MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE (MSW)

COMMOMNLY KNOW AS TRASH:Consist of things that one uses and consumes everyday, once discarded they are “thrown to the

trash”

Wrappers

Grass and yard trimmings

Furniture

Electronics

Old clothes and rags

Glass bottles

Food waste

Hair and other human waste

Plastic waste

Chemicals

Batteries

Cardboard and plastic boxes

Nylon bags, plastic bags and paper bags

Lard, oil and many other things …

These come from residential, commercial areas, markets, stores, hospitals and public spaces

HOW IS SOLID WASTE MANAGED IN EL SALVADOR TODAY

LANDFILLS:All areas dedicated for the permanent disposal of solid waste, by law, have to have a

lining membrane to prevent contamination of the water bed.

TRANSFER STATIONS:A prior stop before waste gets to the LANDFILL, waste is unloaded from the collection

trucks to be consolidated in a larger amount for its final destination. These stations are

designed to facilitate separation and decontamination of the waste before permanent

disposal.

REDUCTION ANS SEPARATION:This is done at the TRANSFER STATION, toxic contaminants are removed or neutralized. It

also creates the perfect opportunity for separation of recycle materials in countries with

a limited infrastructure.

SWIFT Workgroup International proposesProduce methane gas to generate energy, Gas and nutrient compost

Dry Anaerobic Digester

• Produces methane gas to

generate energy

• Energy self-sufficient

• Organic waste to compost

• Possibility to sell compost

• New jobs

• Opportunity to sell energy

• Generates carbon credits

• Compost is nutrient

NO ONE WANT TO BUY RECYCLED GLASS …

El Salvador urgently needs new industries, new jobs and economic opportunities. We

propose investing in the reclaimed and recycled glass industry to manufacture

products for domestic and international commerce.

Page 15: Solid Waste Management

We have enough recycled glass to beautify all of EL SALVADOR

MANAGEMENT The release of Methane gas

to the atmosphere from

landfills open air trash piles,

etc.

FOSSIL FUELSThey are produced by the

consumption of solid, liquid

or gasified fossil fuels. 46%

of the country’s energy is

produced in thermic plants

firing fossil fuels.

Every year El Salvador releases to the atmosphere an equivalent of

12 million metric tons of Carbon Dioxide CO2

Page 17: Solid Waste Management

What El Salvador releases to the atmosphere every year is an

estimated equivalent of $2.4 billion USD in potential carbon credits to

be sold in the international market. *
