SOUND ANALYSISBy Monae Minors-Gibbs

Page 2: Sound analysis

Sound

• The purpose of sound is to set a mood/atmosphere:

• Romantic

• Thrilling

• Sad

• Heroic/triumphful

• Emphasis reality

Page 3: Sound analysis

The task

• The task was to “just use screen grabs and analyse as

much as the sound as you can in the hunger games clip

(girl on fire interview)”.

• I attached the clip below

http://youtu.be/S2sXXG3tTaI

Page 4: Sound analysis

Diegetic sound

• Sounds that characters can hear e.g. the applause

The

audience

and

character

can hear the

sound of the

applause

The dialogue

the presenter

(Caesar

Flickerman)

is heard

Page 5: Sound analysis

Volume control

• The control of how quiet or how load sounds are

• This is to set or emphasize mood (atmosphere)

• When character does not here the first question

The applause

got louder when

the camera gets

closer to the

audience

Sound bridge

Annotations Screen grabs

• Before Katniss comes on the stage

• presenter is speaking whilst the

camera goes on Katniss

• Caesar Flickerman says

“someone's a little nervous”

• the camera cuts on katniss and the

audience

• The audience is cheering

• camera cuts onto Katniss

Where sound (diegetic or non-diegestic) continues across one or more

cuts/transitions

Part of continuity editing

Page 7: Sound analysis

Foley

• Foley is tricks used to create naturalistic sound effects

• Recording sound by a different object

Foley artist for

the sound of

Katniss’s dress

on fire

Page 8: Sound analysis

Sound effect & Foley

• Sound added to visuals in the editing

• Sound perspective- sound recording that helps us place a sound as

either near or distant

Foley

artist/sound

effect

(naturalistic

sound) for when

Katniss twirls

around.

Sound

perspective

, when the

cut is close

up on the

dress the

sound is

louder

Editing

• Shot reverse shot (continuity)

• Eye-line match (continuity)

• Pace

• Blur (special effects)

I decided to include some editing keywords to show what I

learnt from editing.

Page 10: Sound analysis

Shot reverse shot

• Shot goes from shot A, shot B, shot A, shot B etc

• Continuously back and fourth

Shot of the presenter and Katniss

Page 11: Sound analysis

Eye line match

• When the character is looking off screen, and the cut shows what they

are looking at.

Katniss looks off, then the next cut

was who she was looking at

Page 12: Sound analysis

Pace

• If its to keep the audience calm/still (slow pace)

• Make the audience comfortable/normal (medium)

• Intense/exciting (fast) – allot of cuts involved

•These were fast

pace as it included a

lot of cuts

•Exciting energy

Page 13: Sound analysis

Blur

• To show un-clarity/fuzzy memory

Slight blur of

the

presenter to

show

Katniss is

not focused

She’s

overwhelmed

nervous so it

seems a blur

at that

moment
