From the Committee Greetings to all and a very warm welcome to our new club members! The 2017-18 club year is drawing to an end and the committee would like to sincerely thank all the staff members, coaches and volunteers for their efforts in making it a very successful year. We would also like to thank our major sponsors, City of Joondalup, Sports Surfaces and Tennis Only and also a host of minor sponsors for their valuable contributions to the club.

Club Renovations 2018 The club renovations which are being funded by the City of Joondalup are proceeding on schedule and should be completed well before our Club Open Day on Saturday 13 October 2018. Thank you to all

members, staff and visitors for putting up with the inconveniences and for your patience and cooperation with the tradesmen while the renovations are taking place. The renovations will greatly enhance the appearance and function of our club and their completion will be celebrated at our Open Day with the Mayor, Albert Jacob officiating.

Calendar of Events 2018-19 Annual General Meeting The Sorrento Tennis Club AGM was held at the clubhouse at 5.30 pm on Saturday 27 July 2018 following social tennis. A new committee was elected but we still have vacancies for the positions of President and Vice President- please consider applying for these positions.

Open Day Please note that on Open Day, all are welcome to play free of charge so please bring your family and

friends along for a great day of tennis. Play will start at 1 pm with a tea break at 3 pm that will include speeches and the official opening of the new tennis year. The end of play at 5 pm will be followed by snacks and a Happy Hour at the bar. See you there.

2018 Mixed Doubles Spring Tournament Following the great success of the 2017 Mixed Doubles Spring Tournament held in August last year, another will be scheduled when the club renovations are completed. You will be advised as soon as possible of the proposed date so please think about organising a partner for this upcoming fun event.

2018 Club Dinner The annual club dinner was held at the Joondalup ECU restaurant in May 2018. The event was sold out and all diners enjoyed the quality of the food and service. Thanks to Anna Thrumble, and participants who made it a great success.

2018 Quiz Night A date for our annual Quiz Night will be organised as soon as the renovations are complete. This will most likely take place during September or October 2018 so please think about asking your family and friends to form a table.

Club Website Please note that we will be upgrading our club website over the next couple of months. The existing website will no longer be available when the new site is launched- members will be advised of the new details soon.

2018 COJ Junior Hardcourt Tournament Our club would like to thank the City of Joondalup for the generous $2,500 sponsorship awarded for the junior state tournament that was successfully run in the April school holidays from 14-17 April 2018. Many thanks to all volunteers, staff members and other sponsors for their contributions and to all those inconvenienced by the unavailability of courts for social or practice. The tournament was a great experience for our aspiring juniors and very successful in raising much needed funds for our club.

2018 Club Championships Congratulations to all our Club Championship participants and winners. Congratulations in particular to our Women’s Club Champion Levena Ling, our Men’s Club Champion Michael Faulkner. Our Junior Girl’s Champion Paris Henson and our Junior Boy’s Champion Max Hamblin.

Pennant News 2017-18 Summer Pennant Results Congratulations to all the winning teams and other participants in the 2018 Summer Pennant Season. Congratulations in particular to the following teams for winning their pennant finals. Adult Teams: Saturday Ladies Div. 5 & Thursday Night Ladies Div. 8 Junior Teams: Orange Ball Div. 3, Div. 4, & Div. 8 (Jorgensen), Girls’ 14 Div. 5 & Boys’ 16 Div. 6

2018 Winter Pennants Our teams are also doing well in the Winter Competitions. Twelve out of the 16 adult teams are in the top 4 positions and 4 of the 8 junior teams are in the top 4 positions. Good luck to all the players for the remaining matches.

All players should note that nominations for the 2018-2019 Summer Pennants will be due by the end of August 2018 and forms will be available soon.

From the Coach It’s been a busy 3 months on the juniors & coaching side of things, despite the weather keeping us on the sidelines a fair bit! The coaching team has had a few slight changes, with Ashleigh leaving us to travel for 6 months, Ben just returning from a Europe adventure, and Levena taking on more lessons. Term 3 classes are now underway, as is our preparation for the upcoming summer season- which really isn’t too far off!

Winter Pennants There is 1 match remaining in the home/away fixtures, and we have 3 teams looking likely to play finals Green ball mixed divi 1- currently 1st

Boys 12 div 4- currently 3rd

Summer nominations open August 13, and we are hoping to field 20 teams as we did last year.

July Holiday Tournaments There were 3 tournaments for juniors, and we had several Sorrento juniors playing, gaining some

In the July school holidays Instyle Tennis held 2 exciting holiday tennis clinics. Players experienced tennis instruction, gameplay, multi-sport, tournament/competition day, Sorrento’s got talent, Fancy dress day, treasure hunts, prizes, final day sausage sizzle and more! Check out the photos below. Clinics will run again in the next school holidays.

City of Joondalup Inter-School Tennis Comp- Primary Schools We are proud to announce that STC has been awarded another sports development funding grant, to go towards training & equipment for the schools involved in this year’s inter-school primary school comp. The coaches will go out to 8 schools and provide 10 sessions each, selecting & training a school team and then running the event of Fri Dec 3. A huge thanks to the City of Joondalup for their support, and it will really strengthen the connection between the club and the local primary schools. Coming Up…
