• Incorrectly called Sodium Hyposulfate
PROPERTIES
• Large colorless crystals or as a coarse, crystalline powder
• Deliquescent in moist air
• Effloresce in dry air at temperature above 33˚C
• Very soluble in water
• Insoluble in alcohol
USES• Antidote for cyanide
poisoning
• Used in iodine poisoning
• Antichlor in bleaching paper pulps
ACTIVATED CHARCOAL USP 26
SYNONYM
• Carbon Ligni
DEFINITION• Residue from the
destructive distillation of various organic materials, treated to increase its adsorptive power
PREPARATION• Charcoal is
obtained by incomplete combustion of wood out of contact air, the residue left being composed of almost pure carbon
• Charcoal is usually inactivated by heating 500˚C to 900˚C in the presence of steam (known as activation)
Removes those substances previously adsorbed and most probably reduces the bigger particles into smaller particles having greater surface area
• Should be preserved in well closed container

• Deep blue, triclinic crystals or blue crystalline granules or powder
• Nauseous, metallic taste
• Effloresces slowly in dry air
• Acid solution (litmus)
• Freely soluble in water and in glycerin
• Very soluble in boiling water
• Slightly soluble in alcohol
USES
• Antidote for phosphorous poisoning
• Emetic, in doses of 300 mg
• Astringent in tonic, from 10 to 30 mg
• Tableting aids- diluent
