Soma Marie Garner - Scenic painter/ set and costume designer

Soma Marie Garner is a scenic painter, set designer and ar st who currently resides in Melbourne.

With a background in both fi ne arts and set and costume design, Soma off ers a comprehensive service to any produc on looking to defi ne or enhance their work with the hand and eye of an ar st who understands the collabora ve nature of performance and set and costume design.

Soma has worked extensively amongst theatre, dance, fi lm and installa on and enjoys all disciplines as engagement in one always strengthens the others crea ng a truly mul - disciplinary approach to scenic pain ng and set design.

Soma is also an experienced life and landscape drawer and the collabora ve process of story boarding and process based conceptual development.

Soma prides herself as being able to work well independently or within a team. Soma o en collaborates with produc on teams, costume makers, designers, ar sts and specialist fabricators.

Soma also has a special interest in the arts and community cultural development working mainly with the elderly to improve the quality of life for senior ci zens through art workshops.

Soma loves the collabora ve process and is an asset to any produc on as a prac oner and as a person.

Scope of works: Dasien is a collabora ve piece where the counter play between dance and pain ng was explored.

Dasien explores the nature of Being; as an individual and in rela onship to the world and others.

Drawings and pain ngs were created for a fixed set and complemented with live drawing Certain drawings were projected to form a live backdrop which, the dancer could respond too.

Scope of works: Portraits of the 134 prisoners hung in Old Melbourne Gaol were created and hung in a cell as a walk through mobile.






Produc on: East of Zero (fi lm)

Commissioned by: Tymon Langford

Scope of works: This fi lm required a produc on designer capable of crea ng the artwork of an ar st who unwi ngly is commissioned to work for the Assad regime. Finished works, process work, studio work and a feature book were created for the fi lm in the studio and on set at the request of the director and art department.

Scope of works: Set and Costume Designs for Sophocles, Oedipus Rex where the protagonist and characters are set in an American Trailer Trash WWW Wrestling Tournament.
