows then.. who knows ;]
