Social Media The Big Picture: By Ahron Katz Social Media - is effectively platforms where people can create a network of friends and share content they enjoy within that network of friends that can be shared across multiple networks. Social Media has prompted an over consumption of content. The reason behind this over consumption is people are getting content that they are interested in. Social Networks Networks of connected people on a Social Platform. There are all sorts of connections. Anytime you are interconnected with someone they will fall into your social network. Social Platforms (ie Facbook Twitter etc) Track usage habits of the users in aims of providing them better content. The platforms leverage the data to connect good advertising to end users. They are all working towards making their network the best place to buy advertising. Viral = news worthy content being passed across multiple social networks and or specific network. Brands and Companies Have two primary ways of marketing on social media. 1) Provide newsworthy content for your advocates to share. 2) Pay for highly targeted ads. Challenge/ Opportunity for brands: to engage with their customers and advocates by sharing their personality and newsworthy content while paying attention and caring about their customers personality and newsworthy content. Facebook - Facebook was built to connect the world. Their primary product is the news feed. The news feed gives people a personalized newspaper. They do this by learning about the users and feeding them content that match their own or their friend’s interests. The algorithms keep getting better with the data Facebook is collecting. Twitter - Was built to create a live engagement over news. Twitter users follow people who they think have a news worthy opinion and interact with them about events using hashtags. Occasionally one can create a newsworthy tweet that can be retweeted to go viral across multiple networks. Instagram A way to connect friends with pictures and captions. Whatsapp - a messaging platform that helps facilitate news and interaction within families and groups. Pinterest A platform that allows you to connect with people through pictures and hobbies. LinkedIn - The professionals Facebook. Personalized business news feeds from within your network of professionals. Facebook is opening a business product to compete with LI. Snapchat - Created to make internet engagement more natural (kind of like talk) a comment will be delivered and after it’s viewed it will forever be erased in 6 seconds. (The anti -data) Yelp - etc - Information aggregation on businesses and a platform where customers can interact about their opinion of the business. Flipboard - Personalized news feed trying to integrate social media, world news, business news and other news feeds together into one master newsfeed. In my opinion this is Facebook’s main competitor. Blogs - A single and or grouping of journalists creating their own news worthy site. There are many smaller networks that allow for the same functionality. Think of these like joining a specific networking group or association.
