What is Twitter?

• Twitter is a social media site in which to convey a message, thought, fact, idea, or picture about any and everything you deem newsworthy.

• Twitter allows you to tweet (compose messages), retweet (forward) another tweet (post), and reply to a tweet (conversation).

• Twitter allows putting a link in the tweet. It’s converted to 20 characters, which saves space.

• Twitter limits each post to 140 characters.

Twitter Vocabulary• @ (at sign): a symbol used to send a direct path to a

Twitter handle

• # (hashtag): a symbol used in front of a word to make it more searchable; similar to a Google search

• DM: direct message to another tweeter through a private channel; private messaging

• Favorite: similar to hitting ‘Like’ on Facebook or putting your stamp of approval that you

‘like’ a tweet

• Follow: the tweets from businesses, people, or entities you want to read

Twitter Vocabulary• Reply: commenting on a tweet; conversation starter

• Retweet: forwarding another person or entity’s post; similar to forwarding an e-mail

• RT: acronym for retweet

• Tweet: posting a message

• Tweeter: a person who posts tweets

• Twitter Handle: your username

• Unfollow: the tweets from businesses, people, or entities you no longer want to read or follow

• Employee thought he was tweeting on his own account– “Obamas gma even knew it was going 2 b bad! 'She died 3

days b4 he became president.“

– Fort Lauderdale Police Department – 2012• Employee (police officer) ranted about his job and the citizens

– “Deal with your own f--king kids.”– “The car was shaking so much I thought it would flip.”– [Of his supervisor] “racist f—k”

– Chrysler Corporation – 2012• Consultant mistook his account with his clients

– “I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the #motorcity and yet no one here knows how to f--king drive.”

• What are employees saying?– BBC created “a written policy for acceptable social media use”

that their employees MUST follow• Avoid interfering with BBC work• Employees were tweeting about the internal problems

– Cisco hired a new employee in 2009• "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty

paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work.”• A person saw this and ultimately the job offer was rescinded

– Wait staff at Beverly Hills Barneys Greengrass• “Jane Adams, start of HBO series “Hung” skipped out

on a $13.44 check. Her agent called and payed the following day. NO TIP!!!”

• @lauriemathers a month later she brought in $3 tip. Made big deal about $3. Bitterly said she read about it on Twitter. 2 weeks later no job.
