JAPAN

Looking for part time work? InJapan's labor intensiveindustries they are sufferingfrom a serious shortage ofpart time employees, plus amarked deterioration of thenations traditional workethic. The situation wouldnotbe such a problem if parttime workers did not accountfor such a significant shareof the nations workforce, according to the JapanChamber of Commerce. Thedilemma is particularlydifficult for Japans fastfood shops, supermarkets, convenience stores, and retaildistributions centers. The problem evidently stemsfrom a growing dislike amongemployees for long andirregular work hours and theneed to stay on the jobSaturdays, Sundays andnational holidays. Not longago, part time workers playedonly a supplemental role inJapan. Since managers find itdifficult to replace personnelwith regular staff members, now scarce in numbers, hiringof part time workers is oftenthe only answer. Such workersare paid considerably lessthan ordinary employees.Since the demand for parttime workers continue toincrease, thousands of openingexists.

THE HAPS

It was a dark and stormy night...

Just wanted to get your attention. This is Pat Solar filling in for the infamous JackMaley. Our roving reporteris away for the holidays and has askedthat Bob Kingsley and I try to fill hisshoes while he's gone. I'm not sure whatsize shoes he wears, but here goes.

There was a record attendance at ourpre-Christmas meeting of December19th. The meeting opened with TomEakin leading the pledge of allegiance.John Watson lead the invocation followed by the introduction of visitingRotarians and the many guests ofRotarians, consisting of family andfriends.

The "lightning round" of fines leviedincluded $15.00 to John Watson for hiswife's birthday, $15.00 to KathyVyenielo for her husband's birthday and$5.00 to our past District Governor JohnBlount for his tardiness.

Randy Seelye then presided over thepresentation of four very special$1000.00 donations.

Page 4: SONOMA COUNTY MAKE-UPLOCATIONS &r

The first $1000 check was presented toSonoma County's Council on Aging toassist with feeding our senior citizens atChristmas.

The next check was presented to Rev.Cross from the Redwood Gospel Mission who willuse the donation to provideChristmas Eve dinners and presents tothose in need.

Clay Brayman from the Salvation( .rmy accepted his $1000 donation and

explained that it would provide foodboxes, toys and assist in caring for theaging.

The last $1000 donation waspresented to Marsha Click of the Family Support Center which provides support for homeless families. Marsha wenton to explain that, due to the recession, there are many more middle classfamilies visiting the center than in previous years.

A second round of fines began withGary Bayless contributing $25 for his22nd Wedding Anniversary and DebraAdams paying $10 in recognition of herhusband's rather brilliant Christmassocks.

The meeting returned to PresidentArchie and the club's presentation of it's

t Christmas gift, a Sony Walkman, to ourAustralian Exchange Student LucindaThorley.

The highlight of the program featuredthe award winning vocals of the SantaRosa High School Chamber Choir singing songs of the season ranging fromtraditional Christmas carols to

American Folk songs.

President Archie then extended anopen invitation to any Rotarians wishingto volunteer any unsolicited end of theyear fines. Carol Estes made good on aprevious commitment to donate 10% ofher first month's car phone bill to herPaul Harris Fund. As Carol said, 'Talking is my business" and promptlydonated $75.00.

As the meeting was being adjourned,a "Rusty"Santa made a guest appearancehanding out small stuffed toys and candycanes to the children in the audience.

SUNRISE

CHRISTMAS PARTY

HUGE SUCCESS

Many thanks to Sue and Archie Julianfor a fun Christmas party. The star of theevening was Archie's player pianofeaturing traditional Christmas carols.Shauna Lorenzen was guest conductorwith Phil Hulen and Dan Lambert carrying some strong (I'm not sure I've usedthe right word) vocal support. BruceReyes stood his ground at the food tableand Vicki Lockner sported her best

Christmas bonnet giving the presence ofChristmas future, on was it Christmaspresent? Once again Sue and Archie, thanks for a great time.

FOCUS ON ROTARY

Some have compared Rotary to auniversity with four colleges of learningfor its members: (1) person-to-personfellowship through Club Service, (2) interest, instruction, and participation inCommunityService andwelfare; (3)ethical conduct in the interaction betweenexecutives, staff, and workers, and between buyers and sellers through Vocational Service; and (4) an all-importantthrust in this Nuclear Age, toward worldunderstanding, peace, and goodwillthrough International Service.

Whatever his or her interest andtalents may be, every member of the"Rotary University" will find ideas ... toimprove the quality of life for all - thehallmark of "Service Above Self."Rotarians who invest themselves in service also enrich their own lives.
