2 Categorized SonarWiz Enhancements – 2017 Q3

Here are the highlights of SonarWiz enhancements for 2017 Q3 (July, September, August).

Highlights Summary Table (blue items have companion graphics) Section - Functional Category Highlight Description

2.1 SonarWiz 7 General Enhancements Production-version SonarWiz 7.00.0002-7.00.0010 releases were released during Q3 Any new SonarWiz customer, or existing customer with a current EMA on their license key as of 7/1/2017, can run SonarWiz 7. Click the link below, for more information:

Introducing SonarWiz 7 !

1. Not every grid will be positive-down, so we've made your gridding easier, by allowing any grid to be inverted to match the SonarWiz processing math.

2. Sidescan and sub-bottom import being both fully 32-bit floating-point format now, we removed some of the legacy math limits where minima/maxima (thresholding) could be applied. It's not necessary anymore!

2.2 Bathymetry Enhancements 1. A new cross-section report enhances the way you can view your bathymetry data - with exacting detail of grid cross-sectional slices.

2. Support for two new bathymetry file-types was added for import and post-processing - MB-systems type FBT, and Sonardyne Solstice type SWF8.

3. Backscatter mosaic inter-file gain differences can now be manually adjusted using a per-file static gain factor, to create a perfectly homogeneous mosaic.

2.3 Single Beam features 1. Totally new discount-priced post-processing with SonarWiz is available for this special type of survey and post-processing. We support most single-beam echo-sounders for real-time and import.

2. Single beam data acquisition has a new unified stand-alone server, to record your echosounder position and depth data.

2.4 Sidescan post-processing 1. Free-span targets are now included in the adjustable-data category, so make changes then RECOMPUTE ALL to re-position them after layback and navigation changes are applied.

2. User Gain Control (UGC) has been revised per user-feedback, is easier to use, and has a new water-type

selection option, to reflect water salinity as a factor in the gain applied.

2.5 Sub-bottom post-processing 1. Swell Filter has been added to the growing list of digital filters which may be applied in batch-mode to all imported files, using "make like selected"

2. Continuing our SEG-file import customization support, we have created a new option to support user-specified navigation position in the SEGY trace headers, for special-situation SEG file import.

2.1 SonarWiz 7 - General Enhancements

Gridded data (spatially-interpolated depth, amplitude, etc) is a great way to see "surfaces" between recorded survey lines, or as a smoothed variation of your bathymetry survey depth data. Generally SonarWiz expects "positive down" type grid data, meaning a larger positive number is deeper, e.g. in a depth grid. If you generate the grid with SonarWiz, it works great! Sometimes though, you need to use a grid from a secondary source, have no control over it, and it's a negative=deeper type grid. This new feature in SonarWiz is really convenient in cases like that - just invert the grid and proceed.

Here's a depth grid with a range of 8.27 - 13.62 meters depth, presented in t he SonarWiz map view color-scaled to show RED = shallow:

You start by selecting the grid, then select INVERT GRID from the drop-menu:

The result is an inverted grid:

Q3 2017 [email protected] 650-967-2045 Page 7

Then click SCALE TO DATA in your color window and you get BLUE=SHALLOW as the grid data has been inverted. This is an easily reversed operation - so go back and forth to compare.

2.2 Bathymetry-specific Enhancements

2.2.1 New Cross-Section Report Option

Cross-section report is an incredibly detailed way to examine grid data results in a new graphic fashion. You start by creating a survey line, then select your grid and select CROSS SECTION report from the drop-menu:

Page 8: SonarWiz Quarterly Highlights - 2017 Q3€¦ · The resulting DOCX or PDF report document gives the cross-section detail: 2017_Q3_SonarWiz_Quarterly_Highlights.pdf Chesapeake Technology,

Q3 2017 [email protected] 650-967-2045 Page 8

The cross-sections will be taken at that line, and across the grid in a series of cross-sections which you specify. Each cross-section will be graphed so that you can see depth x position, for example from a depth grid, in fine detail. You specify the cross-section report in the dialog shown below, with options for inter-cross-section spacing, report title, and a report logo graphic.

The resulting DOCX or PDF report document gives the cross-section detail:

The red arrows here point to the 3 cross-section lines where the data graphics show the depth detail.

2.2.2 Static Gain Offset Option for Backscatter Mosaics

Has this ever happened to you? The entire mosaic looks great, but ONE LINE is slightly too bright, or too dark ... arggh!!!

Page 10: SonarWiz Quarterly Highlights - 2017 Q3€¦ · The resulting DOCX or PDF report document gives the cross-section detail: 2017_Q3_SonarWiz_Quarterly_Highlights.pdf Chesapeake Technology,

Q3 2017 [email protected] 650-967-2045 Page 10

It's not uncommon, what with all the automatic gain adjustments happening in sonar survey today, but we now have a way to tweak your backscatter mosaic easily to make fine-tuning adjustments like this.

You select the backscatter mosaic file to be adjusted, right-click, and select PROCESS BACKSCATTER from the drop-menu,

Page 11: SonarWiz Quarterly Highlights - 2017 Q3€¦ · The resulting DOCX or PDF report document gives the cross-section detail: 2017_Q3_SonarWiz_Quarterly_Highlights.pdf Chesapeake Technology,

Q3 2017 [email protected] 650-967-2045 Page 11

Then select STATIC GAIN OFFSET in the settings. You have numerical control and per-line resolution, and can apply the adjustment to starboard and port sides independently.

Q3 2017 [email protected] 650-967-2045 Page 12

Give this a try, next time you are doing bathymetry post-processing and your backscatter mosaic just will not adjust well any other way. You can apply changes like this to a single line, or any selected group of lines.

2.3 Single Beam-specific Enhancements

Single-beam sonar is now supported for post-processing data import and real-time data acquisition, providing you with an inexpensive bathymetry option in SonarWiz. The data imports easily, and color-scaled depth view is available in 2D or 3D:

2.3.1 Single Beam Pricing - new Q3 2017 options!

Single beam discount pricing is your newest post-processing and real-time feature enhancement in SonarWiz 7. We have re-presented fathometer options in the GUI, which were always a real-time acquisition option when you had ANY other sonar real-time interface. Now it's available solo though, without requiring any sonar real-time purchase, and it's at a deep discount price. Here are the details:

2.3.2 Single Beam Stand-alone Real-Time Server

What you used to do in SonarWiz 5 and 6 with a FATHOMETER recording specification dialog, you now control using the new Single Beam Server interface, show below:

2.4 Sidescan-specific Enhancements

User Gain Control (UGC) has a really cool new control option - adjustment factored by salinity - in the form of your PSU (practical salinity units) setting. You can apply UGC -> AutoTVG and have the adjustment factors derive automatically based on PSU in a range of values from 15 PSU (brackish water, mouth of a river) to a highly saline water (e.g. 40 PSU, Dead Sea), or just use the default value of 35.0 PSU.

The UGC adjustment numbers get calculated / adjusted for you automatically based on the PSU setting. Just select the PSU level then click AutoTVG:

and a high-saline setting example:

The UGC effects are subtly different, but noticeable, as the TVG curve and formulae R values gets adjusted for salinity.

2.5 Sub-bottom-specific Enhancements

Swell filter is a great way to smooth out seafloor heave, especially if you have not had the option of using an MRU to capture real heave and compensate for it. Now in SonarWiz, you can take advantage of a single line of swell-filter setting, and batch-process to apply that setting across all other SB lines in your project. This really saves time!

You select File Manager -> Make Like Selected, select the example line, then apply that same setting across any other set of lines:
