cannot help but notice the term 'social
media' being used almost everywhere.
However did you know that often times,
at least eight times out of ten, the word
social media is and out of context. This
is because people are not aware that the
terms social media and social marketing
have two different meanings.
Difference between Social Media and
Social Marketing
Let's start by looking at Social
marketing. As it’s name suggests, social
marketing is mainly about bringing about
a 'social' change by means of marketing.
In other words, it is about making
changes throughout society in general.
For instance, have you ever seen
billboards or television commercials
promoting messages such as 'Quit
Smoking' or 'Use a Condom (to help
control the spreading of
H.I.V/A.I.D.S)'? Well those are
classic examples of social marketing
being used. So, social marketing does
not necessarily promote a specific brand
or company but rather it promotes a
cause for the betterment of the society
by using marketing methods such as
television and radio commercials etc.
Social media on the other hand is a more
contemporary term which means simply
the use of media in a social setting.
Blogs such as Lace and Zippers,
Probable Impossible and
www.WarrenRoyGordon.com are
perfect examples of that. Other forms of
social media include; message boards,
podcasts, vlogs (video blogs you can
view online) or RSS feeds. Social
Media enables marketers to use these
outlets to communicate with their target
audience in different ways that initiate
"socializing".
A few years ago marketers would have
to rely heavily on search engines such as
Bing and Google in order to drive
traffic to their websites. However, it isn't

uncommon for marketers to place
themselves in front of their target
audience through the creation of blogs
or by participating in micro blogging sites
such as Twitter. This completely
revolutionized the way marketing is
viewed especially because the utilization
of social media gives marketers both
more opportunity and more control.
With that said, take an honest look at
your social media efforts right now. Are
you using this new media at all? Examine
HOW you are using it. Are you
creating or enriching content through
blogging or other social mediums or are
you regurgitating information just to do
it? Which one will make you a leader in
your industry?
