Solar Eclipse Factoids A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon and Earth. The Moon has to be between the Sun and Earth for a solar eclipse to occur when the Moon, directly between the Sun and Earth, casts a shadow on our planet. If you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse. Depending on the geometry of the Sun, Moon and Earth, there can be between 2 and 5 solar eclipses each year. Totality occurs when the Moon completely obscures the Sun so only the solar corona is showing. The longest a total solar eclipse can last is 7.5 minutes. The width of the path of totality is usually about 160 km across and can sweep across an area of Earth’s surface about 10,000 miles long.

If any planets are in the sky at the time of a total solar eclipse, they can be seen as points of light. The next total solar eclipse over the continental U.S. occurs April 8, 2024. Depending on where you are (on the center line), the duration of totality lasts at least 3 minutes and 22 seconds on the east coast of Maine and stretches to 4 minutes and 27 seconds in southwestern Texas. After that eclipse, it’s a 20-year wait until August 23, 2044 (and, similar to the 1979 event, that one is visible only in Montana and North Dakota). Total solar eclipses follow in 2045 and 2078.

Eclipse Begins9:06 a.m.

Totality Begins10:19 a.m.

Totality Ends10:21 a.m.

Totality Ends11:41 a.m.

Please Note: Sunriver is NOT in the path of totality and will not experience a total eclipse. The times are based on the path of totality passing through Madras, Oregon.
