Laguna H onda G rapevine THE EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH ISSUE 31 | March 2010 LAGUNA HONDA HOSPITAL AND REHABILITATION CENTER | A COMMUNITY OF CARE SAN FRANCISCO DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH RESIDENT STORIES In celebration of Social Services Month, the Grapevine presents this resident story from the March Town Hall meetings. Happy month, social workers! Because of a disabling stroke, Romeo Andres became separated from every- one who knew him until fate brought him to Laguna Honda. Romeo had come to the United States from the Phillipines after he retired to be with his four adult children. But when he failed to return from a vaca- tion in Reno, his family lost all con- tact with him. They did not know that Romeo had suffered a stroke and had no way of telling anyone who he was or where he was from. Continued on Page Two YOUR RECOMMENDED DAILY ALLOWANCE Laguna Honda foodies celebrated Nutri- tion Month on March 17 with a bounti- ful display of healthy fare outside the kitchen. Food enthusiasts who stopped by for a taste included (left to right): Bar- bara Frank from the Lumetra and B & F consulting team; Jane Chen, RN; Eliza- beth Saiz, RN; Loretta Cecconi, RD; Pam Horenstein, SP; Elisa Wan, DTR; Tiffany Kearney, RD; Clair Wildman, RD; Linda Fong-Elbaggari, RD; Maryann Langvardt, RD; Julie Lai, RD; Becky Shiels, RD; and Monvipa SanPietro, RD. The celebration coincided with St. Pat- rick’s Day, giving everyone another good reason to eat their greens. “IF I WERE BUILDING MY HOUSE I WOULD BUILD IT JUST LIKE THIS” -SISTER ELIZABETH ON A TOUR OF THE NEW HOSPITAL RN Carol Kuo is the March employee of the month. The residents in the Chinese Lan- guage Program describe Carol as a comforting presence on the unit. Carol knows each resi- dent well. She gently touches her fingertips to a resident’s forehead when she leans over to say hello. One resident credits Carol’s quick and expert diagnosis with sav- ing his life. When his pulse rate dropped and his temperature rose, she quickly moved him to acute care where he received the life-saving treatment he needed. SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES Lie in a resident bed for 15 minutes. Close your eyes and use your senses to see what residents experience. Open your eyes and picture a resident’s first day at Laguna Honda. Laguna Honda’s organizational effectiveness project, designed to improve staff engage- ment and develop resident-centered care, began for many staff members with a re- quest to experience the world from a resi- dent’s point of view. The assignment was given to managers and supervisors by Lumetra Health Care Solu- tions and B & F Consultants, two national leaders in nursing home reform hired by the Controller’s Office to help direct the devel- opment of programs and services for the new facility. The Lumetra and B & F team asked manag- ers to participate in community meetings on the units and to have one-on-one conversa- tions with direct care staff, line staff and residents to learn what life is like at Laguna Honda for them. Over 100 of these mean- ingful discussions have been held so far, producing new insights into how hospital systems can be more responsive to resident preferences and staff input. Conversation starters have included: Ask a resident what it’s like to shower here and how it could be better. Ask a resident what they used to enjoy eat- ing before they moved to Laguna Honda, and what times of day they typically ate. When did they go to bed and when did they get up? Ask a resident what it’s like the first day the staff assignments change and they have a switch in who’s taking care of them. As the project proceeds, managers will continue to reach out on a one-to-one basis to ensure that direct care and line staff can easily and openly share ideas and concerns. The goal is to develop a system of delivering care that incorporates suggestions and feed- back based on staff members’ best instincts. Many of the changes driven by staff and res- ident conversations will be integrated into the daily work of the hospital by the time of the move, allowing us to take full advantage of what the new building has to offer. The year-long organizational effectiveness project is now in its fourth month.

A Thank You Note From Disability Rights California

Disability Rights California offered praise this month for city efforts in the success-ful community placement of former Laguna Honda resident Mark Chambers, the lead plaintiff in a 2006 federal class action law-suit filed by the organization.

In a statement emailed to city health of-ficials, including the Laguna Honda Social Services Dept., Elissa Gershon, attorney in the suit said,

“I had the pleasure of taking Mark out for lunch last week and was incredibly impressed by his apartment, the location, Mark’s ability to get around his new neigh-borhood, and his obvious happiness with his new life. We went to Cybelle’s pizza, where they know him by name, and although we got caught in a huge downpour, it was really fun. Mark has an amazing team and, while I know he has expressed his appreciation to you all in many ways, I would like to do the same. It’s one thing to create new oppor-tunities for people, but what really makes the difference is the energy, creativity, and commitment of the people doing the day in and day out. Thanks to you all from Dis-ability Rights California, on behalf of all the other people who will now be able to learn and benefit from Mark’s leadership and your hard work!”

Laguna Honda Executive Administrator Mivic Hirose said, “Mark’s success is a hallmark of the progress Laguna Honda has made to integrate seniors and adults with disabilities into the civic life of San Francisco. Our com-mitment is to continue to emphasize com-munity integration and independent living in everything we do.”

And the Oscar Goes To ...Laguna Honda once again won a support-ing role on the locally-filmed NBC-TV series Trauma this month. The Trauma crew, which filmed part of the show’s pilot episode at Laguna Honda last year, returned to campus to shoot scenes from one of the season’s final episodes. The visit marks a wrap for all filming at Laguna Honda, at least until after the move. And yes, it would be an Emmy, not an Oscar. Hmm ... what should we model on the red carpet, our classic old building look or our super hip new building design?

A Remembrance March marks one year since the death of former Executive Administrator John Kanaley. We remember John for his many kindnesses and his determination that each of us rise to our own personal best. When-ever we act in the name of community, we honor his contribution to Laguna Honda.
