Document C“It is not only necessary to have people with money. They must also be prepared to risk losing that money

in order to make a profit by investing it in new businesses. In Britain this " middle class risk mentality " existed;

in the rest of Europe it did not. Another vital point was that Britain was the only country in Europe to have a national bank, the Bank of England, and a national

Stock Exchange, or bourse, which encouraged people to invest money in companies in order to earn a profit.”

Document EThe development of the railway stimulated the economy

in two important ways. First, cheap and efficient transportation lowered the carriage cost of goods.

This meant that goods were cheaper in the shops and this increased the demand. The increase in demand led

to the expansion of factories which required more energy. The need for coal grew because it provided

power for the factory engines, steam powered ships and steam locomotives. Second, the demand for iron

increased. Iron was needed to make the railway tracks, steam locomotives and the giant Watt steam engines

that provided energy to run factory machinery.
