Treasurer’s Report 5

By most external appearances, the Fall is a slow time for the Medical Plastics Division. But behind thescenes, many members are working diligently to assemble technical programs for upcomingconferences.

Former Chair Len Czuba is constructing MPD sponsored sessions for the MDM West Conference inAnaheim, CA to be held 13-14 FEB 2012. There will be two sessions which include New Polymers andProcess Technologies for Medical DevicesProcess Technologies for Medical Devices.

There are seven people reviewing submissions for the MPD sessions at ANTEC 2012 as well as HenkBlom who is managing the technical program. While paper submission to the ANTEC 2012 programfor the Medical Plastic Division is closed, we are always interested in hearing from anyone who might beinterested in making a Keynote Address at one of the Medical Plastics Division sessions. A KeynoteAddress is a half hour or hour long presentation at the beginning of a session made by an invitedspeaker. No paper is required.

ANTEC 2012 is earlier than usual, in the first week of APRIL 2012, so make your plans soon.

I hope to see you there!

Topical Topics: Contributions from Our Members

Wh id th t l th l i dit d t? J d F d Who said that polyethylene is a commodity product? Jordan Freedman shows us the hi-tech aspect of polyethylene in medical plastics.

Review of the 5th UHMWPE International MeetingDrexel University, Philadelphia, PA September 22 - 23, 2011 Septe be 3, 0 The UHMWPE International Meeting is an event that gathers orthopedic researchers from around theworld every two years to discuss issues and developments in ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) research for orthopedic applications. You wouldn’t think that this would be a big crowd, butthere were over 100 people in attendance. The main focus of this year’s meeting was evaluation ofantioxidant additives, such as vitamin E, to prevent oxidation of highly crosslinked UHMWPE. Highlycrosslinked polyethylene is used in orthopedics because high wear resistance helps prevent bone resorptionp y y p g p p pcaused by wear particles. The big debate is on the best way to stabilize the free radicals left in the materialafter crosslinking. In the general plastics industry, additives for oxidative stability are old news, but it is a fairly new conceptin orthopedics. The first highly-crosslinked product that utilized vitamin E as an antioxidant came on themarket in 2007. Since then, there has been a flurry of activity in the research community to furtherinvestigate vitamin E and other antioxidants as additives to UHMWPE. One of the major topics wasbiocompatibility of polyethylene wear particles that contain vitamin E. Researchers presented data thatshowed that vitamin E containing particles had no effect on dendritic cells and no effect on thedifferentiation of stem cells. There were also papers presented that showed that when macrophages wereexposed to vitamin E containing particles, they actually produced less cytokines than when exposed toplain polyethylene particles. There was not a clear theory presented as to why this is the case, but otherstudies have corroborated the findings.

Page 13: SOCIETY OF PLASTICS ENGINEERS Medical Plastics Divisions3.amazonaws.com/rdcms-spe/files/production/public... · 2014-03-04 · Address is a half hour or hour long presentation at

One of the ways we in the medical device industry learn is through retrieval studies. There were severalretrieval studies presented at the UHMWPE meeting including long term studies on traditional andcrosslinked polyethylene and short term studies on vitamin E containing polymers. One “hot” topic thatwas discussed is data pointing to a new mechanism of in vivo oxidation for melt-stabilized highlycrosslinked UHMWPE. Researchers suggested that the absorption of synovial fluid lipids into the surfaceof the polyethylene is causing oxidation in the polymer This concept will be driving polyethylene researchof the polyethylene is causing oxidation in the polymer. This concept will be driving polyethylene researchfor years to come!! In the orthopedic community, we have been using more or less the same UHMWPE since 1963. Onepaper that was presented focused on changing the actual polymerization process to affect the mechanicalproperties and the ease of crosslinking. I predict that there will be more research groups going back to thebasic chemistry and polymerization process trying to optimize strength. With that, I hope you enjoyed the jaunt into the world of orthopedic UHMWPE. The 6th UHMWPEInternational Meeting is scheduled for September of 2013 in Torino, Italy.
