Exciting developments in the field of neuroscience are leading to a new understanding of how the brain works that is beginning to transform teaching in the classroom. Neuroscience & the Classroom: Making Connections brings together researchers and educators in a dialog about how insights into brain function can be harnessed by teachers for use in their own classrooms to address their own particular challenges. Course components include 42 video segments interwoven with an online text and other useful resources on a comprehensive Web site. The Web also includes interactive simulations of neuroscience research tools, glossary, and course guide for teachers to use for sustained professional development. Produced by Science Media Group at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in association with the Mind, Brain, and Education program at the Harvard GSE; and the Brain and Creativity Institute and Rossier SOE at the University of Southern California. 2012.

Seeing Others from the Self
This unit emphasizes the learner as an inherently social being and examines how social emotions, such as admiration and empathy, manifest on the neural level. In the classroom, a music teacher steps away from her classical training, allowing her students to express emotions through their instruments and to work with their older peers to learn the basics. A high school teacher who uses video testimonies of individual Holocaust survivors encourages her students to personalize historical events and appreciate their relevance to their own lives.
Implications for Schools
Educators from a Montessori program in Massachusetts to a school district in rural Alaska and urban schools in California are applying neuroscience research principles to specific lessons and teaching practices. See how emotional engagement, dynamic skill theory, adaptive technologies, and shifting perspective are used in the classroom with students at many developmental levels, ages, and backgrounds to enhance their learning and understanding.

America’s History in the Making> A professional development course for middle and high school teachers
This multimedia professional development course delves into American history content, as well as new approaches to presenting it in the classroom. Through the integrated use of video, online text, classroom activities, and Webbased interactive activities, teachers explore America’s history from the PreColumbian era through Reconstruction in Part I, and follow in Part II with the settlement of the West through contemporary times. The video portion of each unit is divided into three segments: Historical Perspectives, an overview of the historical era; Faces of America, in which biographies of individuals illustrate larger events; and Hands on History, a behindthescenes look at how history is studied, documented, and presented. Additional print and Web units introduce historical and digital research methods to strengthen teachers’ knowledge of American history. An online textbook, composed of primary source documents and maps, journal articles, excerpts from two leading collegelevel textbooks, and other supporting contextual information, deepen the ideas and concepts explored in the video. The course materials are accompanied by facilitator guides that present handson learning activities for professional development providers or individual use. Produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting. 2007.
