SOCIETY FOR THE PERPETUATION OF THE DESERT-BRED SALUKI

Just what are we perpetuating and by what means to we approach the task? What do we mean by desert-bred and does it differ from Country of Origin (COO)? Historically, the Society was established to collect information and acknowledge those salukis found in the various countries of origin. The COOs included thus those countries of the Middle East, Central Asia and areas of northern Africa. If one studies maps of these areas, one finds that the terrain varies considerably but in general all the areas include desert environments. Initially, the largest number of COO imports came from Saudi Arabia and perhaps lead to the idea that the DB/COO salukis were only those from the Arabian peninsula. But, in western registries, salukis from Syria, Egypt, Iran were among the early imports. For years, the number of imports in the USA were associated with salukis brought back to this country primarily by individuals who worked or were associated with the oil industry in the Middle East. During the early years-1960s,70s and 80s this number was relatively small and most were looked upon by people with AKC registered salukis as being little more than mongrels. The number of litters produced was small and the resulting progeny usually placed in pet homes or retained by the breeder. There were some very vocal groups on either side of the issue. In recent years several things have occurred requiring that we look carefully at many different aspects of the COO saluki. With the acceptance of the Society as a domestic registry by the American Kennel Club it is now possible for salukis who have reached the gen-3 level of registration to become registered with the AKC. This has put the breed in a position of envy for many other breeds because it means that the genetic pool is open to the introduction of new “blood” from the COO salukis. Many breeds today have reached a place where because of the in/line breeding resulting from small founder populations and requirements of only using dogs in the registry, inherited diseases have increased in the populations. The thrust of most of the canine genome research today is to identify the genes causing such diseases and to create a test to identify carriers. BUT, what about the COO saluki? The geographic area covered in the COO designation is vast. It includes the Middle East, Central Asia and northern Africa. Since the USSR was dissolved in 1989 and many countries have become independent, we have learned more about salukis in these COOs. One statement common to all is that salukis in each area are of varied types and that one finds feathered as well as smooth individuals in all areas with a wide range of coat colors. There is a variety of types. These are all members of the same ancient breed. Unfortunately to the mind of many, some of the newly independent countries have initiated a program for establishing a national breed. They have written a standard describing a type from the many found in their country and are breeding and registering that type. As such, they are establishing a restricted breeding population which is likely to follow in the footsteps of the many breeds in established registries. With the opening of so many new areas to the world, imports from these countries are appearing. Without certified pedigrees from recognized registries, their owners have been and will be turning to the Society. It is here that the critique process becomes so important. Are these individual imports typical of salukis? With positive critiques, the imports enter the Society registry as gen-0 and three generations of their descendents must go through the critique process for Society registration and eventually even AKC registration. The latter produces the source of new genetic materials for the gene pool. How or if we reach the gen-3 level then is the question. Do all salukis of gen-3 designation go on to AKC registration? Can the owners decide not to go that route? Yes, but if one of the reasons for the Society registry is as a route to renewing the gene pool, what is accomplished if registration is not pursued? When we talk of perpetuation of the DB/COO saluki what exactly do we mean? The saluki is /has been a hunting hound. In many areas of the world including some of the COOs, there is limited access to testing for this hunting ability. The OFC people will maintain that only if the salukis are tested and proven to retain their hunting abilities should they be used for the perpetuation of the breed. That then excludes large parts of the population which do not have the opportunity to hunt. It is not simply whether or not the ability to hunt in retained, but pushed to the next step….only the best are to be bred to best. Judged in competitions subject to human ideas of what is best.

3

There are many ways to approach how we perpetuate these COO salukis for the future. No one way is the absolute. Breeding practices will vary with individuals. The most common was the crossing DB with AKC salukis. We have been told many times that this has produced a superior hunting hound that is faster and runs longer than the imports. In a few cases, DBs were bred only to other DBs. This occurred within a smaller population. When considering the value to an open gene pool, which is likely to produce the greatest influence?

When salukis reach the gen-3 level, what sort of contribution will they make to the gene pool? We can have salukis with 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% contributions from recent imports. Which are most likely to contribute more to our gene pool?

The genetic contribution of say a great-grandparent to any given

individual of the current generation can vary all over the place, from fairly significant to effectively zero, as a result of strictly random genetic processes. You can have individuals with identical pedigrees and very different genetic makeup. If you are talking about ancestors more than two or three generations back, there is a significant likelihood that any given one of their descendants contains *no* genetic material at all from that ancestor. Those probabilities can be calculated, but the important thing to understand is that they are only probabilities, with no predictive value in any individual case. Probabilities tell you what to expect if you examine a thousand or ten thousand individuals with a particular pedigree. They tell you nothing about any one individual. (quoted with permission of Dr. J. Burchard)

We have had little opportunity to observe what influence the gen-3s will do as they enter the AKC registry. As it stands now, we have to wait for three generations before the COO salukis can be combined with the AKC dogs in their registry. The registries in other countries in Europe vary in the timing of registration recognition. Inclusion can occur with the first generation, putting the blood of the COO up front immediately.

In the article to follow, our Registrar has listed all those salukis that are gen-3 as of Aug. 1, 2006. One can estimate the % of COO in many of these animals by looking at the registration status of sire and dam as listed.

COUNTRY OF ORIGIN SALUKIS- INDIA, the Rampur and Caravan Hounds, Saluki (Grey) Hound of the Orient © Denise Como, 1997, 2006 Golden eyes, outlined in kohl. Intelligence and determination steadfastly return one’s gaze. A golden dog, hair tipped in black. A powerful dog, with the exotic look of the Far East. Meet Ganesh, a young male Rampur Hound, one of the truly rare sighthound breeds of India. Though their origins have long faded into obscurity, these gazehounds once numbered among the favorites of the Maharajahs. In October, 1996, my husband and I recovered the only colony of Rampur Hounds known outside of India – numbering a scant seven – from a remote area of Quebec, Canada, and transported them to our home in central New Jersey. The hounds had never been socialized, had never seen a lead or collar, and – with the exception of one hound – had never been in a vehicle. Crate? What was a crate? From the moment we backed our borrowed conversion van out of the dirt driveway and headed south, I wondered at the insanity of the project. Had we truly taken on more than we could handle? The 19-hour-long trip home was interesting, to say the least. Friends met us at the house, and helped sort out the Rampur Hounds. It became apparent that there were three distinct “packs” among the seven hounds. When they were sorted, we found that we had two five-and-half year old litter sisters, Kulu and Taj. Ganesh, a two-and-a-half year old male, his litter sister Bombay, and their younger sister Cintamani, belonged to Kulu. Four-year-old Shankar and his litter sister Shakti belonged to Taj. Everyone was sired by the same dog, Gandhi. This was not a gene pool – this was barely a puddle!

Fig. 1 Bombay Taj and her daughter Shakti seemed to be a pair, so they went home with Tony & Cindy Scardaville. The remaining “packs” consisted of Kulu, Ganesh and Cintamani in one,

19

and Shankar and Bombay in the other. We found that the hounds functioned in a matriarchal fashion, and the alpha bitch ruled. In our case, the overall alpha was Kulu. She alone of the surviving hounds had been free to run and to hunt, and rode in the breeder’s pickup truck while he did errands. To further complicate the relocation, we were informed that Cintamani might be in whelp to Shankar, but no one had any idea if and when she may have been bred, or when her puppies might possibly be due. A few days after their arrival, Cintamani went into labor, but lost both puppies due to a bad presentation of the first puppy. It took over four months for the hounds to learn to settle into their new environment. The beasts apparently took a silent vote, and decided unequivocally that my husband, Richard, was the next coming of the deities – they idolized him. I was simply the humble caregiver, the live-in kennel help. The Rampur Hound, also known as the Rampur Greyhound or North-Indian Greyhound, probably did not actually come into contact with their cousins until the British occupation of India, at which time English Greyhounds were imported and infused with native breeds. Rampuri (or Rampuree) are Greyhound-sized – about 26-27 inches at the shoulder – but disproportionately wide and muscular when compared to most other sighthounds. They have a high prey drive (in the real sense of the phrase), and their hunting prowess was legendary by all accounts. They were used for jackal control, and also to hunt lions, leopards, tigers and panthers, and occasionally blackbuck, wild boar, foxes, hare and even fowl. They were built to cover great distances at high speed, needed great endurance, and were able to withstand hard going in hot weather. A test of courage was for a lone Rampur to take down a jackal. Having seen our pack of three in serious hunt mode, I was amazed at their intelligence, and their ability to communicate with each other. The breed was nearly obliterated by India’s move to independence in 1947; with the fall of the huge palatial estates of the Maharajahs, so fell the Rampur Hound. Over the years, the infusion of other sighthound types, most notably the aforementioned English Greyhound, resulted in the near extinction of the breed as the Rajahs knew it. “Purebred” Rampuri are very difficult to find, and only a handful of old-time breeders in remote areas of India still keep them. Via telephone discussions, I was told that the hounds are considered difficult to handle and impossible to keep by city dwellers, and are only found in minuscule numbers in isolated rural regions. To our knowledge, our seven are the only non-native Rampuri, descended from a pair of littermates shipped from India to Canada in 1984. The Rampur Hounds are powerful and determined hounds, and although friendly to humans, they play very rough. A session of several hounds with tennis balls, Frisbees or lure toys tends to leave a person slightly battered and exhausted. The dogs have wonderfully large oval-shaped feet that spread and grab, with heavy, distinctive webbing between their toes. They use their feet extensively, and the thick pads are reminiscent of all-terrain vehicle tires. Anyone who appreciates the agility of a good polo pony will also

20

appreciate the ground-covering capabilities of a Rampur. Their sense of balance is amazing. Individual hounds have variously been found standing with all four feet on a narrow window sill, ricocheting off a half-inch wide piece of board, leaping atop a 6-foot-high stone column – they are definitely not for the faint of heart. They steal everything, and seem fond of ingesting all sorts of fabric – at least ours were. They can be stubborn in the extreme, and quite willful. When compared to the modern racing Greyhound as we know it, the Rampur Hounds are longer and somewhat flatter-backed, have longer tails, longer first and second thighs, deeper briskets, longer and more muscular necks, and wider bodies. While any color is acceptable, the traditional color is historically “mouse” grey, which is a very dark, plush blue-grey. Golden (which I suspect are actually blue-fawn dilutes) and brindles are known, as well as particolors. Blacks are said to be the rarest, but they do occur. Ears should be pendant or “drop” ears, rather than the tight rose ear of the Greyhound, Borzoi, or Whippet. Eye color remains controversial, as the yellow or golden eye is mentioned

Fig. 2 Tai historically as a distinct breed characteristic (as is the mouse-grey color). A German translation of an old Indian standard states that eyes should be dark to light brown. Usually, a dog’s eyes will reflect light after dark. We noticed that the Rampuri eyes glow when the sky is heavily overcast, as well as at dusk. We have several photos of this eerie phenomenon. As a totally unscientific observation, it appears that the females eyes glow yellow, and the males’ eyes have a greenish glow. It’s very peculiar. Our colony ranges from having bright golden eyes in certain light, to eyes that are quite dark brown. Since these seven hounds are too valuable in terms of conservation to attempt open field activities with them, our hopes must lay with the next generation. Imagine all the qualities that make these hounds special, in puppies that are nurtured and raised as our

21

own hounds are nurtured and raised. With their intelligence and athletic abilities, the possibilities are endless. Note: Our Taj is the Rampur featured in Dr. Bruce Fogel’s book, The Encyclopedia of the Dog. Although all the “facts” contained therein are not necessarily as accurate as they could be, the book is still interesting. Update: At the time of this updated article, there are only two Rampur Hounds alive: Taj, and her daughter, Shakti. Both have had bouts with various cancers, and both are spayed. Taj is 15 years old, and Shakti is nearly 14. We lost the others to a variety of serious illnesses, including renal failure, gran mal seizures, cancer, cervical instability, and what we suspect was brain damage as a puppy. No offspring were ever born. After 8 years of continuous inbreeding – Gandhi bred to his litter sister, then to daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters, etc. – we suspect that the breeding vitality of the dogs was diminished. Taj and Shakti’s advanced ages, however, present interesting contradictions to this theory.
