Food for Thought
Jim Spinale has called my attention to another great book from
Dynamic Catholic, “Building Better Families” A Practical Guide
to Raising Amazing Children. This book is written in an easy to
understand style. It possesses great food for thought. Please pick
up a copy at St. Ann while supplies last.
Peace,
Fr. Brian

Looking for a Catholic Elementary School? St. Catherine of Genoa School located at 192 Summer Street, Somerville has educated students for over 90 years. Our motto, “Christ-Community-Commitment” captures the spirit of Saint Cath-erine’s. The dedicated administrative faculty and staff create a learning environment in which students develop necessary skills for a responsible Christian citizenship which will hopefully im-pact their lives. Our school is an accredited member of the NEASC. We were listed as a Bright Spot in education by the Catholic School Foundation. Scholarships are available for students in Kindergarten through grade eight. To assist our working families, we offer an After School Pro-gram and a Free Before School Program (7:30 A.M.) We are presently accepting applications for our preschool
(Age3) through sixth grade. We have a wait list for our seventh and eighth grade. If you would like to tour the building and receive and admission pack-age please contact Marian Burns, Principal or Michelle Gavidia, Adm. Assistant at 617-666-9116

Peace Garden
Each year Paul and Susan Kelley generously donate the beauti-ful flowers for the planters as well as for the Peace Garden named in honor of their beloved daughter Gretchen. Gretchen was a young woman who loved to promote Peace. Her memory lives on through the kindness of her parents who share God’s beauty with us in the summer months with the flower that adorn our parish (St. Catherine) grounds, offering us some peace. May Gretchen be granted eternal life.
Visits to the Sick
Fr. Richard was able to visit Frank Centrellea, Sr. who is reha-bilitating at Sancta Maria in Cambridge. Fr. Richard brought him Communion and administered the Sacrament of the Sick for Frank’s healing. Please keep Frank as well as Pat & Frank, his son, in your prayers. Last week I visited Gary Ober who is in rehabilitation at Spaulding in Charlestown. Gary received communion with his mother, Georgina and his sister Linda. Gary is recovering. Please keep Gary and his family in your prayers. George Sweet is recovering. He was scheduled to leave the Woburn Nursing Center, Rehabilitation Division this past Mon-day. Carol, his wife, was with him when we visited. George is gaining more strength each day. Please keep them in your prayers too.
THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JULY 1, 2018
The Wilderness
The Hebrew people were protected by God, calling them out
into the wilderness for 40 years, escaping the wrath of Pharaoh.
The Hebrews discovered their special relationship in God’s
love during their time in the wilderness.
After John the Baptist baptized Jesus, Jesus went to the desert
for 40 days and 40 nights to listen to God and to deal with
temptations from Satan. Of course, Jesus was victorious over
Satan.
In life we are often in the wilderness. For example, we are in
the wilderness of grief when we lose someone we love; we are
in the wilderness of fear when the doctor says that this looks
serious; we are in the wilderness of outrage when someone we
have trusted betrays us. Remembering that our baptism places
us in a special relationship with Jesus while cultivating our
communal and personal prayer lives, we will discover God’s
love in the wilderness life the Hebrews and especially as Jesus
did. The wilderness draws us into God’s love when we remain
mindful of our Baptism.
May God bless you and may we take some time to reflect upon
the power and meaning of our Baptism.
Peace,
Fr. Brian
Saint Vincent DePaul Society
Thank you for your continued generosity to St Vincent DePaul
with your monetary donations and collection of food staples.
Many people in our parishes benefit on account of your thought-
ful giving. Please remember that you may bring food staples to
the parish on the third Sunday of each month. Of course, you
may bring goods anytime during the month. May God bless
you!
Holy Mother of the Good Shepherd, turn your motherly care to
our Archdiocese of Boston. Intercede for us to the Lord of the
Harvest to send more laborers to the harvest. Inspire vocations
in our time. Let the word of your Son be made flesh anew in the
lives of persons anxious to proclaim the Good News of everlast-
ing life. Draw them near to the heart of your Son so that they
can understand the beauty and joy that awaits them when the
Lord Jesus calls them to be His witness.
Amen

Faith Formation Update:
From the time that I started working in this collabora-
tive I had this outlook that I want to share with all of you. One
of my loves in the Church is the Liturgy, the Mass. For me it is
such a close and personal encounter with Jesus Christ because it
is Jesus Christ. It isn’t some symbol or representation of Jesus;
it is Jesus.
Past of the mission of Church is dictated to us by Jesus
in Matthew’s Gospel in chapter 28 verse 19 to go out and make
disciples of all nations. This evangelistic nature of our faith is
to share with others what it is that we have received from oth-
ers. This sharing helps to build up our community and
strengthen our church. For all of us we need to look deep with
in ourselves and ask, am I doing as Jesus asked me to do?
One way that I propose for us to grow as a community
and to go deeper in our faith and likewise grow in our relation-
ships with each other as a community is to learn together. None
of us are experts in everything and we could all stand to learn
something from one another. I recently ran across an advertise-
ment online for Bishop Robert Barron’s The Mass video series.
I am going to take a look at it over the weekend and I hope to
be able to share it with all of you. If you think you would be
interested in learning more about the Mass and what is going on
and why it is that we all participate in the Catholic aerobics of
sit, kneel, stand, repeat… or to know how transubstantiation
takes place or even what transubstantiation is or perhaps what
the role of the Communion of the Saints plays in Mass, please
send me an email. I would love to hear from you and learn with
you. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and a wonderful
Independence Day!
God bless,
Adam
Collaborative Vocation Team
The Collaborative Vocation Team met on Monday, June 25,
2018. The team is composed of parishioners from all three par-
ishes. At this meeting our discussions focused on the initiatives
we are undertaking this summer. These initiatives are: a petition
for vocations in the Prayer of the Faithful each weekend, a cal-
endar with seminarians listed for each day of the month (these
are available at tables near the entries of the churches), at each
weekday Mass a seminarian will be prayed for by the priest and
the congregation.
Also discussed at this meeting were programs to be imple-
mented in late September. We will provide more information on
these in the future bulletins.
The team is working hard to foster a culture of vocations in the
Collaborative. It is important to encourage each person to fol-
low the vocation God is calling them to.
We are interested in welcoming new members to the Vocation
Team. Please contact Fr. Dave if you are interested in joining.
Peace in Christ,
Fr. Dave
