The interview
• How did we Do?
• “I don’t trust any of you guys, Inspection providers or inspectors”
• “Like a Box of Chocolates, never knowing
what I will get.”
The research
• Six months, Dozens of transmission, gathering and midstream companies, as well as inspectors. ALL agreed
• Clients shared…
• “Solution - picture on a billboard, talk about every day, and certification alone is not the answer.”
• “Has changed how we do work. We have elected to buy EPC services to avoid the risk”
• Inspectors shared…
• “There are a lot of gray areas, hard to know what is expected.”
• “Supported when I make that tough call.”
The opportunity
After all those discussions, I realized there is a great
opportunity for improvement between what owners
want and what inspectors provide.
Why does this ‘Box of Chocolates’
metaphor exist?
• Variety is valued.
• Pay is significant
• Outsider on the team, duration short.
• Professional not Tradesman-80 percent non-technical.
Effective Communication and Leadership, not taught.
• Important to their success!
Why should we care?
• Increasingly fighting against well-organized and vocal
opposition.
• America’s competitive economic advantage.
• Inspectors, working with the contractor, serve on the
front lines to ensure gets done right!.
Learn from other industries with similar
challenges?
• The education industry, over the past decade:
• “Why does our work in schools need to change?”
Lessons learned
• The world, ever-changing, less equal, work to be more personalized.
• Accountability is more than a test score, monitoring and evaluating all
processes required for every student to achieve at the highest level
• Ultimate goal, every student, place they did not think they could be.
• Learning in the classroom through communication and collaboration.
What is the Pipeline Industry doing to
improve inspection?
• U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), through PHMSA, has Battelle, identifying the factors that influence inspector performance, their impact on the quality of inspections of existing pipelines.
• Raise the performance and reliability of the average inspector,”
• Four types of interventions:
