Indicating willingness tochange norms of blacklistingfirms with tainted records,which has hurt the military pro-curement most, DefenceMinister Manohar Parrikartoday said punishing culprits ismore important than imposingregulations.
Participating in a panel dis-cussion on “Make in India” atET Global Business summit, MrParrikar said instead of puttingin more regulations, mechanismwas needed to punish violatorsquickly.
“I believe that the less thegovernment is in any manufac-turing sector, the faster it willprogress,” he said, adding thatfor defence exports, mostrestrictions were being removedand it would be made even moreeasier in 2016.
The blacklisting in the past,especially during the tenure of AK Antony as Defence Ministerhad hit the procurement processbadly with many of the criticalacquisition coming to standstill.Mr Parrikar had been advocat-ing against blacklisting the firms
in a haste.The Defence Minister also
came down heavily on strin-gent laws relating to the envi-ronment saying that the strictregime was hampering manyprojects.
“Environment laws weretightened so much in the past 10years that today doing anythingis impossible,” he said. TheDefence Minister also soundedthe precautionary note whileunleashing the liberal norms inthe defence sector.
“The defence sector is like a‘doberman’, when you unleashit, you have to be very carefulthat it does not bite anyone,” hesaid.(PTI)

Three alleged ISIS sympathis-ers, who were deported from UAEfor purportedly being on a missionto carry out terror attacks in Indiaand some other countries, wereremanded to 10 days’ NIA cus-tody by a court here today.
Adnan Hussain, who hailsfrom Karnataka, MohammadFarhan from Maharashtra andSheikh Azhar Al Islam fromJammu and Kashmir, who werearrested yesterday by the NIAafter being deported from theUAE, were produced before thecourt in muffled faces amid tightsecurity.
The trio were detained by theNIA on arrival from the UAE at
the IGI airport here last night.According to sources, during
in-camera proceedings, the NIAsought custodial interrogation ofthe three accused saying theywere required to be interrogatedto unearth the entire conspiracyto carry out terror strikes.
The sources said DistrictJudge Amar Nath allowed theNIA’s plea and remanded themto its custody till February 9.
The three suspects, along withother unknown associates, wereallegedly involved in a conspiracyto identify, motivate, radicalise,recruit and train Indian citizens,located in India and abroad, forplanning and executing terrorattacks in India and other coun-tries, the sources claimed.
On September 15 last year,the UAE had deported fourIndians suspected to have linkswith ISIS (Islamic State of Iraqand Syria).
The UAE had also sent backlast year a 37-year-old womanAfsha Jabeen alias Nicky Josephwho was allegedly involved inrecruiting youths for ISIS.
In January 2015, SalmanMohiuddin of Hyderabad wasarrested when he was preparingto board a flight to Dubai onway to Syria via Turkey.
According to Indian intelli-gence agencies, around sixIndians who had joined the ISISwere reportedly killed in differ-ent incidents in Iraq and Syria.(PTI)

A college student hasallegedly received a phone callfrom Pakistan asking him tojoin ISI, police said today.
Mukesh Kumar filed a writ-ten complaint with Bhabuapolice station of Kaimur districtabout receiving a call fromPakistan over his mobile phoneluring him to join Pakistan'sintelligence agency - ISI yester-day, Superintendent of PoliceHarpreet Kaur said.
Kumar, who studies inIntermediate (Class 12th) andalso works as a part time sales-man in a cloth shop, said in hiscomplaint that initially he didnot respond to the call.
When the call came for thesecond time he responded to thecaller who offered him hand-some cash if he joined the ISI,Kumar said in his complaintfiled soon after the call.
He told police that he hadrefused the offer to the caller.
The Kaimur SP said she hadinformed the State police head-quarter at Patna about the inci-dent for further action withIntelligence Bureau and otheragencies. (PTI)
