Supporting Teens Who are Dealing with Homelessness – November 17, 2019

This year for our pre-Thanksgiving collection the Worship Arts committee is collaborating with our Mission Commission and Epworth Children & Family Services in supporting the youth served at Epworth’s Drop-In Center in Normandy. This center provides many services for youth experiencing homelessness, and we will be creating snack kits for them to share with their clients. Teens dealing with homelessness may be living on the streets, “couch surfing” at friends’ homes, sleeping in cars, staying in shelters, or anywhere that is classed as a non-permanent address. These teens are our sisters and brothers and need our attention, time, and help.

 The Epworth Youth Drop-in Center in Normandy provides:

Laundry and shower facilities Safer sex kits and classes Nutrition, clothing, and hygiene items Common areas to safely hang out or sleep, play games, and watching TV Computer work stations Cooking instruction Access to community resources such as STI and HIV testing, healthcare, legal aid, and

documentation assistance Resource referrals and information Group sessions offering skills training, recreational activities, and support for LGBTQ

youth and allies

Between services today, snack kits were prepared with the items you’ve so graciously donated. For those who have brought items to Traditional Worship, those items will be donated to Epworth to continue this service project. Thank you for continuing to be the church.

Rev. Max Hill: Max is passionate about relationships, community building, & the

intersection of faith & identity.

Max has recently served as a Student Pastor for Princeton Presbyterians, a campus ministry to the Princeton area. Previously, they served as Student Minister for Contextual Exploration, Community Engagement, and LGBTQ Belonging at Maryland Presbyterian Church in the Baltimore, a Student Pastor for LGBTQ Fellowship at Broad Street Ministry in Philadelphia and

Brick Presbyterian Church in the City of New York. Before that, Rev. Max was a grant writer and New Worshiping Community

founder/facilitator with United Campus Ministry at the University of Arkansas. Max completed their Masters of Divinity at Princeton Theological Seminary in May 2019.  They are fascinated by the creativity and diversity of God’s people and are enjoying meeting students, gathering for worship

and dinner, and discussing questions of faith. They are excited to serve as a Pastor in the Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery and Campus Minister for UKirk St.

NURSERY CARE While some children prefer to stay with their parents in worship, others enjoy the opportunity to meet new friends, play and learn stories from the Bible. Mrs. Robin is ready to greet your child with a happy smile and a generous spirit. The nursery is open from 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If there are no children in the nursery by 11:30 a.m., the nursery room will remain open for parents and children to enjoy together. There will be no nursery attendants on duty.

WGPC Audit PerformedOn October 14, 2019 the board of trustees received the following financial opinion from the firm of Anders CPAs and Advisors: "In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Webster Groves Presbyterian Church as of December 31, 2018 and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America." In other words, the results are "clean" which is what you want! Special thanks to Business Administrator Jan Scheuerer and financial assistant Joyce Kimmons for the many hours coordinating with the audit firm.

WGPC has been one of the last to offer a worship service on Thanksgiving Day.  For those who participated, it was a nice centering time of gratitude to God for our blessings.  However, worship attendance at that service has been declining for a number of years.  We have reached the point where it is no longer good stewardship of resources to continue that service.  This year, instead of a worship service held at church, we will provide a Thanksgiving liturgy for you to download and use at home.

CHILDREN'S OFFERING: This fall, the children’s offering will be collected to purchase piglets through the Presbyterian Mission Agency.  Our goal is to gather $160--enough for four piglets to help provide families with an important safety net and emergency source of income.
