What is Social Mobility?
O It is the upward or downward movement of individuals, families, or other categories of people within or between layers of social stratification.
O It is a change in social status relative to others' social location within a given society.
OMobility is most often quantitatively measured in terms of change in economic status of a person.
What are its types?
O Intragenerational – within the same generationO ex: Rags to
Riches stories
O Intergenerational – between one or more generationsO ex:
grandchildren are “richer” than their grandparents
How to move from one class to another?
A. Through one’s effortsO By obtaining an education
O By maximizing a talent
O By being resourceful and hardworking

Effects of Social Stratification in Learning
What is Social Stratification?
OIt refers to the process whereby people are systematically ranked based on their access to valued resources.
OIt depends on social and economic classes comprising three main layers: upper class, middle class and lower class.

What are its effects on learning?
O Children belonging to a poor or disadvantaged family does not aspire much for higher education.
O Children coming from lower class families have very little exposure to the influence of mass media such as books, magazines and other learning materials.
O The educational attainment of the child matches the socio-economic status of his family.
