An old potter lived in the woods. One day a ridercame to the potter´s, because he wanted to go toPrague for business but he had got lost. The pottertook care of him and his horse. He gave him fried eggs.They talked and the potter told him about hisproblems and pots cracking in the kiln. The pottershowed him the shards. The rider knew that the causewas silver. The rider took the shards to Prague. Hecame back with his brother. They bought the cottagefrom the potter. When they broke the kiln in thecottage, they found silver. They founded a mine andnext to the mine they built the church in the place ofSt. John the Baptist. They started to live there and inthis way Jihlava came to life.
Ein alter Töpfer wohnte im Wald. Eines Tages kam einKaufmann ins Töpfers Haus, weil er nach Prag reiten wollte.Er hatte sich aber verirrt. Der Töpfer kümmerte sich um ihnund sein Pferd. Der Töpfer briet ihm Eier im Schmalz . Sieunterhielten sich und der Töpfer erzählte ihm von seinenProblemen und von Töpfen, die im Ofen bersten. Er zeigteihm Scherben davon. Der Kaufmann wusste, dass dieUrsache Silber ist. Er nahm Scherben nach Prag. Er kam mitseinem Bruder zurück. Sie kauften das Haus des Töpfers. Alssie den Ofen in der Hütte zerschlagen, fanden sie Silber. Sieerrichteten ein Bauwerk und neben dem Bauwerk bautensie das Johanneskirchlein. Dort begannen sie zu leben undauf diese Weise kam Iglau zum Leben.

Jihlava is the oldest mining town in the CzechRepublic. It was founded in the 13th century.Silver was mined in the area. It was used tomake silver coins. In the Middle Ages it wasmostly inhabited by Germans.

Following the silver mining anetwork of underground corridorscame into existence. It is 50 000square metres large and 25kilometres long. The corridors gointo the depth of 2-14 metres. In the2nd world war it was used as a cover.

Jihlava has had a long industrial tradition since the19th century. Today it is mainly represented asfollows: automotive industry, engineering,furnishings, food, glassblowing, woodmanufacturing. The biggest company is BoschDiesel. There are 4,500 workers. They producepumps for diesel motor.
Jihlava hat eine lange industrielle Tradition seit dem 19.Jahrhundert. Heute sind vor allem diese Industriezweigevertreten: Automobilindustrie, Maschinenbau,Möbelindustrie, Lebensmittelindustrie, Glasindustrie,Holzproduktion. Das größte Unternehmen ist BoschDiesel, wo 4500 Menschen beschäftigt sind. Hierproduziert man Pumpen für Dieselmotoren.
