Acknowledgement

First and foremost, we would like to thank you our lecturer, Mr. Shankar for opening up

our minds and sharing us the knowledge that he learned in his younger days. If it was not of him,

our minds would still be as narrow as the thinnest line created in history. As once said by Simon

Mainwaring, “The simple act of saying ‘thank you’ is a demonstration of gratitude in response to

an experience that was meaningful to a customer or citizen”.

We also would like to acknowledge each other’s presence in all the meetings that we held

together. We are eternally grateful for one another for being a good sport throughout this whole

assignment as well as for contributing the work equally. We would like to express our gratitude

and appreciation for the generosity, friendship, and work done out of this assignment.

Introduction

Introduction, as we construed them to be, should start at the beginning. Whether it is the

start of a story, start of a journey, start of a journal, or even an explanatory section of a book,

speech, report and whatnot.

As for this assignment, students must come up with a video clip that contains 5 hidden

psychology concepts in it. The video clip must be worth 3 to 5 minutes long. This should be done

in a group of 5 to 6 members, and students are allowed to choose any concepts out of all the

chapters that was taught in class, as long as it floats their boat.

There are 3 requirements for this final assignment. First, each group needs to come up

with a video clip that includes 5 different psychology concepts. Second, each group needs to

make a report based on the video clip made. Last but not least, each group needs to present a

powerpoint slide presentation to the lecturer and their understanding on the video clip they just

filmed. This assignment is assigned for the purpose of allowing students to be able to engage in

psychological inquiry and become selfregulated learners.

Method

1) Apparatus and materials used

To ensure that the filming process of our video clip will run smoothly and according to plan with

no shakiness involved, we included a few things to abide what ever possible bad causes.

● Cameras (A Canon EOS 700D)

Using a DSLR is much better than using a phone as it produces lownoise images and

videos that are large in sizes. This can ensure that the video will not be in a low quality

format, and the object in the frame will be focused much better as compared to a phone.

● Tripod (by Velbon)

Using a tripod will help to avoid shakiness and it will help stabilize the video directly,

without even needing the help of a video editing software.

● iMovie (by Apple)

iMovie is a video editing software to edit videos as well as songs. One thing good about

iMovie is that it is easy to work the software and it most definitely is not

timeconsuming.

2) Procedures

Milieu

The filming took place at block D, level 2 in Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus. This area

was not filled with people therefore the possibility of getting distracted or feeling shy to film in

public is less. Plus, the area is bright with sunlight and it was strategic for filming purposes.

Timing

We started filming from 2:30p.m.until 4p.m. in the afternoon. We wanted to film it earlier but

because of conflicting schedules of all the group members, that is the only time we were to film

the video clip together. Also, we did not want to film early morning of during the night because

we needed natural sunlight as light source in the evening or morning would not be as sufficient

compared to the afternoon sun for filming purposes.

Operation

I. Discussion

We communicated via a very popular social application called ‘WhatsApp’. Ideas were

discussed in a group chat that we created as meeting up physically was hard. This is because

some of us have different assignments to wrap up because of the different subjects we were

taking. We brainstormed and came up with a storyline that is inspired by a common Twitter

slang used, called ‘Plot Twist’. It often means a sudden change in events, and most of the time

ends up being ironic. Hence, our title was named ‘Plot Twist. We chose the concepts we wanted

to use first in the clip before actually coming up with a storyline to ease the work.

II. Role delegation

When in a group, equality is important when it comes to distributing the roles. Every member is

best to contribute his or her effort as much as the other members to be fair, and that is what we

basically did. Thus, we discussed and settled the roles for everyone based on their forte to ensure

efficiency while completing this assignment. The table attached below is our task delegation

system.

III. Video filming

As mentioned earlier, we filmed at Taylor’s University Lakeside Campus at Block D’s 2nd floor.

Since there was not many people around that area we chose, it was easy for filming and was not

really time consuming as the possibility of being shy is low. Job was made easier for all of us.

Each scene that we filmed went smoothly with no pauses as we all knew what to do. Everyone

was also very participative as all of us portrayed our character perfectly. Our video may not be

an Oscarwinning one, but it sure is not too shabby.

Not only that, filming angles were taken

seriously. In filmography, one of the main film

rules is the 180 degree rule. One should not

exceed 180 degree if they are filming the same

scene but with different angles as it may confuse

viewers.

IV. Analysis, tabulation and presentation

The video clip that we did must actually be supported by a report as well as a powerpoint slide

presentation, as it is part of the requirements based on our project brief given by our lecturer.

Appropriate analysis, research as well as tabulation of data was done to make sure we were all on

the right track from achieving our desired grade, which is an A. Although roles were distributed

equally from the start, but those who finished their tasks before hand helped the ones that were

still in the process of finishing theirs. This is to quicken the process of wrapping up what needed

to be done before the submission date. Also, crosschecking the work of others was done to

double check typos as well as grammar errors because nothing is ever perfect without several

checks.

As for our presentation, we went with a minimalistic theme for our slides’ layout. This is for

easy reading purposes as we did not want to make the slides complicated and wordy. We also

rehearsed several times to make sure we somewhat knew what to say on presentation day since

presentation skill is also part of the medium where we achieve our marks.

All in all, we are very happy that everything went smoothly and according to plan. No frustration

was triggered in the midst of fulfilling the requirements of this assignment, as we all clicked well

with each other.

Story Synopsis  “Plot Twist”

The story is about a protagonist,

named Claudia. The story begins with her

having a study session with her best friend,

Nabila. But all of a sudden, she had a

tantrum.

Claudia started complaining about her single life. She was mad how she has not gotten herself a

boyfriend for 19 years, and started ranting nonstop like someone who has a hormonal disorder.

Claudia started crying and sobbing but thanks to Nabila, she managed to comfort her. When

Claudia stopped tearing up, she saw a really goodlooking guy who was wearing a collared shirt

and glasses from a distance at another table reading a book. He had all the traits she wanted in a

guy. She wanted to walk up to him to say “Hi!” but got scared right after she thought she had the

courage to do so. In the end, Nabila told her to just go ahead and brave up or not she will be

forever alone. (Not to confuse with the 9gag meme.)

She listened to Nabila and followed wherever the goodlooking guy went. It led her to the

nearest vending machine, because that was where he went and got himself a drink. She hid

behind the vending machine to avoid getting caught. She wanted to talk to him but she got too

10

distracted from looking at him in awe from the back of the vending machine. When he left, she

trailed him from the back to not let him

be out of her sight.

As she was approaching the direction

where he was walking to, she got

shocked and shrieked! She saw him

giving that drink he bought from the vending machine to a guy, and what is worse is that he was

putting his arms around the other guy’s waist. At that moment, she knew she did not have the

chance as that scene is selfexplanatory  the goodlooking guy was gay.

What she just witnessed weakened her

legs and she fell to the ground because

she just could not believe what she just

saw. Nabila, who was just sitting not

far away from where she fell came to

the rescue. Nabila ran towards Claudia

to check if she was alright, and continued to comfort her because at that moment, she was

emotionally unstable.

They both went back to their seats as Nabila tries to calm Claudia down. Her mood slowly

lightened up when she agreed with Nabila that there are still a lot of fishes in the sea. As they

11

were laughing hysterically, a friend of theirs in a mintcoloured tee came and reminded them that

they were going to be late for class if they do not make a move. They quickly jumped out of their

seats, packed their books and went off.

Concepts

1. Social Interaction

Scene description: Initially, Claudia(left) and Nabila(right) were having a study session. Out of

nowhere, Claudia slams her book and closes it, and had a tantrum. She started complaining to

Nabila about how she was unhappy for being single for 19 years. Nabila then comforts her and

gave her advices so that she could calm down.

Concept definition: A process of reciprocal stimulation or response between two or more people.

It develops competition, interaction, influences social roles and status and people for social

relationships.

13

Application: As Claudia was having a tantrum whilst complaining, Nabila gave her a number of

advices to ensure her to calm down. The conversation made between Claudia and Nabila is

where the concept, ‘Social Interaction’ takes place. They each responds after each other hence

develops an interaction for social relationships.

2. Stereotype

Scene description: When Claudia got up from crying on the table, she saw a good looking guy

sitting just across her on another table. She was stunned and happened to be starstrucked at the

same time. Also, she could not help but notice the book he was holding in his hands.

Concept definition: A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type

of person or thing.

14

Application: When Claudia was done crying, she saw a good looking guy sitting just across her

on another table and got starstrucked for a moment. In an instant, she thought he was studious

because the first thing she saw him doing was reading. Hence, it created an instant stereotype in

her mind that he does a lot of reading, at least that is what she thinks.

3. First Impression

Scene description: Claudia got starstrucked when she wiped her tears because she noticed a good

looking guy sitting nosofar away from where she was sitting. She instantaneously thought that

he was handsome due to the fact that his outfit and his traits fits the requirements of her ideal

future boyfriend.

Concept definition: Initial judgement towards another person when we meet them for the first

time.

15

Application: The second Claudia laid her eyes on the guy sitting across her, she thought that he

was really handsome. That was her first impression, which synonymously meant that he was

attractive from her point of view. The impression occurs based on what she observed, like the

collared shirt the guy was wearing and also his glasses.

4. FearBased Appeal

Scene description: Nabila encourages Claudia to walk up to the good looking guy so that there

will be a high possibility of them becoming friends. Claudia attempted to walk up to him but ran

back to her seat next to Nabila and told her she could not do it as she was too afraid. Nabila then

gave more word of advice and persuasion to Claudia for her to brave up and talk to him. The

persuasion then worked, which resulted hers trailing him from the back.

Concept definition: A persuasive message that attempts to arouse fear in order to divert behavior

16

through the threat of impending danger or harm.

Application: After Claudia had a glance of the good looking guy, Nabila told her to go over to

him but Claudia was afraid. Hence, Nabila told her that if she don’t go over him, she might be

forever alone with no boyfriend in the end. Finally, Claudia was persuaded by Nabila and she

attempted to walk up to him. Claudia was afraid of being alone forever hence she was

successfully persuaded by Nabila. This resulted the presence of the concept  fearbased appeal.

5. Public Display of Affection

Scene description: The good looking guy gave his partner a bottle of water whilst touching his

waist. They both sat on a table, facing each other. His partner who was initially on his phone,

managed to put it down and look into the good looking guy’s eyes. As they started a

conversation, they slowly held hands and showed their affection towards each other.

17

Concept definition: An act of showing one’s love or affection towards their significant other in a

public area.

Application: As the good looking guy and his partner were conversing, they slowly held hands.

This was done in a public area. Hence, there was the presence of public display of affection since

they both did not care if anyone else was looking at them pouring their love for each other in an

open space.

18

Conclusion

All in all, this assignment most definitely helped all of us understand the concepts and

theories better. We now have a more indepth understanding of the theories we chose as well as

the theories that we did not include in our video clip.

We would also like to express our gratitude to our lecturer, Mr. Shankar for helping us

throughout this whole semester. We thank him so much for allowing us to be his students and we

are undoubtedly grateful to be under his wings for this subject.

Last but not least, we would like to take a moment to appreciate each other’s presence

throughout this whole preparation to complete our assignment. This is because we all believe

that Rome was not built in a day and it takes time to complete something. The more man power

and helping hands, the faster the task gets completed. In the words of Helen Keller, “Alone we

can do so little. Together we can do so much.”
