Solid Waste Management

It rrefers to all the activities associated with the waste from its generation point till

its final disposal at landfill, these activities are divided into six main functional

elements:

Figure (): Functional Elements of Solid Waste Management, Tchobanoglous, et

al.,(1993).

- To develop solid waste management, all its functional elements should be

1- Waste generation:

- The word waste related with zero value items that either are thrown away or

collected together for disposal.

- The rate of waste generation varies through the year and from place to another.

- Waste generation is presented as (kg/capita per day) or (lb/capita per day)

(METAP, 2005).

- it depends on a set of complex factors, such as,

a -types and patterns of consumption,

b -household revenue(income)

c- lifestyles,

d-regulations,

e-climate

f-and yearly seasons (Kaplan et al., 2009).

Why we need to know the waste generation rate?

To proper design the management process like

(i) number of workers, (ii) working time, (iii) collection route and frequency,

(iv) collection vehicles and (v) containers size.

Lb: mean

pound = 454g

2. At source handling and storage:

- It Includes the activities associated with the management of solid waste until its

disposal in the storage containers that are collected later by collection services

provider (Tchobanoglouset al., 1993).

- It includes one or more of separation, storage, reuse or recycling.

What are the motivation keys for waste separation at source (home)?

o local regulations:

o The fees or charge exemptions are directly influence the amount of generated

solid waste. For example, in Germany the fees for un-seperated waste is high ,

while almost it is free separated glass, metal or plastic wastes (Sweep net,

2010).

o Space availability:

Separation at source precautions:

Attention and special requirements should be taken when SW stored at source like:

example

- organic waste should not be stored for long time to avoid its degradation and

odor formation.

- More precaution should be taken to prevent contamination of stored SW with

hazardous contaminants.

- The size and location of the storage container should be combatable with the

quality and quantity of the separated solid waste.
