B ond F or men, wearing jewellery is mostly a

combination of aesthetics and functionality. Our watches show time, taste, and wealth. Our cufflinks keep shirts in place, while

showing off whim and style. And our rings more often than not declare lineage, heritage, and affiliations. Men, it seems, need a good reason to wear jewellery.

For women, jewellery is an entirely different proposition. While growing up amidst my father’s watch and jewellery business, I never quite got the full idea of what made some of the ladies go all out emotional over a diamond ring or bracelet. In a recent celebrity interview we conducted, this special relationship finally became a bit more tangible for me.

The interviewee’s take was that jewellery touches very personal spaces on a woman’s body. Her ears, wrists, or neck — areas that are off-limits to the touch of casual acquaintance. Wearing jewellery almost takes on the character of a protective shield, while conveying a sense of intimacy, grace, and elegance. Something highly personal yet specific, in other words.

Women thus form a deep and enduring bond with their favourite pieces of jewellery, and even make it a point to bequeath them to their favourite daughters, nieces, or friends. Very few gestures are more personal, lasting, and expressive of love and affection than that.
