Why library uses social media

BENEFITS

To complement messages we are delivering through other channels

To reach certain audiences with specific messages

To promote our resources

To enhance relations with existing audience

BUT

While 95% of college students use Facebook, 37% of Irish people are not on ANY social network

It takes time to get it right

We need to be flexible to move on to ‘the next thing’ e.g. Vine or Google+

The ‘squeaky wheel’

Getting started on a social network Listen first

Look for yourself, someone you know, your organisation, street, hometown, an event

Then jump in

What you might be thinking

Facebook is just a fad?http://mattmoorewrites.wordpress.com/2012/09/27/social-media-will-change-in-2013/

Students don’t want us (parents, teachers, the library) in their social network

We will eventually have to pay for this
