Our Lady of Mt. Carmel HAITIAN Feast Mass

Monday, July 17th — 7:30pm

The History of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Mount Carmel is a mountain range in Northern Israel, rising 1742 feet above sea level. It is the site where the prophet Elijah adored the True God and battled the 450 priests of Baal (1 Kings 18:19-40). Later on, in this mountain range, several hermits established themselves, keeping the spirit of Elijah and his disciple Elisha. In the XIIth century AD, new hermits gathered in Mount Carmel. They were penitents-pilgrims who had come from Europe. They entrusted themselves to the Virgin Mary, founding a new Order. Thus, the Carmel is deeply associated with Elijah and Mary. From Elijah, the Carmelites inherited a burning passion for the living and true God, and with Mary they are committed to live in the footsteps of Jesus with the same intimate love. St. Simon Stock was the sixth superior-general of the Carmelites. Less than one century after the foundation, the Order suffered much persecution which prompted the monks to have recourse to the Blessed Virgin. Tradition says that Our Lady responded to their call through an apparition to St. Simon Stock on July 16th, 1251 as he knelt in prayer.

She appeared holding the Child Jesus in one arm and the brown scapular in the other hand while uttering the following words: “Receive, My beloved son, this habit of thy order: this shall be to thee and to all Carmelites a privilege, that whosoever dies clothed in this shall never suffer eternal fire. It shall be a sign of salvation, a protection in danger, and a pledge of peace.” The spirituality of Our Lady of Mount Carmel resides in 3 dimensions: contemplative prayer, fraternity and service. On this patronal feast of our Parish, let us ask Mary to give us a simple, deep faith and a devotion that does not fall into empty sentimentalism, but, well rooted in our hearts, leads us to rediscover every day the Good News of the Gospel and encourages us to announce it with faith and fraternal love. Br. Bernard-Mary, Pastor.

A heartfelt thank you to those who contributed to enhance our garden.

Hno. Bernard-Mary, Párroco.
