Highly respected carp angler Ian Russell explains why he never goes fishing without Code Red Boilies.

I have been using Code Red for four years now and can honestly say my results seem to get better every year. Over the last decade I've tried a huge array of boilies and have even owned my own bait company, so it’s a massive statement for me to say that Code Red stands head and shoulders above any bait I have ever used.

The best thing about Code Red is how consistent it is. Over the course of the year I find myself fishing a variety of venues through my personal fishing and for

various magazine articles for Sonubaits, and it never lets me down. One day I could be fishing at Linear Fisheries trying to catch as many carp as possible from Brasenose One, the next I maybe sneaking around RK Leisure’s Horton Church Lake trying to catch one of the venue’s elusive forty pounders. For this reason it’s absolutely essential that I’m using a versatile bait range that I have complete confidence in. I meet so many anglers that constantly chop and change their bait on a regular basis because they simply don’t have

any faith in it. Fortunately, for me, as soon as I turn up at a venue armed with Code Red, I know I’m in with an excellent chance. If I don’t catch, I know it’s not the bait. The fish either aren’t feeding or I haven’t put my hookbait in the right place. It’s that simple.

I get asked daily on the bank, or via social media platforms, why I think Code Red is such a good bait and the answer is always a very simple one. I could baffle you with science, but I’d rather keep it super-simple. In a nutshell Code

Red contains a whole host of top-quality ingredients that carp absolutely love. The bait is formulated around a highly digestible fishmeal base mix that makes it a brilliant year-round bait that is equally as effective in the colder months as it is in the summer. When you crack open a bag and have a sniff, you are hit with a very distinct, meaty aroma that just screams big carp. Although there are loads of specially selected ingredients inside Code Red, there are two that really give this bait some real big-fish pedigree.

the confidence code

The first is liquid liver and the second is liver powder. I’m convinced that the combination of these two incredibly effective ingredients is what makes this bait so reliable. Not only do carp eat it quickly, but they recognise it as a nutritional food source and keep coming back for more.

When I think about Code Red, I don’t just see it as a bait that catches lots and lots of fish. I see it as a bait that solves many age-old problems anglers encounter on a regular basis. In this day and age a

boilie has also got to be a convenient option for most because we don’t all have freezer space and don’t want to be air drying, rehydrating or throwing away mouldy boilies. The great thing about Code Red is that it’s been designed from scratch, taking all the best features from freezer and shelf-life boilies. The high levels of liquid food attractors in Code Red means they have the same texture as a frozen bait, therefore allowing the attractants and food signals to release as soon as the boilies enter the

water. With the inclusion of natural preservatives such as salt, sugar and oil along with modern tasteless and odourless preservatives used in the food industry, we have created a fantastic bait that stays fresh, therefore there’s no need for freezers. They can be left in cool and dark conditions all-year round ready to be used instantly when needed.

Over the last couple of years I have yet to come across a venue where Code Red doesn’t work immediately. What’s more, since I started

using the bait four years ago, the amount of large carp I have caught has gone through the roof. I’ve fished Linear Fisheries for many years and had always struggled to single out the larger fish. This changed the year I started using Code Red and the average stamp of fish I caught increased massively. Over the last couple of years I’ve caught large fish from Manor, St Johns, Oxlease and have even managed to tempt larger specimens from Brasenose One and Two.

Code Red isn’t just effective in the UK, it works just as good abroad too. I visited a French club lake in Spring 2014 with a couple of friends of mine and was told hope for a couple of carp across the three nights I was there. As soon as I introduced Code Red the carp were on it straight away and I finished the trip with 19 carp to 43lb. I simply catapulted 20 Code Red 15mm Boilies over a Code Red Wafter on a really simple rig.

Shortly after returning from France I actually decided to head back over The Channel to Heron Lake on the ultra-pressured Abbey Lakes complex for a week. Anybody who has fished over there will know it’s not an easy prospect, but Code Red did me proud again and I ended up bagging 22 carp in total during my trip which was mainly made up of 30lb-plus carp to 48lb 10oz.

Over the last year I’ve also had considerable success on Horton Church Lakes, Kingsmead One, Wraysbury One, Swan at Bluebell Lakes and Jones Pit. All are very different lakes but have one thing in common. The carp absolutely love Code Red.

POP UPSAn excellent hookbait either fished by itself or over a bed of Code Red Boilies or Pellets.

PELLETSGreat for creating a bed of feed when spodded out and they also make an excellent addition to a PVA Bag or Method Mix.

WAFTERSWafters in the original colour are something which we have been asked for over and over again, using a wafter to counterbalance the weight of the hook is a great presentation and used over an area of scattered boilies is often a winning tactic.

HARDENED DUMBELL HOOKBAITSHardened Dumbell Hookbaits have had the ingredients adjusted to create a much more durable bait, but still retain all of the smell and flavour of the original boilie. They are perfect for when nuisance species attack a standard hookbait. Their durability allows you to fish with confidence knowing that your hookbait will take much longer to be whittled down.

SUPER CHODSSuper Chods are the perfect hookbait for chod rigs, they are designed to have increased buoyancy but it is also important that they don’t take on water and become heavier so affecting the presentation of the rig.

12mmA great bait for wary carp which are cautious of picking up a standard 15mm boilie, also make excellent baits for barbel.

18mm (pop ups included)Ideal for using in a throwing stick for fishing at range, these larger baits have proved the downfall of some seriously big carp.

Page 7: Sonubaits Magazine 2015 - The complete carp bait guide inc. specimen bait guide

On busy venues like Linear Fisheries in Oxford, most anglers turn up, cast out a PVA bag and introduce a small amount of bait over the top. This style of angling undoubtedly works, but it’s the kind of tactic I employ during the colder months when I’m trying to nick a bite in tough conditions. During the warmer months, when the weather is good and the fish are active, I want to catch lots and lots of carp. One or two bites per session simply isn’t enough!

So how do I ensure I keep the bobbins moving all-year round? Well, it’s simple, I use what I believe to be the best range of baits on the market and I’m not afraid to introduce a liberal amount at the start of every session. Lots of the anglers I come across seem a little apprehensive about spodding out a large bed of bait to begin with because they think it may hamper their chances of catching, but I think it has the completely opposite effect in most situations. Now I’m not saying you should be introducing ten kilos of bait from the off, but spodding out one or two kilos of bait if the conditions look right will certainly stand you in good stead. I’ve got

BEANIE HATA warm, comfortable and stylish knitted hat. A must-have for winter fishing.

TOWELIdeal to keep your hands clean and dry when out on the bank.

a really simple approach when it comes to bait and it’s a formula that I’ve applied successfully to a whole host of venues across the UK. Basically, if you introduce enough bait for one fish, you will probably only catch one carp. If you put out enough bait to feed half a dozen or so fish, you will create a competitive feeding situation and can potentially rack up a decent hit, especially if you introduce more bait on a little-and-often basis between takes.

The way I see it, carp travel around in groups as a rule and as soon as one greedy fish has snaffled the freebies, the others will leave the area on the hunt for more grub. If you’ve got enough grub on the deck to occupy the entire group of carp, they will stay

in the area, therefore giving you the chance to catch a large proportion of the shoal. More often than not, the spod hitting the water and extra attraction entering the swim sends the carp into a feeding frenzy and makes them much easier to catch. If you can create this situation and keep feeding the swim, you will undoubtedly catch more carp.

I’ve tried a whole host of different spod mixes over the years but the most successful contains 1kg of 2mm S-Pellet Feed, 1 kg of 4mm S-Pellet Feed, 3 tins of Hemp, 1 tin of F1 corn and 1kg of Code Red Boilies. Although some anglers opt to fish with an all-out boilie approach, I prefer to use a variety of different ingredients in the mix.

Spodding regularly keeps the swim active.

Page 8: Sonubaits Magazine 2015 - The complete carp bait guide inc. specimen bait guide

As well as making it difficult for the fish to distinguish which bait is your hookbait, the combination of ingredients release a whole host of attractive ingredients that carp find simply irresistible.

When making my spod mix I will always add a dousing of Code Red Oil. It’s rammed with attraction and I’ve generally found that half a bottle is perfect for the contents of my spod mix.

The liquid attraction in the oil releases food signals to all levels of the water column drawing fish down towards the dinner plate on the bottom.

I generally like to fish three rods on the same spot when targeting day-ticket venues. Rather than fishing three hookbaits exactly the same, I will generally fish a different combination on each rod to see which the carp are more inclined to eat. Once I’ve had

a pick up on one hookbait and I believe it’s the one the carp are most likely to snaffle, I will change the other two rods to suit. I generally start with an Oozing Pop-Up, a Code Red Boilie and a Washed-Out Code Red Wafter.

If you want to crack your local day-ticket venue and would like to catch more than any of the other anglers on the lake, don’t be afraid to introduce a bit of grub. If you start with

a couple of kilos or so and introduce more on a little-and-often basis, you will catch more carp.

Dave Magalhaes explains why floater fishing can be a devastating tactic during the warmer months.

If I could only fish for carp one way, for the rest of my life then floater fishing would probably be the method I’d choose. For as long as I can remember, it’s played a huge part in the way I’ve set about targeting carp. Not just for numbers of fish on the more heavily stocked and prolific venues, but also on the more difficult, big carp circuit waters.

The beauty with floater fishing is that it’s all visual and

therefore exciting. There’s no waiting around wondering what’s going on, as it all happens there in front of you and when you get it right, the results can be phenomenal!

The secret to being successful at floater fishing is patience. Carp are greedy by their very nature and if you can bring that out in them, you’re never going to fail. However, as I’ve just said, you need to be patient with your feeding until the fish are confidently

taking. Once this happens, they’ll all but throw caution to the wind, making them much easier to catch. It also means that there’s a good chance of multiple captures and it’s not uncommon for the carp to continue feeding after you’ve hooked and are playing a fish.

Personally, I find everything about floater fishing very stimulating. I liken it to a garden pond. When you feed the fish on the surface, you can sit and watch them for

hours as they race and fight each other for the next free offering. When you throw food in that sinks, however, the frenzy never seems to last quite as long, but also, you get bored of watching them... or maybe that’s just me! On the heavier stocked venues, I enjoy it for the sheer numbers of fish that you can catch, although it can get a little hectic at times, so you do need to be a little organised.

FLOATER FISHING DAVE MAGALHAES

Page 10: Sonubaits Magazine 2015 - The complete carp bait guide inc. specimen bait guide

Dave loves the Oozing Floaters.

If you're struggling to reach the required range, put some floaters in a PVA bag.

My real love for it though, is on the big fish venues. It’s no secret that targeting big carp is a timely and often soul destroying journey, but I’ve found that floater fishing for these big fish often cuts the time down drastically. Not only is it a massively underused tactic on such venues, but, again, by being incredibly patient with my feeding, once the fish are taking confidently, I can single out the one I want.

Gone are the days of searching through all the various dog and cat biscuits in your local supermarket, desperately looking for an edge over other anglers, then trying to work out the best way of presenting them on the surface. Many years ago, Chum Mixers were most peoples first choice, then it was supermarket’s own brand, but over time both changed and were never the same again. Fortunately, Sonubaits now do everything that you’ll ever need to go floater fishing, with a selection of floating pellets, powders and liquids to get even the most stubborn of carp feeding.

So where do we start? Undoubtedly, my favourite pellets are the Oily Floaters. There’s no messing about and they’re ready to use straight out of the bag. They already have a little oil added to them, which begins leaking off and across the surface the moment they hit the water, instantly attracting any carp in the area. They’re also a little softer in their makeup,

meaning they can be pierced with a needle or side hooked, straight out of the bag. As daft as it may sound, when you have fish greedily taking and fighting amongst themselves to grab the next freebie, the last thing you want to be doing is drilling through a hard pellet and wasting precious time. They come in three flavours, Original which is fishy, Krill and Liver, all in 11mm which is about the size mixers used to be. I don’t have a preference, but some fish on different days prefer a particular flavour, so if fishing is proving difficult I mix up the flavours and feed them together to see if the carp do have a preference on that water on that day.

The Floater Fishing Pack is something that I always have in the back of my van and is my first choice on the more heavily stocked venues. Again, it may sound daft, but if the seagulls are a problem on your lake, these floating pellets seem to fill them up a bit quicker, so would be the ones that I’d feed. Like the Oily Floaters, they too give off attraction from the moment they hit the water. They also come with a tub of Oozing Floaters in Strawberry and Fishmeal, which ooze attraction, pulling carp in to investigate. More often than not, I’d say to try and match your hookbait to your free offerings, but on the more prolific venues, it’s uncanny how often a hookbait that stands out is quickly taken by the fish. In fact, it’s often the first to go when presented

in amongst a group of freebies

Oozing Floaters are unique in every way, these floaters are perfect to use on heavily stocked venues, either on their own when casting at cruising fish at distance or even in amongst some loose fed pellets. Made with high levels of water-soluble ingredients, they quite literally ooze their smell and colour into the area around them, enticing carp to feed.

Although not in the ‘floater’ range, one of my biggest edges for a long time and something that has certainly made a difference on the more challenging venues, has been the addition of powders and oils to my pellets. The Barbel and Carp Liquid Enhancers, made up of hemp and fish oils are very good, but the Code Red Oil is a personal favourite, along with the Krill Flavour

Shaker. I put the Original Oily Floaters in a bucket; pour a good amount of Code Red Oil over the top then sprinkle in a good helping of the Flavour Shaker powder. I then put the lid on

and give them a really good shake, making sure that all the floaters are covered in the oil and powder. I normally do this the night before I plan to go fishing or before I leave to go to the lake and it is definitely

something I feel gives me an edge over other anglers, but most importantly, gets those fish into a feeding frenzy, even when they’re stubborn and not in the mood to feed.

FLOATER PACKConsists of a boosted floating fishmeal pellet in 11mm designed for feeding by hand, with a catapult or through a spod. Also contained in the pack is a tub of dumbell boilie floating hookbaits in two flavours, Fishmeal and Strawberry. These hookbaits are ultra buoyant and they have been made with high amounts of water soluble ingredients which ooze off into the water enticing carp towards the hookbait.

OOZING FLOATERS high attract, ultra buoyant dumbell shaped floating hookbaitsThese floaters have been made with increased levels of water soluble ingredients, this means that when they are in the water they ooze off their smell, colour and flavour into the water and surrounding area enticing the carp to feed. You can actually see the Oozing Floaters pumping their ingredients out into the water. There is a multitude of ways to use them, they can simply be hair rigged, tied on using a lasso, attached using a bait band or glued to the shank of a hook.

OOZING POP UPSThe next generation of pop ups, being extremely buoyant they are perfect for all presentations of pop up rigs including Zigs and Chods. The main advantage of these is they have highly water soluble ingredients so the flavour and colour leaks out over a prolonged period of time attracting carp into the swim and directly to the hookbait.

It won't be long before the rods pull

round with a fish on!

Barbel fishing has changed a lot over the years, with the introduction of new baits and the development of tackle things are constantly changing. My barbel fishing has come a long way from the early days of directly hooking meat and now consists of mainly fishing with pellets. A bag of pellets can be put back in my bag without the worry of it going mouldy! It now suits my favourite way of fishing - the Monkey!

I’ve been using the Monkey mix for a number of years now and I’m sure that it helps me catch more barbel than others. Monkey is basically a mixture of various types of pellets, the smellier the better, that are crammed into a feeder to produce a very slow release of food items, but lots of flavour. I don't really know where the name 'Monkey mix' came from, but it's stuck and now it's my go-to tactic on the rivers that I fish.

The Monkey really excels on bigger rivers such as the River

Severn, Wye and Trent. A big feeder full of pellets can make lots of disturbance when it hits the water, but on bigger rivers the pulling power of the monkey will keep the fish in the swim.

I like to use a mixture of pellets. My first choices are Cheesy Garlic Halibut Pellets, Spicy Sausage Halibut Pellets, and F1 Feed Pellets. These are all proven barbel catcher's and flavours that I have full confidence in. I'll put a third of a bag of each pellet into a Sonubaits bucket or a groundbait bowl and cover them with water. These harder pellets need a little longer to soak than low-oil coarse pellets, so I leave them for around 5 minutes, fully submersed in water before draining off the excess. After 10 minutes the pellets will have absorbed enough water to make them sticky. Once the pellets are sticky they are ready to fish with.

My rig is a simple running

feeder rig, tied using a Korum Running Rig Kit and a Korum River Feeder. A long hooklink of around 4-6ft a size 10 Korum Xpert Power hook and hair rig completes the set up.

I will cram the Monkey mix into the feeder, pushing it in reasonably hard. I’m trying to create lots of flavour in the river, without putting much feed through the swim. This way any fish coming upstream following the scent from my feeder will most likely find my hookbait first. My hookbaits are usually Pellet O's and it's a good idea to take a couple of different hookbait options. I'll always have a selection of flavours with me as you may find that the fish have a preference for a certain pellet depending on the day.

As well as Pellet O's I also take some Code Red Boilies. I’ve caught a great number of big barbel on Code Red Boilies and I’m sure that they pick out the better fish. The boilies also come in great when you have to wait longer

for bites as they stay on the hair longer. I also have a tub of mixed Pellet O hookbaits that I keep soaking in Code Red Oil. This stops the water seeping into the pellet as quickly, allowing you to leave it out for longer!

On my first two casts with the feeder I won't push the pellets in as hard. I'll let the pellets come out and travel downstream. This should pull some fish upstream if I keep the feeder going in. After the first two casts I'll push the pellets into the feeder really hard so that only the flavour can come out and very little feed will come out of the feeder. People often point out that I’ve still got pellets in my feeder when I’m playing a fish. That's a good thing!

The Monkey has produced a huge amount of barbel from rivers all over Europe for me. I’ve got complete confidence in it; and that's why it's my bait of choice for most barbel fishing situations.

If there's one man that knows about big bream

it's Dai Gribble. His list of specimen sized

bream includes fish to over 18lb. Here's how Dai targets

specimen bream...

B A G M O R E

Big bream are like hoovers! When a big shoal of bream arrive in your peg they will clear out a big bed of bait in no time. Over the years I’ve learnt that when fishing for these fish it is a good idea to introduce a lot of bait at the start of the session and regularly top up the area with more. Shoals of bream can be anything up to 50+ fish, especially on some big gravel pits, and the larger the average size, the more bait they will want to eat. The good thing about bream is that they aren't

picky. They'll eat all sorts of bait, but I’ve had one bait mix up my sleeve that I keep going back to because it keeps catching fish!

Pellets form the base of my baiting attack. This allows me to form the bulk of my feed with a relatively cost-effective bait. It just so happens that pellets are a bait that bream simply cannot get enough of ! I use a mixture of different pellets for my bream mix, using smaller sizes to keep the bream grazing along the

bottom. My top choice of pellet is 2mm Krill Feed Pellets, 2mm S-Pellet Feed and 2mm Fin Feed Pellets. These pellets all have different rate of breakdown when in the water. Releasing flavours into the swim for a very long time.

To kick off the swim I like to place a bag of each type of pellet into a large Groundbait Bowl. To this I'll add two tins of Hemp'n'Corn, a pint of red maggots and some Soft Hooker Pellets. The process of making these Soft Hooker

Pellets means that they're packed full of oils and flavours, perfect for pulling in a big shoal of bream. Mix all of these together in a large bucket and you have the perfect big bream mix.

I'll often put this entire mix into the swim just to kick off my spot, and if I’m fishing for lots of specimen sized bream, sometimes double the amount. It sounds like a large amount, but I’ve found out from experience that being underprepared and having not

enough bait in the swim could mean that the fish leave your swim much quicker.

I'll introduce my bait with a spod to make sure that I can get as much bait into the swim in the shortest amount of time. This will put a nice spread of bait in the swim, cutting down the amount of line bites. Lots of bream in a tight area can be a recipe for a sleepless night – or lots of striking into thin air!

My hookbaits are simple, I use

two grains of Korum Supa Soft Corn with a single grain of Sonubaits F1 corn in the middle. This slightly bigger hookbait is often hunted out by the bream when there are lots of smaller particles in the swim.

This simple, but effective mix is sure to help you catch more specimen bream this year as long as you remember how much bait a big b ream can eat!

they don’t take up as much space as a bucket.

OOZING BARBEL & CARP PELLETSto help barbel & carp find the baitOozing Pellets are designed to help the barbel or carp find these baits in the worst of conditions due to their intense flavour and colour combinations.

Made with high levels of soluble ingredients, including flavours and colours, once in the water you can see the flavour and colouring leaking; just what you need to make your hookbait visible in murky conditions. The oozing trail will leak off these baits for up to 24 hours, giving you full confidence that your baits are as effective as possible.

BARBEL & CARP PASTE for moulding around hookbaits to increase their immediate attractionThe paste has a soft, pliable texture which dissolves slowly for instant and sustained attraction. Designed for running water as the smell attracts fish from downstream, but is equally suited to fishing still waters. For fast flowing water, simply add a thicker layer of paste as this will introduce more smell and flavour into the swim.

CHEESY GARLIC RANGE Cheese and garlic are two of the most popular flavours for specimen fishing on rivers. We took garlic powder and a coarse grade of diced garlic and blended them with cheese powder to make the flavour; we also use garlic oil in the pellets for further attraction. This combination of flavours has been responsible for the downfall of many specimen barbel and chub.
