Project Title: Solar Lightening Project (Lightening a village)
Problem Definition:
Although the mountains of Nepal are endowed with great hydroelectric potential, many of the
villages at lower elevations do not have local hydro resources available to them. While electricity
is available in the larger towns and villages near Kathmandu, the more distant villages do not have
access to the utility grid, as line extensions through the high, rugged mountains are prohibitively
expensive. Currently, only 11% of Nepal’s 20 million people have access to electricity. The vast
remainder depend on kerosene and dry-cell batteries for illumination after dark, and have no access
to television or radio for news and entertainment. In a way, In Nepal, those without access to
electricity generally rely on kerosene wick lamps (in 2.4 million households). This form of lighting
is neither cost-effective nor environment-friendly. Fumes from the kerosene lamps affect the eyes
and lungs and contribute to global warming due to release of greenhouse gas. The quality of light
is inferior and there is a high risk of accidental fire. Additionally since kerosene has to be imported,
government has to spend its limited foreign currency Blackouts are a regular occurrence in Nepal.
From October until July, the coldest and darkest months of the year, the government restricts
electricity for up to 16 hours per day. The villages, though connected to the electric gird have to
stay in the dark for days due to the load shedding and minor problem in the grid. People in the
villages use kerosene wicked lamps, candles and pine woods to light up during nights.
Specially, women and children in particular are exposed to the smoke emission produced by those
lamps. This is one of the reasons for higher rates of infant mortality and morbidity and other
unhealthy living conditions. Release of incomplete carbon gas and other harmful particles in the
atmosphere due to the kerosene lamp. People spend more time in collecting the pine woods in the
forest.
Project Concept:
Solar electricity offers a clean, bright alternative light source for families and children to study and
perform different other productive works after their day's work in the fields is over. Solar electric
lighting systems convert the energy from sunlight into electricity. This energy is stored in batteries,
and can be used at night to power efficient compact fluorescent electric lights. Solar lights have
no smoke or flame, so they are healthier and safer than kerosene and wood.

The project will provide 100 houses with 20 Watts Solar Lightening system promoting green-
healthy renewable lights that will facilitate and improve healthy living in the village in the first
stage. The project will be a long-term program lightening the whole village with solar lights.
Project Objectives:
1. Supporting the children to study under clean-green solar lights.
2. Improving the light available in homes for evening activities including study, knitting
sweaters (handicrafts), animal husbandry and many other productive household activities.
3. Reduce health hazards from exposure to wood smoke, the labor used to for wood gathering
and chopping, as well as the environmental impacts of wood cutting.
4. Expand the project to the rural villages near Kavre district to promote better education and
renewable energy technology which in turn, is expected to improve the conditions for
health, education and well-being, without negatively impacting the fragile Himalayan
environment.

Project Organization and Partnership:
The project is being organized by Rotary Community Corps Simalchaur (RCC Simalchaur) and
donor Organizations in partnership with Shree Kalidevi Women Development Multipurpose
Cooperative Ltd. RCC Simalchaur will look after project organization while Donor Organizations
will be assisting financially. Kalidevi Woman Group will choose the individual houses for the
project installation and help to collect the local contribution amount. Both RCC and Woman group
will jointly organize the distribution program and monitor the whole project installation. Swogun
Energy Limited, Kathmandu provides the solar panel for installation and help technically to install
those panels in the village.

Project Monitoring:
Rotary Community Corps Simalchaur and Shree Kalidevi Women Development Multipurpose
Cooperative Ltd. will jointly monitor the project site to make sure the people are benefiting at
maximum from the project. The Solar Company, Swogun Energy has provided 2 years warranty
on different equipment that they use in Solar light installation, so they will support technically
whenever there is problem in the installed solar system for 2 years. To make sure the project will
go in long run and keeping the solar system operational, the Solar Company will train some village
technicians who can provide further technical help to the village dwellers charging some repair
fees.
Local Contribution Concept: Cash contribution from the local people will be collected which
will be spent in the project to purchase more solar panels. The idea will help in,
1. Making people responsible to what they receive from the project. They care better when they
have the feeling they have spent something in the solar system.
2. Increasing the no. of solar panels so that more houses can own the solar system.
3. Creating an environment to keep the systems well maintained for a sustainable running of
the project.

Past Achievements:
In 2014, RCC Simalchaur along with Rotary Club of Dhulikhel, Rotary Club of Edwardstown &
District 9520, South Australia supported the village with 45 units of the same Solar Lightening
system Installation. Swogun Energy Ltd. provided the technical assistance in the installation while
Shree Kalidevi woman Cooperative assisted in the project implementation. The project was the
Kickstarter project to enhance and improve the village health through renewable energy. This will
be helping reducing the CO2 emission as well.
