“Over 200 couples have celebrated their special day with us on Valentine’s Day over the past 5 years,” said Jeff Vasser, president of the ACCVA. “Couples return again each year to renew this special tie with each other and with Atlantic City.”

The ceremony is free for all couples and their guests, and will be performed in the Ballroom in Boardwalk Hall at 2:00 p.m. The event will include a champagne toast, wedding cake and photo

opportunities. Jeff George, entrepreneur, Cruisn’ One Captain and wedding officiant, will perform the non-denominational ceremony. Captain Jeff is new to our group ceremony and we look forward to another successful event with him at the helm.

Couples must pre-register for the Group Wedding event at Boardwalk Hall through the Atlantic City Convention & Visitors Authority’s official website at www.atlanticcitynj.com/group_tours/atlantic_city_group_wedding.aspx. Couples should register by Sunday, February 10, 2013. The website features event information and special hotel rates and packages will be available for couples and their guests.

All couples interested in getting married or united at the event must obtain their own marriage or civil union license. Couples must have a New Jersey license to get married in this ceremony. Couples can call their local vital statistics department for complete details.

Merils, Touche, Che Peri, Tattinger’s, Déjà vu, Polo Bay, Maynards Café, Studio Six, Club Tru, Casbah Night Club, MIXX, Providence, 32 Degrees, The Pool After Dark, mur.mur, Dusk and HQ. From the old days of the down-beach clubs to today where Atlantic city casinos are the center of South Jersey nightlife, South Jersey nightlife has changed over the years. It started with independently owned and operated business to the now big conglomerate casino companies putting the squeeze on local nightlife. Gone are the days of the battle of 50 cent night vs. “Beat the Clock.” Now it is the battle of who has the biggest star or celebrity partying at the club that makes or breaks the venue today. Just a little over 15 years ago, if a celebrity came to your club it was by choice. They came to party and hang out with their entourage and drink champagne, pick up women and have a great time. Now, the celebrities are paid mega bucks to come hang out at the clubs and sometimes barely interact with the people who are paying to come see them. The consumer doesn’t choose where to go today by whether or not they have fun at a certain club, but by what celebrities appear at them.

DJ’s used to be more or less from the immediate area, carry crates of records and playing all night for just a couple hundred of dollars. Today, the DJ’s come from all over the world with their laptop in hand, their entourage, and hospitality riders of bottle service, hotel suites and limo

service. One is not better than the other; it is just the way the business has evolved. The DJ of today can be just as big a celebrity as an Oscar winning actor, or international recording artist. He packs the club, not always by what he spins, but because of who he is dating, what he has done to get on TMZ, or being on a world renowned television show.

This writer remembers growing up down-beach going to places such as, Polo Bay and Gilhoolies in Margate, and then going uptown to Déjà Vu in Atlantic City on a Saturday night. All the clubs, back in the day were owned by individuals with managers, and promotions were done in house - mainly radio driven. Today, major companies own and operate the clubs at the shore, entire marketing departments from casinos are deployed to advertise them, and outside promotional companies are hired to drive bodies to the various clubs like herds of cattle. Gone are the days of bar hopping down the street to 3 or 4 different venues and a big night of spending was $100. Nowadays, that $100 sometimes barely covers the entry fee at one of these Mega-Clubs.

Casbah Nightclub is where the transformation all began. Casbah nightclub opened at the turn of the 21st century as Atlantic City’s first casino Mega-Club, bringing all the elements people have come to expect from a big night out at the resort — a wild crowd illuminated by laser lights and fueled by DJs playing the latest hits through a booming sound system. Ever since, the clubs have been degenerating the faithful with that crazy Casbah sound.

Borgata was next with its version of nightlife, The MIXX. Two stories of heart pulsating beats, private bottle service rooms overlooking the dance floor and fancy upscale décor. This club set the standard for how the social elite partied, as they perfected the art of bottle service.

New York operator’s of Providence nightclub then moved in at the Jersey shore at The Quarter inside Tropicana Hotel and Casino, along with 32 Degrees, Cuba Libre and Carmine’s Italian Restaurant making this the area’s first entertainment and dining venue with multiple choices. They have since added Boogie Nights to the line-up of entertainment, options of many venues for one to choose from all under one roof.

The Pool After Dark was then built and reset the standard for nightlife in Atlantic City. A 9-story glass enclosed pool oasis. Originally built as just an amenity to the Waterfront Tower, The POOL transformed into a nightclub at 10:00 pm, and for a couple of years was the only place where you could go to a club and swim at a POOL all at the same time. According to Howard Weiss, the Pool is different than any other club in the world because it has two identities. It is a pool by day and a nightclub by night.

Dusk then brought nightlife back to the center of the city, opening their doors inside the old Planet Hollywood location inside of Caesar’s Hotel and Casino. This nightlife venue has been a mainstay for celebrity appearances along with having the longest running

local resident DJ, Sat-One. Even this venue has evolved over the past couple of years as they have added Bar 21 and The Boardwalk Beer Garden all within the confines of their original space.

The latest club to enter the battle in Atlantic City for your entertainment dollars is HQ, AMG’s east coast version of their style of a Mega Club. Opening this past summer, HQ has taken the Atlantic City scene by storm booking the biggest names in the EDM DJ scene. High end bottle service, L.E.D. glow sticks, and the occasional champagne shower coming from the DJ booth are all apart of the experience that the ownership group, AMG, from Las Vegas, delivers to its guests.

All of the evolution of nightlife at the South Jersey Shore has come at the expense of the local operators. Most of their venues are now abandoned buildings in deteriorating areas of the city. Some of the down-beach venues that didn’t survive as night clubs are now thriving restaurants such as, Tomatoes and Sofia’s on the Back Bay in Margate. Other venues that will be remembered are “Brownies by the Bay” in Somers Point. This venue continues to flip identities on a yearly basis to no avail.

As somebody who has lived through the past 20 years of change in Atlantic City nightlife, and is one of those owners whose club is no longer around, I miss the days of old. However, I really enjoy the venues and hospitality that the Mega-Clubs of today have to offer.

DJ Jenna PalmerOne of Las Vegas’ Finest

13

DJ Jenna Palmer was born and raised in Las Vegas, the city of entertainment. It was inevitable for her to become fascinated with music. She began working at The Beach Club, one of Vegas’ first night clubs, as the Entertainment Director. Her enthusiasm for music continued to grow, as well as her interest in DJing. She began DJing at The Beach Nightclub then gained a prestigious residency at Wynn’s Encore European Pool.

Currently, Jenna holds residencies at Voodoo Nightclub and Lounge and Encore Beach Club. She is also the only female to mix for the number one radio station in Las Vegas with over 500,000 listeners each week, 98.5 KLUC (a CBS radio station) Afterhours show, CLUB 985.

Philly, Atlantic City and South Jersey, meet Las Vegas’ DJ Jenna Palmer...

How did you get started in this business? In 2003, I began working at one of the first nightclubs in Las Vegas, The Beach, as their Entertainment Coordinator. I got to work directly along side local legend DJ John Kamahele, whose knowledge of music is endless and electrifying. Needless to say, I was inspired and not long after I purchased my own equipment and started practicing.

What do you like most about performing? There is nothing greater than being able to take a crowd on a “ride” with music. It is an absolute natural high! I love it.

You’ve worked with a lot of celebrities. Who has been your favorite to work with and why? Pitbull. Hands down. He is a genuinely a really nice guy.

What do you think makes you different from other performers that DJ in Las Vegas? My music selection and stage presence. You have stay unique in Las Vegas. There are so many DJs here. I enjoy making custom cuts, flip edits and hype edits. Gotta stay fresh. My staple song that ALWAYS gets the crowd moving is Clubkillers Atom Countdown (JD Live Bootleg).

What is a day in the life of DJ Jenna Palmer like? It begins with a BIG cup of coffee. Then straight to the studio to see what’s new. After the studio I like to work out, get groceries for the evening, cook dinner and then I am off to do what I LOVE!

What do you hope your life looks like 10 years from now? Ten years from now I see myself owning my own music entertainment company, managing talent and producing my own tracks.

What can I say. I truly LOVE this industry!

Mmmm, just smell that supper club, fresh out of the new year and everything. Jazz started us off in a city we don’t go to often: Brigantine. She chose L’aragosta which was a restaurant most of us, including myself, have never been to. The first thing I did was look up the translation of this word which was “lobster” in Italian.

Even though my GPS suggested all kinds of creative ways to get there, do yourself a favor and take the Atlantic City Expressway to the AC Connector. This will literally drop you off in Brigantine. Stay straight, and when you see the lighthouse on your left, the restaurant will be on your right.

Being as it was wintertime, Brigantine was a barren wasteland and there was no wait for our table even though a reservation was made. There were a few people already dining and it had a cozy mom and pop feel to it. We were greeted by an Italian man and woman with slightly thick accents. That’s when I decided that this place was going to be good.

Jen brought a bottle of Riesling as this was a BYOB, but I passed on this and decided to be a teetotaler this evening. We then got a chance to look at the menu which was filled with all of your usual Italian favorites, a lot of them infused with seafood. Why you would the name an Italian restaurant by Lobster? Now it made more sense to me. We started out with everyone’s favorite: bread! Our waitress brought out a combination of

regular bread and lightly seasoned garlic knots. There was also butter and olive oil to accompany them. This was all very good and we dug in.

Next up were the salads, which we all got except for Meg. She got the potato soup that she said was really good. Jazz got the fanciest salad, which was bundles of smoked mozzarella cheese, mixed greens, and prosciutto dressed in a balsamic vinaigrette. The rest of us got arugula salad topped with cranberries, walnuts and goat cheese. These were all a la carte.

I had a tough time deciding what to order though. Everything sounded really good. I love pasta and I wanted to get some sort of red sauce to go with it while still getting seafood as well. I found the perfect marriage in the linguini del mare. The pasta, which had a light tomato sauce, contained clams, scallops and crabmeat. I wouldn’t call it loaded and the crabmeat was hardly identifiable, but the scallops were some of the largest and most tender I’ve ever had.

Meg, Deneen and Jen also got pasta dishes while Jazz ventured out and got risotto. Everyone really seemed to enjoy what they ordered. Meg and

I ordered dessert (which was slightly hard to understand as described with the accent). We went over to the display case to check it out. I was surprised there was no Tiramisu and we almost decided to not get anything at all based on the mediocre look of things. However, my eyes locked on the creme brulee cheesecake and we each decided to get a piece (mostly based on the fact that I worried that the piece would be too small to share, it wasn’t).

Overall, I have to recommend L’aragosta restaurant. Everything we ate was really good. It wasn’t until we got home that we discovered that the waitress had switched two of the entrees. They ended up going home with the wrong people despite her labeling both the container and the bag she put them in.

Jen’s pick is for February, which might get pushed back a week to slide nicely into Atlantic City Restaurant Week. You will have to turn in to see for sure.

The Caipirinha is known as Brazil’s national cocktail. This drink is made with cachaca sugar and lime. Cachaca is Brazil’s famous distilled alcohol and the drink uses both cachaca and molasses-based rum. It can leave you feeling tipsy if you’re not much of a drinker, but for a true taste of Brazil, it’s a must. Note the drink’s colors also match Brazil’s flag. Naturally, there have been many variations on the drink including the Caipivodka, which substitutes Cachaca with Vodka.
