Songs From The HeartVolume 1

First Easter............................................................................................................... 2More of a presentational song, this was written as an attempt to understand whatthe disciples went through that first ever Easter…

Heaven’s Gate .......................................................................................................... 6Starts quiet, builds, gets very loud at the end! A good closer.

I Will Worship (Psalm 30:1–3; 61:3,4).................................................................... 8On December 28th 1995 I managed to drive off the highway, rolling the car overin the ditch. Miraculously, my 2-year old son and pregnant wife came throughunsathed, although the same couldn't be said for me. This song was inspired byGod’s graciousness in delivering us all from a very bad situation.

If I Dwell In The Morning (Psalm 139) ................................................................ 10Some songs just write themselves, for better or worse! This started off as a shortchord progression (basically the second line) which was too nice not to use and anopen bible on the piano. It was finished a scant two hours later, and was aninstant hit at the church I attended at the time, much to my amazement (normally,if a song is finished that quickly it gets forgotten even faster…) An SATBchoir/ensemble arrangement is available for this Psalm.

Let It Be Known (Psalm 19:1–4; John 3:16; Rom. 5:1,2) ..................................... 12An up–tempo and upbeat worship song! SATB arrangement for choir/ensemble.

Love The Lord (Matt. 4:10; Deut. 6:4–5,13) ......................................................... 14A slower, meditative chorus based on some of the most fundamental teaching onworship found in the bible (but don’t take my word for it, look it up!) Consists oftwo verses, each of which is sung three times before the chorus. The basic four-bar pattern is a good one for practising vocal improvisation to.

The Call (Matt. 13:1-23) ........................................................................................ 15This started as a meditation on the passage in which Jesus is so pressed by thecrowd, He climbs into a boat to preach, as seen through the eyes of an observer onthe beach. More of a presentational song, with a laid back, breezy feel in theopening.

You Are My God (Psalm 118) ............................................................................... 18Upbeat song taken from various parts of Psalm 118. Notice the slight lyricchange in the chorus after the key change. Segues nicely into “Lord I Lift YourName On High”, if you haven’t already done that one to death… A good opener.

You Show Me (Psalm 27:4).................................................................................... 20Another up–tempo song that you can have a lot of fun with. The G–C2–D patternfrom can be repeated ad lib at the end for instrumental improvisation.

First Easter

Those were such exciting days,Filled with laughter, filled with praise.Blue skies smiled on lake shore crowds,People came from all around. How were we to comprehendThe shadow cast upon us then?Healing the sick; sight to the blind;Raising the deaf; freeing the chained;“This is my body; this wine my blood; One will betray me - soon I’ll taste death.”

The substance of our dreams wasTurned to dust that night in the garden.A cold wind tore away the hopeThat once we held so dear. The fire that burned freely in our heartsAs He was taken was crushedAnd terror filled our minds andDrove us to the night.

Songs From The Heart Vol. 1 Page 22

(First Easter cont.)

Pain-filled days; numb with grief,Our hearts were broken.Filled with fear, meeting nowBehind closed doors.Through our tears came His voice:“My peace be with you!”Overwhelmed, we beheld the risen lord!

Yes! He is alive! We have seen the Lord, He is risen!Yes! He is alive!Christ is risen from the dead, oh-oh!Yes! He is alive! We have seen the Lord, He is risen!Yes! He is alive! He is risen from the dead!He is risen from the dead!He is risen from the dead!

Heaven’s Gate

There’s a call that’s going outAcross the nations,To come into the presence of the King. There’s a call to one and all,Each generation toBring a gift of worship to the King.We will worship Him!We will worship Him!

There’s a place reserved for youWithin His kingdom;A table at the marriage of the Lamb.Soon the feast will be prepared; Each invitation willLet us come and stand before the KingDressed in robes of white!Dressed in robes of white!

Songs From The Heart Vol. 1 Page 24

(Heaven’s Gate cont.)

You must believe Him, you must receive Him.Do you know Him? Do you love Him?

And Heaven’s gate is opened wide,He’s calling you to come inside; To take your seat in theBanquet hall of the Father! And Heaven’s gate is opened wide,He’s calling you to come inside; To take your seat in theBanquet hall of the Father!

I Will Worship(Psalm 30:1-3; 61:3-4)

I will worship You my God,For You have lifted me up from the pit;And You have saved my life.Oh Lord my God, I worship You.You have been a refuge from the stormAnd my strong tower against my foes;I long to dwell foreverIn the shelter of Your wings.

You have shown me Your sovereign power,Lord, I stand here because of You.I have found in the midst of strife,Lord, Your grace is sufficient for me.Oh Your grace is sufficient for me,Yes, Your grace is sufficient for me,Yes, Your grace is sufficient for me.

I will worship You my saviour, worship only You.I will worship You my saviour, worship only You.

If I Dwell In The Morning(Psalm 139)

Oh Lord, You have searched me,You have searched me and known me.You perceive my thoughts from far away; You know all about me,You know the very thoughts I’m keeping.Oh Lord, You are with me,Laid Your hand upon me.You are with me everywhere I go;Such knowledge is too greatFor me to understand it.

If I dwell in the morning far away;Make my bed in the deepest places,Even there Your hand will guide my way.If I go to the heavens, You are there; If I dwell in the night You’re with me still; So I praise You for Your love to me.

Songs From The Heart Vol. 1 Page 27

(If I Dwell In The Morning cont.)

Oh Lord, You have made me,Put Your life within me.In the secret place You spoke my name; You know all about me,Know my days from the beginning.Oh Lord please search me,Test the thoughts I’m keeping.See if there is any wrong in me;Lead me in Your ways, that I mightHave life everlasting.

If I dwell in the morning far away;Make my bed in the deepest places,Even there Your hand will guide my way.If I go to the heavens, You are there; If I dwell in the night You’re with me still; So I praise You for Your love to me.

Let It Be Known(Psalm 19:1-4; John 3:16; Rom. 5:1-2)

The heavens declare the glory of God;The skies proclaim the work of His hands.Day after day they tell of His greatness;Night after night they let it be known!

Let it be known in all the earth,Let it be known that God is good!Let it be known in all the earth,Let it be known that God is good!

The CallMatt. 13:1–23

I stood upon the shore,Sun glinting on the water. (Oh, oh.)The lake ruffled by the breeze,That brought the cries of sea birdsTo my ears, to my ears.

A crowd began to form,I heard the latest rumour; (Oh, oh.)A new preacher come to town; Some hailed Him as a prophet,The Messiah! The Messiah!

As He started to speak a stillnessSpread over the crowd; The fishermen paused to hear Him speak. The call of the birds, the waves thatBroke upon the shoreWere the only sounds to mark thePass of time.

Songs From The Heart Vol. 1 Page 31

Words fell like drops into a pool,Sending out ripples on my mind;Eyes that were ocean deep, on fire,Held me as they looked into mine, into mine.

Such love was in His gaze,A depth of love I’d never known before; And I was torn two ways as IHeard Him calling,“Come and follow! Come and follow me!”

As I heard Him my spirit held it’s breath,I wasn’t sure; Would I stay or would I go?What of my family and friends? What would they say?Would I regret it in the course of time?

Questions that died upon my lips,Seeing His answer so complete. How could I lose, I’d only winIf I would follow to the end, to the end.

You Are My GodPsalm 118

You are my God, and I will exalt You.You are my God, and I will praise Your name.

(repeat)

Up to the horns of the altar in triumph,Join in the festal procession with joy!For the Lord God has become our deliverer;Standing together in His light we say:

Open before me the gates of His righteousness;I will give thanks to the Lord, for He saves! The Lord’s right hand has doneMighty things for us!We will not die, but will live to proclaim:

You are our God, and we will exalt You.You are our God, and we will praise Your name.

(repeat)

You Show MePsalm 27:4

You show me the way that’s right (oh–oh)You show me the way that’s pure. You lead me into the light of Your love;I never need to fear. You show me the way that’s right (oh–oh)You show me the way that’s pure. You lead me into the light of Your love;I never need to fear; I know You’re always there!

One thing have I asked of Your Lord,That thing will I seek from You:That I may dwell in Your presence, oh Lord,All the days of my life!

About David Stone:

I am actively involved in the worship ministry of The Stone Church (noconnection!), Toronto, Canada. Prior to that I was involved in music ministry atAll Saints, Thorpe Acre, UK. Due to a series of moves, my church connectionshave been highly varied, and I therefore refer to myself as anAnglipentacostamethabrethabaptist. I am a husband, father, musician andchemist. This collection of songs is the result of the encouragement and input ofmany people: my parents, who introduced me to the joys of music at a very earlyage, and set an example by offering their musical gifts back to the church throughinvolvement in different music ministries; to Mark Pullinger, who asorganist/choir director at All Saints during my time there encouraged me to play, sing, write and arrange; to Bev Moorehead, who freely gave me training inwriting and arranging; to Michael and Brigitte Krause, for being willing to take achance on me as a musician and worship leader; to my wife, for understanding, encouraging, and tolerating my instruments and computer (!); and finally to theGod and Saviour of us all, Jesus Christ, without whom there would be no music,no inspiration, and no joy.

About “Songs From The Heart”:

I’ve been writing music and songs for a long time, but it wasn’t until about 1984or 1985 that I started writing material for use as part of church worship services. This has included simple choruses, presentational songs and both arrangementsand original material for use by choirs or vocal ensembles. “Songs From TheHeart” is my attempt to make this material publicly available to the church atlarge. I hope that you enjoy these songs, and find benefit in using them; it hascertainly been a wonderful experience writing them, even though it is often hardwork. If you find this material helpful, or would like to obtain more information, please contact me at one of the addresses provided at the front of this book.Thank you!
