FULLAUTOwilltendtoadjusttheISOandIRISsettingsbutkeeptheSHUTTERsettingconstant.Normallytheshuttershouldbekeptatdoubletheframerate.

FULLAUTOalsoadjustswhitebalanceautomaticallybutslowly.

FullAutoexposureinDisplay

• Noticethe“A”symbolnexttotheIRIS,ISOandShutterspeedinthedisplay.• KeepaneyeonthesesettingswheninFULLAUTOmode• IfyourISOgoesabove3200,youmayhavenoiseintheimage.Don’tconfuse3200ISOwith32000ISO!

ManualWhiteBalanceThecamerawillWhiteBalanceinFULLAUTOModebutManualWhiteBalanceispreferable.TheWHTBALbuttontogglesbetweenmanualandautowhitebalance.

Todoamanualwhitebalance,settheWHITBALswitchonthesideofthecameratoeitherAorB(youcanstoretwomanualWBsettings).

Pointthecameraatawhitecardwithlightfallingonit.PresstheWBSETbuttononthefrontofthecamera.

ThePresetSwitchiscontrolledbytheCameraMenu:CAMERAPAINT/WBPRESET.Thereareindoor/outdoorandcolortemperaturepresets.

UsingtheVariableNDfilterMovetheNDfilterknobtothehighest(darkest)preset,turntheswitchbelowtoVARIABLEandthenturntheswitchbelowthattoND.ThewheelwillthenadjusttheNDlevelvariably.

ThevariableNDisusefulifyouwanttomaintainaconsistentfstop(IRIS)invariablelightconditions.Itisasimplewaytoadjustexposurewithoutaffectingdepthoffield.

ManualShutterControlPresstheSHUTTERbuttontotogglebetweenmanualandautoshutter.Inmanual,movetheSEL/SETwheeltoadjustshutterspeed andthenpresstheSEL/SETwheeltomaintainthatspeed.

Iftheshutterspeedfallsbelowtwicetheframerate,youwillhavemotionblur.Thefastertheshutterspeedthemorestaccatothemotion.

Don’tadjustshutterunlessyouwantamotioneffect.Keepitattwicetheframerate.

PictureProfiles

PictureProfiles• PictureProfilesdeterminethelookoftheimage:theyarepresetsthatdetermineimagecontrast,coloranddynamicrange.TheyaresimilartoPictureStylesinaCanonDSLRcamera,butmorecomplex.• ThePictureProfilesmaybeOFF.Youdonothavetochooseone.However,itisrecommended.• PictureProfilesalsodeterminewhetheryouareshootinginHD(Rec.709gamut)orSLOG(HighDynamicRange).• Thereareninetochoosefrom.• ThereisabuttononthecamerathattakesyoudirectlytothePictureProfilechoices.

XAVCclipsplaybacknativelyinAdobePremiere,youdonotneedtochangethecodecorcontainer.4Kclipsareofcoursemoredifficulttoplaybackatfullresolution.

BackuptheMXFfilestoyourharddrive andthenbatchrenametheclips(seenextslide).

PleaseerasethemediafromtheSDcardsusingthecameramenuwhenyouarefinished.

BatchRenamingVideoFiles• TheFS5doesnotsupportcustomfilenames.• Thiscancreateaproblemwithduplicatedfilenamesifyoushootonmultipleoccasionswiththecamera.

• DuplicatefilenameswillcauseproblemsinAdobePremiereifyourvideofilesgooffline.

• AlwaysrenametheMXFfilesusingAdobeBridge:Tools/BatchRename.

• YoucanalsouseBridgetobatchdeletetheXMLfilesbeforebatchrenamingtheMXFfiles.

WhyHighDynamicRange?

• ShootinginHighDynamicrangesolvesonepersistentdifficultyofvideoimagingsinceit’screation:howtomaintainimagedetailintheshadowsandhighlightssimultaneously.• Althoughitcanbemorecomplicatedtoexposecorrectly,HighDynamicRangevideoisusefulforsituationsofhighcontrast.• HighDynamicrangevideouseslogorithmic sampling.Sonycallstheirversionofthis:SLog.

ExposureUsingLinearSampling

Linearsamplingdoesnotprovideenoughdetailtoreproducetheluminancerangethattheeyecanperceive.

Soitdiscardshighlightinformation.

Anyvideocamerathatcannotshootinhighdynamicrange,discardsthisinformation.

• Imagenoiseoccurswhentherearenotenoughsamplestoaccuratelyreproducethevariationsoflightandcolor.• Wegetnoiseintheshadowareasoftheimagewhenshootingbecausereproducinglowlightrequiresahighsamplingrate.• Onesolutiontoeliminatenoiseistoeliminatethisshadowareafromoursamplerange.• Pushtheimageinformationupintothelowermids andhighlightsinthehistogramwherethesamplingrateismoresufficientforagreateramountoflight.

SLOGexposure

• Keepyourpictureinformationinthemidandhighlightarea.• Youneverwanttobeinthesituationofhavingtoraiseyourshadowareasinpostproduction- thiscreatesnoise.• Youalwayswanttolowerthemids andhighlightsinpostproductionwhen“normalizing”theshot(makingthecontrastseemcorrectonacomputerdisplay).

SLOGandISOsettings

• ThehigherISO,themorethedynamicrangeisreduced.• ISO3200inSLOGgivesyouthemaximumdynamicrange.• ChangingISOtoAUTOwillcauseittochangesokeepexposureonmanualat3200ISOifpossible.

ShootingSLOG:OVEREXPOSE

YoumustoverexposeforSLOGshooting.Ideallyyouwillhavenoimportantinformationintheshadowareasofyourimage.TheeasiestwaytooverexposeproperlyistouseAutoIRISandsettheAEshiftto1.5EV.Thiswilloverexposetheimageby1.5stops.YoucannotuseFULLAUTOwhenshootingSLOG.UsemanualexposurecontrolbutAUTOIRIS.

SLOG:ZebraStripes

• IfyouwanttomanuallyexposeusingSLOGconsiderusingtheZebraStripesasareference.• SettheZebraLevelto70• Usethisareferenceforfleshtonehighlights.

SLOG:ManualExposure

• UsethehistogramwhenexposingSLOG• Pushalltheinformationintothemids andhighlightsonthehistogram.• Keepallimportantinformationabove30IRE(onethirdofthewayuponyourhistogram).• Thinkthatallyourimageinformationwillbeshiftedtowardstheshadowareaslateron.Soyoumustleavesomeroom.• Youcanoverexposeby1.5to2.5stops.• 2Stopsoverseemsideal.Darkerskintoneareaswillbeat70IRE,yourzebrastripelevel.• At3stopsofoverexposureyoulosetoomuchcolorinformation.
