UV Resistance
Plain bearings can be exposed to constant weathering when they areused outside. The UV resistance is an important measure and indicateswhether a material is attacked by UV radiation. The effects can extend fromslight changes in color to brittleness of the material. A comparison of thematerials to each other is shown in the following table. The results show that iglide®
plain bearings are suitable for outside use. Only for a few iglide® materials are anychanges expected.

The market for photovoltaic plants is booming. In a patent-pending tracking system for medium to large solar powerplants, the multidimensionally moving Triflex® R energy supplysystem from igus® safely guides the power supply lines.
Even if they are exposed to extreme conditions such as windand weather, Triflex® R delivers superior performance. The service life expectancy of the "s:wheel" plants ofRWenergy is more than 25 years. The plant is in motion thewhole day, following the course of the sun. The power can beled away, however, only at the rotation center.
This application shows the extreme range of motion of Triflex®
R. Triflex® R can rotate 380° in a meter section and in addition, every link pivots. This feature enables Triflex® R to move withthe tracking system.
Triflex® R’s high tensile strength and stability is achieved by theso-called "trailer principle", which interconnects the individualelements similar to a towing hitch. Mobility in all directions isenabled by this ball-shaped formation.

...this is guaranteed by the SolarOptimus tracking systems inConergy AG's photovoltaic plants. The dual axis drive systemcontrolled by astronomical algorithm raises the yield ofenvironment-friendly energy by around 30%. For themaintenance-free operation of the plants under extremeweather conditions, Conergy uses igus’® plain, plastic bearingsand rod end bearings and linear units.
iglide® at main bearing positions All bearing positions of the SolarOptimus are equipped withigus® products. The iglide® plastic bearings — installed at themain axles of the almost 20-meter long framework system —provide low-friction and maintenance-freedom. The"integrated" solid lubricant of the triboplastic also avoids dirt-attracting lubricants. This is an important requirement for thelong service life of the bearing under the given conditions.Conergy also uses iglide® G300, which is suited for pivotingand rotating movements at low to medium speeds. iglide®
G300 is dirt-resistant which is another vital requirement for theapplication.
Plain bearing for motor relief To relieve the drives, the developers at Conergy use plainbearings in the kinematics of the adjustment system.
DryLin® linear plain bearings enable accurate linear guidance ofthe axles. The DryLin® W bearing housing made of rugged zincdie casting moves on a stable rail profile; the tribological pairingof hard anodized aluminum (rail) and iglide® liner (housing)enables for low friction operation without "stick/slip" effects. The mounting plate for the support of the moving componentswas adapted by igus® at the request of the Conergydevelopers. Sand and dust do not harm this linear bearing.
Connection of solar module and framework systemFor the coupling bars which interconnect the solar modulemounting, Conergy opted for igubal® rod end bearings. igubal®
can endure high loads, has excellent dampening propertiesand weighs only 1/5 of conventional metallic bearing housings.
With SolarOptimus plants from Conergy, the solar power plant operator can increase the energy yield by around 30%.

On this prototype, the photovoltaic’s panels with a powercapacity of 4.5 KW are installed on a structure measuring7 x 4 x .98 ft with a load of 1,349 lbs. The photovoltaic’spanels follow – guided by the iglide® PRT slewing ring bear-ing – the sun on its rotary motion. The system makes a ro-tation during the day of approximately 180º and returns tothe zero position during the night. For that rotary motion, the solar panel producer from Portugal built up a test unitusing PRT slewing ring bearing, size 200 mm (PRT-01-200).
The test results from the prototype were very good, evenwith an additional load of 224.8 lbs in the corners of thestructure. In addition, the company is interested in otherigus® products for its solar panels. iglide® bearings andigubal® rod ends for the vertical movements have beenconsidered. igus® products are lubrication- and mainte-nance free as well as corrosion-free. Easy installation andlow coefficients of friction are important features in the solarpower industry.
Under construction in Moura/Portugal: a power station with an installed capacity of 62 MW – prototype pictured above
Main benefits: lubrication- and maintenance-free, low friction
igus® plastic bearings enable a smooth dry runningperformance with low driving force.
