SONNETS SOcietal Needs aNalysis andEmerging Technologies in the public Sector

It is a fact that technology in our age is offering countless solutions that could change the way we live and interact and that innovation is lately directly linked with emerging technologies that are applied in various domains. However, despite the investments performed in the last decade the bitter truth is that “we are not there yet” when

it comes to fully exploiting the benefits of ICT to help the public sector to meet emerging societal needs.

SONNETS will tackle this issue of empowering the public sector in becoming a core innovation driver by dedicating itself to the following core questions: (a) how to identify,

Some project facts

SONNETS is a 18-month project co-funded by the European Union under the topic EURO-6-2015 Meeting new societal needs by using emerging technologies in the public sector of the H2020 work programme. For the project, a well-balanced European

consortium of four (4) partners from industry, academia and research communities was established: Atos Spain (coordinator), the National Technical University of Athens, Fraunhofer INT and Istituto Superiore Mario Boella.

We are happy to share with you the first SONNETS newsletter. Over 18 months, SONNETS will study the societal needs and the technologies that can be used by public sector to address these needs. A new issue will be

published periodically with the primary aim to inform you about the progress of the project, the results produced, the milestones attained, as well as related and interesting activities undertaken during the course of the project.

monitor and early identify societal trends that need to be met by specific public sector services? and, (b)how to timely get aware of emerging technologies and assess their usability for the public sector?

To provide convincing answers to these questions SONNETS will deliver an innovative methodological framework to accelerate the transformation of the public sector through the identification and analysis of emerging technologies that hold the potential to transform the public sector into a technology leader and innovation carrier. It also aims

to identify innovation actions that could be employed to deal with societal challenges, and address societal and public sector needs. Thus SONNETS has committed itself to the mission to foster collaboration between all relevant stakeholders by breaking down knowledge silos towards building a more productive, responsive and innovation generating public sector.

As such SONNETS is based on the following sub-concepts, which can be witnessed as a quadruple helix:

Needs Identification

Innovations Identificationand Gap Analysis

Community Buildingand Networking

Innovation Transfer

These activities will lead to the multidisciplinary development of a roadmap that will allow the public sector to grasp the role of the protagonist in a future of value added services which meet societal needs.

OUR OBJECTIVES

During its lifecycle, SONNETS aims to achieve a number of objectives envisioning to formulate the necessary recommendations for developing innovative public services and ensuring the integration research results in view of the Horizon 2020 strategy:

1. To produce complete documentation (in the form of a wiki and deliverables) on the analysis of emerging needs from the public sector and societal challenges

2. To identify emerging and state of the art technologies relevant to the public sector and identify gaps based on the needs and envisioned targets of the public sector.

3. To provide a sustainable decision support framework for public sector decision makers and ICT architects, which allows linking identified emerging trends to public sector needs.

4. To raise awareness and generate consensus among the public sector, the societal and the ICT research community, through a roadmap for the use of emerging technology by the public sector and proposing mid- and long- term activities.

5. To build a wide network of collaborators, including researchers, practitioners, experts and policy makers from diverse policy domains, and conduct a series of dissemination activities and workshops.

6. To design and develop a reference system (e.g., Wiki or similar) that will be used during and after the project.

Interested in getting

involved in SONNETS?

For the project purposes, SONNETS has engaged four experts (the Experts Group) in different policy domains, which provide concrete and practical support to project partners.Additionally, we count with the support of a team formed by external experts (the Experts

Advisory Group), which consists of people willing to contribute to the transformation of the public sector into an innovation leader. You can find more information about the Experts Advisory Group (EAG) at our project website (Experts Advisory Group).
