Controversies in Sports via Social Media
Knicks forward Amare Stoudemire was fined $50,000 by
the NBA in June after directing a gay slur at a fan in a
direct message via Twitter
Golfer Luke Donald issued an apology after he posted a
tweet calling a golf course architect an expletive. Donald
intended these to be direct messages, instead they went
out to Donald’s 300,000 followers (incl his phone #)
A couple of athletes were kicked off their Olympic teams
due to racially charged Tweets

and reminds everyone that celebrities can read what you

Assessment: Group Activity
In small groups of 3-4, each group will choose a way of
promoting a sport, athlete, celebrity, or entertainment
event using social media. Possible examples (but not
limited to) include:
Create a video for a game show asking viewers to vote using
their cell phones (texting)
Create a blog following the Montreal Canadiens hockey season
Create a Facebook page for a celebrity
Set up a Twitter feed for a sports writer
Group Activity
Each group will present to the class:
Their social media community
The community must be completed, with examples, photos, lists,
information, etc
Why they chose this forum
Advantages and disadvantages of this social media forum for
their subject/event. Would they do this again or would they
choose a different social media forum?
