The WriTing’s on The Wall

By Joyce D. Wegner

It is nearing the end of a glorious summer day as I slip behind the wheel of my convertible on my way to interview Barry and Sylvia Conduit, owners of Ambridgefeld Estate — one of the most exclusive properties in the Okanagan. With the top down and the cool, lake breeze offering a welcome respite from the lingering heat of the setting sun, I navigate the city’s urban sprawl until I reach the turnoff where the road unfurls before me like a shiny, silver ribbon that wraps around the shores of Okanagan Lake.

a aptly named lakeshore road and located in the southeast sector of the city, this is canada’s version of l.a.’s famed Mulholland drive. this swanky neighbourhood encompasses beaches, wineries, and parks with a collection of residences inhabited by celebrities as well as people of influence, including famous politicians and athletes, who have created some of the most prestigious and largest country-size estates in the valley. residents along this picturesque route are treated to daily commutes that have resplendent vineyard views or stunning lake vistas framed by stands of towering pines and punctuated with ornate, gated driveways that hide spectacular properties that are barely visible from the street. i follow a gleaming white cadillac escalade with tinted windows until it suddenly disappears into a hidden driveway that is discreetly marked by an oak barrel of overflowing petunias. I turn off the main thoroughfare and steer through the twists and turns along the side streets in the protected canyon of bertram creek. eventually, i arrive at end of a quiet cul de sac where automated gates swing open after i punch in the code and enter the 40-acre grounds of ambridgefeld estate. a herd of mule deer is feeding in the abandoned apple orchard just beyond the gates. alerted by my car’s arrival, the deer twitch their black-tipped tails and scatter into granite rock outcroppings and disappear into the surrounding forest. the gravel driveway ascends pass ponderosa pines, bluebunch wheatgrass, and native balsamroot still in early summer blossom, their bright, golden petals providing a sunny presence in the fading light of the desert landscape. built into the top of the hillside, the exquisite architecture of the home rises before me as i pass a sentry of canadian maples that ends at the entrance of the crescent- shaped driveway. a prism of light catches the glass geometric panels towering above the stone exterior. the stunning atrium is visible beside the mahogany front door. there is no doorbell, yet barry knows i passed through the gates minutes ago. i glance through the atrium window as he appears from the shadows on the upper floor and down the stairs to greet me in the foyer. “hello,” barry says with a smile. “you found us.” I follow him up the stairs, into the open-floor concept where there is a grand piano sharing ample space with a formal dining area, a stunning living room and the expansive culinary kitchen where sylvia is preparing coffee. “this is absolutely beautiful,” i gush as i take in the panoramic views visible through every window, including the patio adjacent to the kitchen table where we take our seats. “Well, we enjoy it here,” barry admits, while sylvia serves the coffee.” Married for 45 years, the couple is comfortably understated in their own luxury. barry, a transplant from great britain, arrived in canada in 1958. “i was a young wallpaper designer back then,” barry recalls. “i was eager to embrace the cosmopolitan life after training in london.” he met Sylvia at his first job in Toronto. When he decided to freelance, Sylvia, also a designer, joined him. they’ve been working together ever since.

“We were quite cheeky back then,” explains barry. “We were fairly well known for our design collections. and our associate was well-known for marketing.” after several years of freelancing, barry became the VP of sunworthy, a respected wallpaper manufacturer in north america. “so, we said to sunworthy, you manufacture our collections for us and we’ll take care of the distribution. The first collection took off. Bordeaux Country became one of sunworthy’s best sellers.” barry says proudly. the team then expanded to other manufacturers. “then, we did the same with imperial, and, all of a sudden, we were international,” barry recounts. “We were picked up as far as new Zealand, great britain, and throughout europe.” barry concedes that wallpaper was a standard element in interior design during the 1960s and for the next few decades. “For years, it was stocked in all the major department stores,” he recalls. “our line of borders, especially For Men Only featuring fish, geese, golf, and stuff like that, was very

popular.” and then, they had what barry’s refers to as a lucky accident. “it was about the time that Prince charles was dating a young kindergarten teacher named diana spencer and rumours abounded about her becoming the future lady diana. We decided to name our next collection, lady di. Well, the timing couldn’t have been better as the line hit the market just in time for the wedding. it was a huge seller.” “Who knew that wallpaper could be so profitable?” I ask. Barry is thoughtful. “It’s certainly not the same now. Many, many, of the most renowned manufacturers have folded and sold their inventory; everything is gone — rollers, patterns, and equipment — to countries like Korea, asia, and russia.” although retired, barry and sylvia did have the forethought to hang onto their vast collection of antique pattern books, some dating back to the 1860s. When they built ambridgefeld estate, they included a large fireproof vault to store the precious patterns. As I flip through the fragile pages in their living room, I can immediately appreciate the value of this inventory.

“these are individually hand-painted,” barry says as he points out a detailed, paisley pattern created specifically for manufacturing cashmere shawls prevalent throughout europe in the 1800s and still fashionable in parts of the world today. “What are you going to do with all of these gorgeous samples?” i ask, as i note that their 7,400 square foot home has hardly a trace of wallpaper. sylvia laughs. “We never had wallpaper in our homes.” their years of collective designing kept them so busy creating new patterns that they rarely had time to install any. “We didn’t want to have to keep updating our décor,” sylvia explains. “but with computer technology today,” barry continues, “we can scan any of these samples, put them into an art program, digitally enhance them, create custom colours for example, and print them on paper or fabric. it’s quite exciting.”

they have already created a few pieces of art using this method that are displayed in the main living area. “We’ve been asked to sell the estate completely furnished,” says barry. “but we’re taking our artwork with us.” “it’s hard to believe you are voluntarily leaving all of this,” i say as barry gives me a tour of the grounds. “Well, we moved here in 1995.” barry explains. “When we arrived in Kelowna from toronto in the 1980s, we fell in love with the area. We pulled into a gas station, asked the attendant where we could find a real-estate agent and bought 95 acres near here three days later. When we decided to build, we sold that parcel and purchased here. We truly enjoyed the process of building. We were involved in every facet.” they lived in the original home on the estate while their dream home was being built. “We watched the progress day by day,” barry remembers. “it was a great experience for us.” since they retired, they’ve realize that the word wallpaper has evolved into a new meaning. “now, it’s a design element for your computer screen,” barry says with a sigh. “there are few custom collections for interior design and with the advanced presses, it’s much easier to mass produce.” We pause at the pond where barry and sylvia enjoy watching their natural residents at play. “one summer evening, sylvia and i sat with a glass of wine and watched two brown bears frolicking in the pond.” barry says with a grin. “they were splashing and dunking each other like a couple of kids.” in the distance, we can see the vineyards of Mission hill and Quails’ gate wineries to the west, and to the north, okanagan bridge is a faint arch above the water. the soft breeze tugs gently on the needles from the surrounding pines, creating a melodic swish, a calming background for our conversation. as we continue to the patio, we pass the koi pond where a waterfall murmurs and a large frog stretches lazily on its back in bronze effigy. I watch a covey of quail scurry through the nearby brush, chasing insects for dinner while a pair of ground squirrels peek shyly from the wild roses that surround the patio. “i can imagine that this would be a perfect hideaway for world weary traveller or a James bond super spy seeking anonymity,” i suggest as we drink in the view. “don’t give anyone any ideas,” barry responds too quickly, a glimpse of intrigue in his eye. “actually,” he says with a chuckle, “when we moved here, we wanted space, privacy, security, and, of course, an exceptional living space. and yet, the experience we enjoyed the most is creating all of this. because that’s in essence who we are —artists.” he gestures toward the acreage that rolls undisturbed for as far as the eye can see. “We border on protected crown land and we love the seclusion of this setting. but we’re anxious to go and create a new home in salt spring island. We’ve recently purchased 17 acres in Fulford harbour and we can’t wait to start over.” barry leads me back to the driveway where sylvia arrives to say good bye. the deer have returned to the orchard in greater numbers, nibbling on the bunch grass as i inch pass them. the gates swing silently open, in my rear-view mirror, the magnificent house has already disappeared from view. ambridgefeld estate remains a hidden treasure of tranquility amid the hilltops waiting for a new owner. A retired 007 perhaps?

the cottage of all Cottagesa master of industrial design adds

remarkable properties to the rich fabric of cottage country. | By Joyce d. wegner

ike many residents of British Columbia’s popular cottage

country, tim mascarenhas was introduced to the extraordinary

beauty of the shuswap by someone who knew the area. “my

wife’s family has a summer home here,” he explains. “so when

we came for a visit, i instantly fell in love with it.”

tim earned his master of science in industrial design at Brunel university in london, england. He came to Calgary to complete his undergrad in urban studies at the university of Calgary. “We came to the shuswap for a family vacation and were out on the boat one day,” he remembers. “We saw this private beach and decided to dock there for a picnic. my wife loved the look of the property. i was impressed by the western orientation of the site. few homes along the shoreline face directly west. We watched the sunset over Blind Bay and it was spectacular. there was a real estate sign nailed to one of the trees, so i made the call from my cell phone and within weeks, we were drawing up architectural plans.” that was two years ago. since then, tim and his wife, tricia Peloquin, have been building three homes within the Blind Bay area. two are side by side on the site they discovered from their boat, and a larger acreage with expansive lake views is a short drive away along eagle Bay road. “i bought myself the best job in the shuswap,” tim declares with a smile. “Not everyone is fortunate enough to work in this kind of environment every day.” as i stand on the shoreline of the pair of homes he and tricia have almost completed, it’s easy to agree with him. i spent every summer vacationing in the shuswap during my childhood. the long, leafy drive that hugs the nearly 1,600 kilometres (1,000 miles) of shoreline of shuswap lake was my dad’s self-pro-claimed decompression chamber. our family of seven would squeeze into our olive-green, 1971 oldsmobile Vista Cruiser station wagon with decorative wood paneling. the littlest (me and my younger brother) faced backward on the jumpseat, jostling with our dog, who loved to hang his head out the back window, and slobber all over us. my dad would pump up the volume on the eight-track stereo as marty rob-bins blared through the speakers while he cruised along the two-lane country road hauling a 27-foot trailer. the sleepy town of salmon arm came alive during the sum-mer. a steady caravan of camping trailers arrived on the roadways, turning into a myriad of recreation spots that punctuated the shoreline.

time has only appreciated the shuswap lifestyle. Now, a thriving year-round destination, the municipality has evolved into a population of 17,000 full-time residents who enjoy the services of a rCmP detachment, fully-equipped firehall, and an acute care surgical hospital. graduating high-school students also have a local campus of okanagan College for continued studies. With all its advancement, the core of the community remains the same as it was over forty years ago. Proprietorships are common in the business centre with mom-and-pop operations that have endured generations, such as askew’s general store. there’s the Pink Cherry Coffee shop, and Bond Boutique, the Blue Canoe Bakery and Café, or the falling Waters day spa and salon. and, as tim shares his two-year odyssey of building these stunning contemporary homes, i’m reminded that, in essence, the shuswap resembles a patchwork quilt of memories that are lovingly sewn together by the dreams of those who live and vacation here. tim’s contribution began with inspiration to create two comparable homes, side by side, with very different themes. “We wanted to integrate and preserve the natural surroundings, so our first home has a birch theme – the Birch House,” he says. the open-rise staircase in the 3,500-square-foot home provides guests an immediate view through the grand living area that features wall-to-wall windows of the unique western view of Blind Bay. With tiny led lights tucked into every riser, dusk transforms the staircase from function into an artistic illumination of interior design. using her design expertise, tim’s wife, tricia, derived the colour palette from the bark of the birch tree. in the master bath, the spacious steam shower has a mosaic of birch-tree inlays that create an experience of showering in the trees, while in the kitchen, the cabinets feature the dark and light tones of natural heartwood birch that stretch in matching patterns from cabinet to cabinet – a definite artistic focal point on the main floor. dividing the eating area and the living area is a wood-burning fireplace placed on a large piece of granite that tim salvaged from the

21

building site. “We wanted to bring an element of the outdoors into the living space,” he explains. His talent and attention to detail are visible throughout each home, from his design of the fireplaces, to his modifications to how light fixtures are mounted, and the intrigu-ing use of marine grade, steel cables with turnbuckles that support the banisters of the staircases. as the Birch House is a statement in natural tones of taupe, chocolate browns, and golden birch paneling with linear fixtures that reflect the statuesque birch, the next door neighbour counterpart is a study in blues, with softer angles, rounded fixtures, bamboo flooring and warm african mahogany cabinetry — the Wa-ter House. the dining-room chandelier is modelled on a sea urchin throwing shadows of rippling water onto the walls in the twilight hours. an iconic george Nelson bubble light floats in the kitchen and the master bath features water-tumbled pebbles wrapped around the Bain ultra tub that overlooks the lake. Both homes are tucked into a stand of healthy pines, cedar, fir and birch that provides shade and wind protection. tim worked diligently to ensure the land was preserved in its natural state, even creating landscape berms in the shape of dry riverbeds that allow for minimum maintenance. a rock pathway leads to the shoreline where each home has a floating wharf anchored and pow-ered by the sun. “the wharf automatically lights up at dusk so it can be easily be spotted from your boat,” tim says. from the shoreline, the homes are barely visible, but the view of Blind Bay is extraordinary from the many outdoor patios. as we return to the main floor deck, i can hear the gentle lapping of the waves as they break across the shore, while the pines sway gently in the breeze. i watch the shadows from the trees play with the sun’s rays over the lake where boats bob past in an informal regatta that stretches from shore to shore. “Would you like to see the third house?” tim asks. i follow his truck from the large driveways of the two homes and up the gravel road to return to Blind Bay’s major

thoroughfare, eagle Bay road. i leave my windows down and breathe in the cool, clean air, which sparks memories from long ago. the next turn, i smell someone’s barbecue. “Chicken,” i say to myself. my stomach rumbles. Purple asters and white daisies are in full bloom, like a brilliant crinoline of colour jauntily peeping from the edge of the forest. i turn up the driveway to tim’s third property. also, very modern in design, tim’s intelligent use of space is reflected on every floor of this outstanding property. Built high above street level, the multi-level home offers lake views on every floor. the home also has a focus on natural elements, with an expansive fir-front door, bamboo cabinetry and a three-sided open courtyard on the main level. tim takes me on a tour noting that each level offers the homeowners and guests a comfortable blend of privacy with shared living space. Bathrooms, laundry facilities and outdoor patios are repeated on main and second floors to ease the guest experience. there is even an elevator that tim built to easily transport wood from the ground level to the large outdoor deck on the top floor. it is apparent that tim’s eye for detail continues in his third and last home. “it’s been a very busy couple of years,” he admits as he gently places the baby seat that holds his six-month-old son, Jackson, on the bamboo floor in the main foyer. “Now, that we’ve fin-ished these three homes, we’re finally thinking of building our own.” i wave good-bye to tim and baby Jackson. Back on eagle Bay road, i begin the 20-minute drive to return to salmon arm. i pass a Cape Cod style cottage with a hand-painted shingle swing-ing from the branches of an ancient willow, “as good as it gets,” it proclaims. i smile in agreement. each property i pass along this winding road is another unique patch in the summer quilt that blan-kets the shuswap, enhancing its colourful character. tim’s remark-able designs have added another dimension to the rich fabric of shuswap’s cottage country.

T he okanagan, with its mountain parks and abundant blue lakes, has always been a prime location for recreational properties. Most travelers turning off the coquilhalla connector usually take the Kelowna/West Kelowna exit that leads to the commercial, residential and tourism heart of the okanagan. however, for those adventurous few who choose to turn right at the end of Highway 97C find themselves in a charming and wonderful town named Peachland, b.c. the pastoral community of Peachland – a farming community that celebrated its 100th anniversary last year – is an altogether different story from the hustle and bustle of Kelowna. boasting perhaps the longest and most attractive beachfront promenade in the okanagan, Peachland is effectively divided into “lakeside” neighbourhoods to the east and “mountainside” neighbourhoods to the west. here, a small population and strict bylaws have preserved the area’s community feel and attractive wilderness areas. and here, like the maturing vines that have made the area canada’s hottest new wine country, the okanagan’s recreational property and hotel culture is coming of age. trepanier Manor is a new 5-satr hotel and residential development that offers just 20 homeowners the prestige and luxury that no other development can. trepanier Manor is a 10-hectare property perched atop tabletop Mountain and offering 180-degree views of okanagan lake. the property will boast 20 homes on spacious estate-sized lots and a 5-star small luxury hotel. the 44-suite hotel, with 20 separate residences, combines old World charm with new World luxury (think english country cottages with high ceilings, deep Kohler tubs and high-pressure shower heads), and manages to do so with a relatively small footprint. the brainchild of scott Wilshaw, a british hotelier who ran the emerson resort in the catskills and the Judges country house hotel in yorkshire, trepanier was designed by architect John sproule as the antithesis of the monster homes (and monster resorts) that sadly have wound their way into the local vernacular. the centerpiece of trepanier Manor will be the privately owned luxury hotel designed in classic european country style, but with a full suite of amenities and services that take advantage of the okanagan lifestyle. “our vision is to create a truly world-class travel experience here, combined with a great real estate opportunity,” says Wilshaw. the hotel will be surrounded by 10 acres of terraced vineyards and offer guests a Serenity Wine Spa with indoor/outdoor treatment rooms, full fitness and yoga centre, conference and banquet facilities, cookery school, gourmet restaurants, piano bar and more. 20 similarly styled private residences in a variety of sizes and footprints will support the hotel. currently 10 lots and homes are still available and priced from $895,000. at trepanier Manor the architectural vision is a modern, north american take on the english country cottage – offering residences that are cozily retro, but spacious-feeling, light-filled and open to the surrounding environment. the site is laid out in the style of an english village – a very high-end english village in a Mediterranean climate. it begins with a gatehouse that will include a wine and antique shop, and extends to the central residential area designed in “village green” style, where nine homes will be

built around a cascading two-level pool and adjacent to a tennis court and croquet area. as the site descends toward the lake, clusters of homes in twos and threes follow the undulating road, culminating in the hotel and vineyard, built into the ridge. With four floor plans to choose from all homes can also be custom designed by our tommie award winning builder, cardan enterprises. the show home, modeled after the Falcon floor plan, displays many exquisite features and design details, and comes complete with a 500-square-foot guest cottage. Zanzibar antique elm flooring contrasts with wainscoting details at the entrance, while extensive glazing and 14-foot open-beam ceilings

offer light and space. nods to the outdoor lifestyle of the area are seen in features such as the outdoor courtyards with open-range grills off the more traditional english-style kitchen (complete with an aga-evocative bertazzoni stove, and grey brick detailing) and showers in the terraced garden area. While the 1,600-square-foot Falcon home is a surprisingly spacious-feeling delight, the romantic choice would be the adjoining 500-square-foot “guest cottage.” With its nod to the small is beautiful aesthetic, it wins the charm award hands down against any home nearby. 15 of the 20

homes will have the option of adding a charming guest cottage to the property, great for visiting friends and family. homeowners will automatically be enrolled in a private residence club with its prestige concierge service that will set up winery tours, offer discounts to nearby golf courses, and organize a variety of special event. homeowners will be allowed to utilize the hotel to its maximum potential partaking in regular spa treatments, cookery classes, wine making classes, and dinners in the comfort of their own home prepared by a world class chef. trepanier Manor offers homeowners a great return on investment through the hotel’s management program. Unlike other vacation developments, only a select few homes will have the chance to be placed in the hotel’s rental pool offering those homeowner’s a great investment opportunity. Few places in british columbia compare to the majestic beauty of the okanagan. no place compares to trepanier Manor.

I n some regions of the country, hardy native species (e.g., V. labrusca) produced peculiar, but drinkable wines.

eventually, the introduction of american hybrids and crosses such as niagara, duchess and catawba improved the

quality of wines, but it still fell short of european standards. not much would change for several decades as Prohibition,

government regulations and virtual monopolies left canadian wine quality in limbo.

in the mid-1970s, harry McWatters, founder of sumac ridge estate Winery in bc’s okanagan Valley, and the founders of inniskillin Wines in ontario shook up the industry. they obtained licences to produce and sell wine and, by doing so, they created opportunities for others. around the same time, experiments with techniques to grow tender V. vinifera varieties such as chardonnay and riesling were proving successful. Many farmers and orchardists converted to grape production. Unfortunately, the venture would be short-lived for many. the signing of the canada/Usa Free trade agreement in 1988, together with a ruling under the general agreement on tariffs and trade meant that canada had to abandon tariff protection for the wine industry. some growers accepted government compensation to rip out their vines following the 1988 harvest while others decided to persevere. as vast quantities of rela-

tively inexpensive products flooded in, the remaining, dogged Canadian winemakers chose to differentiate their product. With some support from the federal and provincial governments, many re-planted with the classic grape varieties such as chardonnay, riesling, sauvignon blanc, Pinot noir and cabernet sauvignon. to assure consumers of quality, industry leaders in ontario established the Vintners Quality alliance in 1988. the bc VQa system was established in 1990. all wines bearing the designa-tion VQa meet strict standards.the primary set of standards relates to the quality of the grapes. the juice at harvest must contain a certain minimum natural sugar content; there are limits on the levels of chaptalization (the practice of adding sugar during fermentation); winemakers are prohibited from adding water at any stage in production, and the addition of sweet reserve wine is controlled. to meet these standards, great care is required in the vineyard. (Perfect weather doesn’t hurt either.)the VQa program also ensures that labels accurately represent the province, region, vineyard and estate of origin so consumers can be assured of quality. this

is an important distinction. in british columbia, truckloads of bulk wine are imported from california, bottled, then labelled rather vaguely as “cellared in bc” these wines cannot be labelled as VQa. ontario and british columbia are the only two provinces producing wines that meet VQa standards; however, pockets of production exist in more easterly microclimates. in Quebec, there are more than 30 small wineries tucked into the warmest regions near lakes and in protected valleys growing mainly non-vinifera grapes. in nova scotia’s annapolis Val-ley, there are approximately 325 acres in French hybrids with a small amount of chardonnay and Pinot noir. VQA wines have generated enthusiasm for domestic wines, contributed to a flourishing tourism industry and earned a place for canadian wines on the world stage. VQA Grows Good WineWhen european settlers arrived in canada in the 1800s and tried to grow the wine grape varieties from

their homelands, the Vitis vinifera plants often succumbed to disease and cold winters.

Summer Sippers

it was the wine style of focus at the recent Vancouver Playhouse international Wine Festival. this fun and versatile wine can be enjoyed with a variety of foods and its pretty, pink, summer complexion will brighten the patio or dinner table. Many are now made in a much drier style than what we have come to expect. They now show an elegance and finesse that makes them worthy of a second try.

With warmer weather and longer days, good friends and family gather in the garden, on the patio and around the barbecue. i have selected wines that retail for $20 or less and hope you will be tickled pink by some of these super value, unpretentious summer sippers.
