Some encouragement for trans dermal clonidine

Oral clonidine has been used to treat Tourette's syndrome but is associated with compliance-limiting adverse effects including dry mouth and sedation. with a need for multiple doses. These restrictions prompted a pilot, placebo-controlled, double-blind, cross over study of the effects of transdermal clonidine, 0.1-0.4 mg/day, in 5 adults and 5 children with mild symptoms of Tourette's syndrome.

Tourette's Syndrome Global Scale scores improved slightly following both placebo and clonidine application (NS). However, 7 patients considered that they were improved during treatment and requested to remain on transdermal clonidine therapy. Transient heartburn, drowsiness. dry mouth, and localised erythema and dry skin were reported by 5, 7, 5 and 4 patients. respectively.
