INSTALLATION

1. NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KONTAKT 2 OR 3

Copy the entire “SC Tube Drum” folder to anywhere you like on your hard

drive. Make sure you keep that folder structure as it is, so that the Kontakt

instruments can find their samples. (If you don’t need the EXS24 instruments

or the Kontakt 2 version etc, you can erase those respective folders… never

erase the Samples folder ).

2. EXS24

Move the included EXS24/SamplerInstruments/ SC Tube Drum folder to your

real Sampler Instruments folder, which is located here:

user/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments

Keep a copy of the included “Samples” folder somewhere on your hard

drive. This folder has all the sample data that the EXS24 instruments need,

so keep it somewhere safe.

3. ABLETON LIVE

Double click the included “Tube Drum.alp” file, and this will launch an

installer program to install Tube Drum into your Live Library.

ABOUT THE TUBE DRUM

Inspired by the Blue Man group, we

decided to build a PVC pipe thwacker

thing... a "Tube Drum" .. technically

known as a "plosive aerophone" .

Starting with a very long 20 foot (6

metre) pipe (that's a 57 Hz fundamental,

for those without

a calculator)... we thwacked, and we

sampled and we sawed... we thwacked

again, and we sawed again -- we went

back to the hardware store a few times

-- until one last little piece (6 inches / 16

cm) gave us the high C6.

This gave us the five octave completely

multi-sampled 63 note Tube Drum.

We didn't actually keep every pipe length, so we don't have a 63 note rack

of pipes to take a photo of. It would have been a bit big for the studio

anyway. We cut and re-used the same pipes, sampling as they got shorter.

This instrument uses 63 different pipes, multi-sampled and round-robined

with our usual levels of 'mustn't-hear-the-same-sample-twice' neurosis.

There are enough velocities to give it some dynamics, and it is very dynamic.

You can hit these things with your hands, but the sound is very soft that way.

To get the full BlueMan Group THWACK you need to use plastic bats, or

shoes, ping-pong paddles,

etc. We found we got the

best THWACK from a

p last ic sun-tan- lot ion

applicator.

In any case, we provide

bo th the fu l l Padd le

thwack version, and the soft Palm thwup version. The soft flesh version

might be appropriate for some applications, it has a kind of Udu-like, gentle

quality to it.

INSTRUMENTSGENERAL INFO

All 63 pipe lengths were sampled at 44.1kHz / 24 bit. Two articulations were

sampled: palm and paddle hits. Up to 10 velocity layers are used in the instruments and there are three

round robin layers for each note.

The range of the instrument is 63 keys, from A#0 to C6.

KONTAKT

Instruments : • Tube Drum Paddle

• Tube Drum Palm• Tube Drum KS (Kontakt 3 only)

THE KONTAKT FRONT PANEL - JAMMER PAGE

The first page of the front panel is the KSP Jammer, which is a performance

tool for exploring the Tube Drum in real time. It’s similar to an arpeggiator in

that notes you hold down will be played automatically, but which note will be

triggered is randomly selected from those you hold down.

The controls of the Jammer are as follows:

Jam ON enables or disables the Jammer effect. When the Jammer is ON,

all throughput of MIDI is disabled, you only hear the output of the Jammer.

Time is a drop down menu that allows you to choose the repeat speed.

This will always sync to the tempo of Kontakt or your host sequencer.

Double Hits will trigger two notes on each repetition, as if you are playing

with both hands simultaneously.

MW Vel is a depth setting that allows you to add or subtract velocity using

the Modulation Wheel. This will affect notes already held down so you can

make swells or fades while the Jammer is already rolling.

The Randomize section allows you to introduce randomicity to the notes as

they are being generated. Randomize Velocity will add or subtract a

random amount of velocity for each note, up to a maximum that you set.

This is always in relation to the last played velocity you triggered with your

keyboard or sequencer.

Randomize Note will add or subtract a random value for the MIDI note,

which can be useful especially using the zoned Instruments.

Randomize Octave will randomly add an octave or more (maximum 3) to the

generated notes. Note that Octave only introduces added octaves, not

subtractions.

Randomize Timing is best used very subtly if you want to introduce a bit of

“human error” into the timing. At higher settings it’s a bit avant-garde. If you want to record the output of the Jammer into a MIDI track, you need

to turn on “Send MIDI to outside world” in Kontakts Options page, under the

Audio Engine tab. In the “choose options” drop down, you can turn on

“script generated notes”, and Kontakt will then send Jammer’s notes out.

You then need to assign a MIDI track to record these notes as you play the

Jammer. Be careful you don’t route the generated MIDI thru your sequencer

back into Kontakt again, or you’ll get complete confusion and the universe

might turn inside out.

THE KONTAKT FRONT PANEL - TWEAK PAGE

The Tweak Page gives you quick access to a variety of Kontakt’s internal

sound shaping tools. Although we have provided very straight and clean

Instruments, you can of course quickly make something less natural using

the filters and envelopes.

If you Command-click (Ctrl-click in Windows) any knob, it will jump back to

our “default” position, which is generally the place for the most natural

sound. The control knobs provided are:

•Low Pass Filter Cutoff •Resonance •Filter EG Amount •Filter EG Attack •Filter EG Decay •Amp EG Attack •Amp EG Release •High Pass Filter

(static) •Delay Send •Pipe Send (convolution with a general pipe sample)

Tweak & Jammer MIDI control panels The two MIDI Control pages allow you to assign MIDI controllers to the

knobs of the Jammer and the Tweak Page. This is useful if you have a

hardware controller, or want to sequence changes to those parameters.

EXS24

After installing copying the SC Tube Drum folder to your Sampler

Instruments folder : ( user/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments ) when you next launch Logic, there will be two new Instruments available in

the EXS24 drop down menu :

• Tube Drum Paddle • Tube Drum Palm.

The first time you load a Tube Drum Instrument in EXS24, your Mac

may take a moment to find the waveforms it needs. After that, it will

remember the location and load much more quickly.

ABLETON LIVEAfter installing Tube Drum to your Live Library, you will find the Tube Drum

Instrument Racks in the Instrument Racks/Soniccouture folder.

The two racks are • Tube Drum Paddle • Tube Drum Palm.

There are 8 knobs giving you realtime control of The Tube Drum:

Arp and Speed controls affect an arpeggiator, which can be used to

create random patterns when you hold down a chord.

The Attack and Decay knobs affect the envelope of the resulting sound,

which can be interesting for special effects. Obviously the default position

of these is best for a natural instrument sound.

Autopan pans the instrument back and forth in sync with Live’s tempo.

The Filter type, Cutoff and Reso are useful if you want to make

the sound more synthetic or turn it into something quite different.
